      Just a couple of observations:

      a) There is no proof that Sarin was used, just an observation from Turkey (a hardly dispassionate observer) that it appeared that Sarin had been used. I’m not denying poison gas was used and civilians died but chlorine is just as likely and ISIS have been known to use this, and could very likely have had this stockpiled in a facility that was bombed/shelled. (some dispute whether bombing or shelling took place). The  TV pictures of affected children exhibited the classic pink faces of chlorine poisoning. The health impacts of sarin are immediate but the interviewed parents said that their children seemed OK then died later.

      b) Tactically gas/nerve agents are effective when there is a simultaneous ground assault. This did not happen.

      c) Much more importantly, strategically WHO GAINS by using or releasing poisonous gases? Syria/Russia have nothing to win by their use. They were well on their way to resolving this conflict. On the other hand ISIS/Sunni extremists gain air support from the US. The US gains from curtailing Russia and supporting those it foolishly thinks it can trust, hence the CIA could well have assisted in ‘evidence’ planting. (Small quantities of Sarin can be made in a backstreet laboratory as evidenced by the Aum Shinrikyo sarin attack on the Tokyo. subway.)

      d) The CIA have a long history of manipulating the actions of their own Government (sometimes in illegal ways).

Neither of the war-mongering pair of Presidential candidates would have been my ideal choice. I just saw Trump as being less likely to drag us into a European war with Russia. However it looks like he has allowed the CIA to dictate public opinion on Syria by manufacturing a casus belli and who knows where that can lead.

I now fear an irrational Kim rather than Trump, but both are unlikely to back down from their public statements. I’m just glad I do not live in Guam as that must be very high on the list of N.Korean targets.

Mk II suggestion – see if there is a laser cutting company in your area who would make the parts, and what they would require from you to do it on the cheap. Then it would only become an assembly problem.

Google on “laser cutting services (your area)”

Living is only a small bit of the equation Spedders. We also need easy ways of fixing the bits that no longer work very well, otherwise living would be long-term torture rather than fun.

True Richard – it is also true that most (all?) medicines are poisonous. I was just injecting an element of caution.

Milligram levels of trace elements are often very good for you. Magnesium is a good example, 500mg (tenth of a teaspoon) of Epsom Salts daily will probably cut the risk of heart attacks – 10 grams would give you horrible ‘trots’!

It is worth doing a little research on what is being ingested as ‘Boron’!

Borax (sodium borate decahydrate) is the stuff your mother may have used around the house to boost the action of her detergent (normally soap & water). It works by turning warm/hot water into peroxide bleach. Borax is poisonous to humans (more so to some animals). The estimated lethal dose (ingested) for adults is 15-20 grams; less than 5 grams can kill a child or pet. Signs of poisoning include chronic coughs, watery eyes etc.

Bottom line DO NOT OVERDOSE (15 grms is about 3 teaspoons)

Dave’s advice is good but a bit costly for most folk, and Cloud backups may be a bit too complicated — obviously depends on the person. However if it is SOHO stuff then they should invest in something like Dave’s solution.

It does not take much to make a clean install, and personal files rarely total >32Gb so I would just advise them to do regular backup copies of all their Docs folder onto a few 32Gb USB sticks (Grandfather, father etc copies) . Put them somewhere safe, and make it a weekly habit. If they have a lot of Music copy that off onto another stick and just update it once/month.

Careful which hotel you use in Munich! I used one which was obviously being used by CIA types on their way home from the Middle East. The damned hotel was very nice, but had bedbugs and I came up with a very bad allergic reaction — ugh. The local Artz (referred via a pharmacy, which is the best way to see a Doctor in Germany) demanded to know the name of the hotel (Kings Hotel near Hbf Munich) and said in a typical German manner – Vey should NOT haff them! Take this letter to the Hotel manager and demand a refund!

I afterwards read that bedbugs have reached almost epidemic proportions in some of the best hotels in the US. So if you see or hear a Yank change hotel!

In Korea its the Chaebol thing – neopotism runs rife in Korean cultures. The original owner will buy up another business (say an airline) then give it to his brother to manage, and so on. The problem is of course that neopotism+deference sometimes brings business disasters.

In Japan, like Korea dereference like Korea is a strong cultural ethos. Japan does however have a different business model, not one I’m too familiar with but it is based on a hierarchy, I did however work with a number of Japanese and Japanese teams on major construction projects, and while hierarchies are good for building consensus their weak point is deference to someone perceived as stronger/wiser etc. This deference is a major problem when the ‘wise one’ ain’t so wise!

I would be shocked if failure of a subsidiary brought down the whole structure. However it would not surprise me for the troubled construction arm to be severed away from the overall Corporate structure and restructured. I don’t think only Westinghouse is in trouble, but no doubt we will hear more later today as I think US financial regulators are more scrupulous about revealing all contingent aspects.

Oh Dear! If ever proof was needed that Governments should be extremely cautious in exploiting (making?) zero days, the public (free) release by (Russian?) hackers of a huge cache of exploits makes the Internet far more dangerous for ordinary users. link.

Although the released exploits were relatively old (2013), it seems probable that the hackers still have a trove of more up to date stuff that they will try to sell.

Just as worrying is that the CIA has kept quiet (caused?) major vulnerabilities not only in Windows but also in Linux.

Ars has a review of the latest games patches for Ryzen. It looks to be a complicated business to tune a game for Ryzen in order to take best advantage of SMT (mult-threading).. Unfortunately on the business front the news is pretty dire for Ryzen, as soon as SMT is turned on Virtual machines suffer a Pink Screen of death. Running without SMT cripples Ryzen to an unusable extent. link I’m afraid I’ll have to read that AMD have fixed this before I have any interest in what otherwise looks a promising VM architecture.

An example where the user never gets an opportunity to set a password is given by this DVR exploit. (Luckily not one that seems to affect the UK). This one looks to be unfixable unless the DVR owner has registered their equipment.

If possible roll back the last update, and do it again. This is the sort of situation where I find System Restore invaluable but it is not a default setting in Win10.

The one thing that sells console hardware is a good stack of games, and I’m afraid it is far too late to offer xbox 360 compaibility as a big attraction, certainly not the half-baked compatibility to be found in Xbox-One. (Kinect games rarely if ever work)

M$ are going to have to offer serious money to the bigger games makers to get exclusives (even with the Win10 platform thrown in for free).

Richard, I honestly do not know.  I had understood that the statistics went with the crime location, not where the arrest was made. However, I would guess that they outsource the collation of the entry stats to a data entry type as many of the Police PCs look like they still run on Windows 2000, and I doubt that the software interfaces have been written to eliminate double data capture. In that situation transposition of locations is quite possible.

The crime stats should be those supplied by the Police. The problem is poor staff work where the person entering the details is lax in pin-pointing the exact location and it automatically gets dumped on the central location in the reporting district. Overall district crime is OK but street level may well go astray as a result.
