[edit] I’ll guess that CodeRed will have to fix this on old consoles  by fiddling with the LOD cutoff points and try to balance popping with game play.

On PCs the M$ SDK should handle all the mechanics of the lack of certain facilities in say going from Dx12 to Dx9.  However, as you say this is all about coding for obsolete kit. The real problem appears to be with older consoles rather than older PCs. It seems it isn’t just optimisation, but possibly a need for eliminating background detail as well.

From the comments section of the blog it seems that older consoles just do not have the grunt (speed and memory) to handle everything that is happening – hence the culling and object placement problem that resulted in an avatar apparently standing up and showing its butt in a speeding car.

The link ignores the Directx SDK, and focusses on the way the game is coded, and how CodeRed have used their game engine to work with the lower level GPU ‘handles’.

As a simple example when a scene is rendered, how are the coordinates of any object used to set up the depth culling that is then used to render the scene. Depth culling simply means that if an object obscures one that is further away in the scene then the far object (or parts) will not be shown. (There are a number of different techniques that can be used to handle this, each with pluses and minuses). Real time  Rendering mechanics are nearly always a set of trade-offs and the article both hints at these and makes guesses on how they have been applied.

Hacker News linked to an extremely interesting blog article on how a scene is rendered in Cyberpunk. Although I’m familiar with most of the tech referenced in the blog, it revealed to me that I was ignorant with respect to the pains-taking work by a team of artists who spend hours tagging all the objects and surfaces. For example, tagging objects  that can move in a scene for special treatment. All that in addition to special lighting set-ups for many scenes (shadow casting lights etc.).

Regardless of any views you may have on a game, it is a worthwhile read that gives insights on its rendering mechanics.

Knowing your interest in aircraft, and your desire to learn Blender you may be interested in this link. (Polish versions of the e-book are free). The book is split into 4 parts, a General (Linux FOSS Apps) Book, a Modelling (Blender) book, A Texturing Book, and A Rendering Book. As a very cursory overview the books detail the process of acquiring and editing technical drawings of an object, then the translation of this into a model accompanied by all the pretty bits. Ignoring the subject the process should be similar for turning building plans into building models.

You can freely download the four parts as a single (Polish) e-book here to browse and see if it is of value to you before buying the individual English sections.

You really would think that Boeing would spend more money, time and effort on safety, but they really have not learned their lesson.

I think I’ll put Ryanair on my personal blacklist!

Then there was the poltergeist that moved files to different folders…

That one has definitely moved into our house and inhabited my wife’s machine! Over the years, I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut and just fix the problem rather than get into an argument over ‘you MUST have done this/that’ etc. Now I’ll know that I should just blame ‘the ghost in the machine’.

Unfortunately Wheels, Lee asked about Linux. The Linux sound system is pretty carp. A Pulseaudio that sometimes works but most times can be a pita to set up, and a working Alsa system that is deprecated and getting obsolete.  If you read the link I gave about getting spdif to work with Kodi you can get a flavour of the problems.

It gets worse. A public Github repo leaked the unencrypted FTP credentials of Solarwind for the last 2+ years. What could possibly go wrong!

Never tried spdif, but I would guess that the Zorin instructions cover different devices or a pass-through situation.

Although I similarly guess you could make a transparent light emitter it is an unlikely device, so two way on one spdif connector is also unlikely.

Normally you select the connectors in sound setup. Certainly that is where the spdif option appears on Windows. Ubuntu Linux is a bit Carp for sound and does not seem to have any options.  You could try this link.

I just read this Beeb report on BAME reluctance to accept a Covid vaccination due to online media reports. Unfortunately I can say that this is very likely all too  true.

My window cleaner was sent a video purporting to have come from a reputable Belgium scientist who appeared to be in his mid 50s, in which the supposed scientist in the video seriously stated that all the vaccines had nano particles in them that reacted with 5G signals and immediately resulted in horrible cancers. I laughed and said that he had been fooled and that he was the recipient of malign crap deliberately sent to harm him. He objected and said the man in the video was a reputable scientist and he had checked out his name. I told him (slight stretch) that I was a scientist and it was all a viscous hoax with not even a bit of truth in it.

I can only think that some people are deliberately targetting BAMEs in a malign attempt at an ethnic purge via Covid.

Well Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released, however I think I’ll wait until I have upgraded my PC! According to a CodeRed Press release it plays really well on top of the range PCs and consoles, but it plays like a dog on older XBoxes and Playstations . Big updates to the console code to address this problem  are planned for January and February so a wait may be wise. B-)

It depends on the recipient’s AV security levels, most will barf at self signed security packages that are on a different machine. These are normally only used on the developing machine or within the developer’s domain.

It used to be possible to create a self-signed certificate for test purposes using something like Method 2 in the following link. I’ve not had cause to use this for years (too much playing with coding on a Raspberry Pi), so I’m not sure if it still works.

XAML does NOT require you to use C#, but as it is geared towards app production it does require managed code to use a bindable XAML when compiling the exe. Search on XAML and C++ if you ever want to use it.

Very nice, if you like fiddling with supported M$ graphics try WPF 3D. Although it will do animation quite nicely it is not a game engine, but rather a system for including graphics within a program e.g. 3D representations of data etc. There is a tutorial with examples here.

Personally I used to prefer to use shaders while playing with graphics – but this has become quite a specialist area now that nVidia and the like have got loose on it and the Unified Shader Model has left me a long way behind and back in the days of OpenGL shaders.  Hell, even the kids are now writing better Minecraft Shaders than me!

It looks as though the ‘Spanish’ Covid (Covid-19G) that the teens&twenties brought back from their Spanish holidays is not only more infectious it also appears that it can reinfect those who had the earlier variety of Covid.

Lots of pretty charts showing the evolution of the virus are given here.

+1 to vitamin D, but you need more than the minimum during the dark days of winter.

The other vitamin supplement that appears to be good for the heart is vitamin K-MK7. As it happens it is also excellent for the bones, and definitely should be looked at for females taking calcium supplements or suffering bone loss. link.

If you do take it it should be taken with something fatty, e.g. milk or yoghurt as it is a fat soluble vitamin. (unfortunately it is quite expensive, the only natural sources tend to be in fermented Japanese foods such as natto, kimchi etc, or grass-fed dairy products. (Channel Islands/ Holland have MUCH lower rates of heart disease than UK corn-fed dairy, but similar diets!)

As usual, do your own research and talk to your specialist/doctor.
