Sorry for all the edits on the previous post – they were done for clarity and to correct a memory lapse! (I got carried away in that I originally talked about chopping the cable and running standard A/C cable between the ends, something I used on a different camera). Ignore the aside about only using one end of the Foscam cable – that was for yet another set-up!

Bottom line for others do not waste your money on ridiculously expensive DC cable, there are easy ways around the problem – A/C cable and weatherproof chocolate boxes solve a lot of problems.

I have a Foscam camera situated about 20 metres from the ideal power point and router. As this particular camera is just a 12v setup I chopped the supplied Foscam cable in two (making the end fixtures is hard!), and ran good quality weatherproof ethernet (I only used one end) using a weatherproof ‘chocolate box’ on the weather end piece to hold all the connections and a POE connection terminal). My Foscam does not have native POE so I purchased one of these from Amazon and it works brilliantly in providing both power and Ethernet over one simple bit of cable. The Foscam 12v transformer itself was put into my project spares box as the POE supplied the 12v (options for 5 & 9 too, so be careful selecting the correct voltage)

NOTE this gives a non-standard POE so should only be used with kit that has no POE of itself.

As all the external runs are low volt DC no electrician sign-off is required. The A/C & ethernet internal bit is literally plug & play so again needs no sign-off.

Deleting the restore partition makes things much harder if all goes belly up. On the subject of systems going belly up, look up how to activate system restore – it has saved my bacon a number of times when something (normally a Windows update) has corrupted a registry.

For some reason this facility is difficult to access and normally turned off by M$ – the main reason I think being it allows a measure of facility to undo M$ updates. However, certain updates (the carp Anniversary update for example) zap this facility and your restore points. As a result you need to diary to take a look at it from time to time to ensure it is still functioning AOK.

If you are using Linux I think Malc(?) is a user of Zoneminder and may have some pointers. For Windows I use BlueIris.  Both really only come into their own with multiple or Pan/Tilt//Zoom cameras. The Foscam software is otherwise quite adequate if a bit funky to use.

My neighbours actually encouraged me to put up a camera as they thought it would give them some protection. In fact it just encouraged the tealeaves to hit them rather than me! The police like them and ask if I have video of the street they could use, but I have my cameras set up only to record when someone crosses MY boundaries.

I should probably have linked to the Elephone site, as you can probably get it cheaper by going direct, but I now tend to use Amazon on overseas purchases to avoid the ‘non-protection’ afforded by PayPal. (costs you more to ship back trivial package items from a ‘missing’ shipment than is worth it.)

I know nothing about the chiphone CUBOT, however I do know about the chiphone ELEPHONE. It has been extremely reliable and afaik without spyware (ex Google’s stuff. In use it has matched or outmatched my wife’s Moto G3 in all quarters. I have also been able to get replacement batteries two years after purchasing it. Although a Chiphone the oem is based in HongKong and seems focused on the Western market – support forums etc.

My phone is a bit old so I will not link to that. This, I think is their latest but not most expensive 5.5 inch. Amazon Link

You may want to consider adding an Air Source Heat Pump. This makes a natural addition to a house already set-up with all the ducting. It will not ‘replace’ your existing (or any new) heating system, but it will supplement and reduce your bills. It also adds value to your house in adding a point or two to its energy rating.

This obviously works best if you have a south facing wall that gets warmed by the sun.

A ‘Birkenhead Kiss’ is just like a Glasgow one only given with feeling!

When I was talking about the blues and reds it isn’t just Manchester ‘Blues’. MU fans were totally gutted when Chelsea blues ripped them apart 4-0. It wasn’t safe to talk to MU fans in the pub that night especially as the City blues won!

Beware —  afaik you cannot use an hdmi modulator with Sqy Q (no port). There IS a blanked off port,, with warnings not to remove the blanking plate, but no info on what it does. You probably do not need it as you do get a mini-box for one TV and streaming to a pad or two.

Still, I have to get me a vintage TV before anything

Tbh I do not understand that statement. Unless you have a very new TV, most support rf in (i.e. terrestrial TV broadcasts) . You may have to ‘tune’ in to any stream you pipe to it but the stream is found normally somewhere between channels 35 and 42.

Dogs can have a range of problems in later life if they are not ‘done’

Good job they don’t apply that prophylaxis to humans!

more to the point are you both ready so say hello to strangers

Agreed – but please make sure you suss out which footie clan they belong to before making ANY comments on that subject. If you are not careful you could wind up with a “Birkenhead Kiss” —  they take their footie clans far more seriously than in the south, especially any matches between the reds and blues.

Scart of itself should not be a problem. There are plenty of cheap scart adapters on the market.

Lee if your new adapter fails to work, I have a spare digital->rf coax adapter that I used to use to pump the signal from a HD+ Sky box around the house. PM me if you want it. I no longer need it as I moved over to Sky Q.

It does John, but you have to use the Advanced Tab and if necessary change accounts and rerun CCleaner for each account. This link walks you gently through all the steps. The link also explains the main difference with the paid-up version (it only cleans the system and logged on user files, which to me is a good safety measure).

I recommend using CCleaner as it is very safe (provided you use it to do a registry backup first). The issue with manual cleanups is that you are treading in areas where the dragons live, and it is pretty easy to stuff up your system especially if you mess with the registry.

!92.168.x.x is just a generic private network address – probably millions of people with the same one. Nothing to worry about if that is all it leaks. Your broadband network address is of course a different kettle of phish.

When you think Taliban, do not think in ‘artificial’ country terms, think instead in tribal terms that cross borders, The Pashtun tribe crosses Pakistan and Afghanistan and Iran. Thanks to the stupidity of the CIA, they made a deal with the devil (the Taliban+Pakistan Intelligence Agencies+Pakistan Military) in orderto fight the Russians. We were also involved in terms of SAS etc involvement. Bin Ladin hid out with the Pashtun which is akin to hiding out in both countries. It was politically unacceptable to make war on Pakistan so Afghanistan became the fall-guy.

Unfortunately both the US and UK Foreign Offices are unable to think/work at the tribal level which is why the Middle East is such a mess, and a situation not helped by the CIA’s proclivity to act as a rogue state in its own right. Most of the problems of the 20th/21st century in the Balkans/Middle East and Africa have been due to ill-advised CIA meddling.
