No probs – just stick it on a future ‘nice to have list’. It certainly is not a killer issue.

I like the message button. :good:

It would be perfect if the button was ‘blue’ for zero messages and red when there are any unread messages.

I used to dismantle HDDs for the interesting bits inside. High power mini magnets and a snazzy bird scarer (the platters) plus stepper motor(s) and springs. The old DVDs/CDs were also gutted – one day I’ll turn their laser disk burners into a cardboard cutter*. (I do not think there is enough power to do plywood). I’ve not yet had an SSD to gut, but I suspect that there will now be very few bits that I can reuse.

          • Don’t sneer at laser cut cardboard! Imagine a 3D model cut into layers then glued back together just using white glue. The result is actually very sturdy and easy to smooth off using something like papercrete. Above all it is probably the cheapest way of printing a useful large scale 3D object.

To be fair to the US they cannot wait the 2+ years before the UK is able to negotiate trade deals. The EU deal has been in the negotiating pipeline for a long time so I see the news of Trump’s ‘Betrayal’ as non-news, only an idiot or the Daily Wail Editor could think that the UK would get a US trade deal before the EU.

For some reason autism carries a bit of a stigma and families often go into denial and put off seeking help. Worse thing they can do, as early diagnosis opens up a battery of help that actually works very effectively (at least in one case).

I believe that the current medical view is that early diagnosis and intervention is by far the most cost effective way of dealing with the problems that could arise in later life. Parental coaching and counselling is an essential part of the UK treatment, and imo the most valuable bit. It is noticeable that instead of talking over and virtually ignoring the child, the child’s parents are now super careful to be far more inclusive and responsive. Although speech therapy and a spell of special needs education (social skills mainly) were valuable, I think the change in parental attitudes was both noticeable and responsible for much of the improvement. Drama classes also played a useful role for this particular child as I think the play-acting helped him understand a little better how people ‘tick’.

Eighteen months later, and now 5 years old the child no longer avoids eye-contact (almost a diagnostic symptom)  and has been taken off the ‘list’. He now not only has a large vocabulary and  talks nineteen to the dozen but more importantly has a large circle of school friends.

Based on your comments this would have been something that Spinrite would also have fixed. Essentially Spinrite reads much more slowly than the firmware, and re-reads if it gets errors. It then either does a write/re-write in the same place or uses the disks utilities to mark the sector as really bad and write the data elsewhere. However, it sounds like the WD tool has done the job.

Although the disk has been fixed the file structure could still be cocked-up. I’d recommend running the usual chkdsk and file utilities as things like cross-linked or duplicated links can cause the system to get confused and slower.

I’d also point out that a full off-line a/v Trojan check could be a good idea as disk slowdown is a symptom of this too.

Read errors can have a major impact on apparent disk speed. To find out what is causing a problem it may be possible to read the SMART data from a log. link

However, I’m not really sure what you can do with that info when you have it!

Once upon a time I would have recommended Spinrite, but that has priced itself outside the UK market. You could try MHDD but to be honest I think that could be a risky option that I would reserve for the day that I decided to put in a new drive!

I have some personal familial experience that suggests that rather than drugging the child the first steps should be speech therapy coupled with counselling for the parents on how to encourage the speech habit and encouraging more parent-child interaction. Success does however depend on where on the autistic spectrum the child’s problems can be placed. It certainly seems to work for those who are on the borderline.

Statistically there appears to be a direct correlation between high IQ (especially logic) and autism, and I just feel it wrong to drug someone because they are a bit behind in one area of their development. However autism does need to be diagnosed and acted on as apparently older children get extremely frustrated at their inability to communicate and it often impacts on the child’s social skills and may actually make the child anti-social..

There are of course numerous UK resources but I would not even know where Ukrainian/Russian help could be obtained.

The FT does not support your view Richard, and neither does the EU parliament, so some of us, like Jason, can still dream.

However lets leave that argument until the Election is over as it would need young voters to come out and exercise their democratic rights in the same proportions as the over 60s. An unlikely situation unless there is a paradigm shift or wealthy city backers decide to give the young a nudge, and the editor of the Daily Wail gets sacked. (The owner of the Daily Wail , Lord Rothermere remains fervently pro-European).

Now is fine, but there is very little to differentiate a ‘link’ from the normal body font.

If you and John use two step verification then I agree with your point Wasbit – probably a site problem.

I prefer the ‘black/grey’ for the font.

Like others, I find lighter blues on white (or worse yellows on white) to be very tiring to read.

Two way audio just uses programs similar to those you would find on a ‘Mint’ distribution (remember the Pi fully supports a secure VNC). Mobile phone connection to a pi, just use SSH to go into the pi, if you want a call-back from the pi on motion detection just use a push notification link, and/or combine it with Raspcam remote! (app link).

I would not pretend that this is a commercial option, but it is a very viable (relatively cheap) way of a home-user learning the underlying basics of a cctv security system.

I will vote Lib Dem as a protest. Imo this election is just pure political chicanery by May at the public’s expense. If enough young voters used their ballot and voted the same way it could actually change the face of British politics for the good. I just hope that someone stirs up the social media and points out to the young that they can have a bloodless revolution.

Actually Dave a Pi kit is 1080p and cheaper! I did not shop around – all are from Pimoroni)

                                        Pi Zero W £9.60

Pi Noir £29 (IR camera accessory)

Total £38.60 – assumes you have a spare old 8GB SD card, otherwise add that cost.

If you want full PT action then that adds a bit

Pan-Tilt mount £30 (out of stock at the moment)

The above are all plug and play (no soldering), pretty much the same as building a PC!  The only downside for some would be the requirement to pick up a bit of Linux experience.

I’ll admit zoom is much harder to handle and needs another servo and a lot of kludging to the zoom lens you are using. link

I do not think the mental efforts would stretch many Forumites too much, and where there are issues there are enough people with sufficient expertise to give adequate support.

That said, now that ip cameras are more or less a commodity product, privacy and security problems in the general population could well become a growing problem. The issues with their security already provide potential problems with peeping toms and celebrity stalkers.

Even Apple doesn’t give any greater resolution than Windows. In fact Windows had usable 4K before Apple.

But Aviglion and 7K video — wow, and why would you ever need that unless you wanted to positively identify someone over 200 metres away to criminal evidence standards? I see I should have used cars as a comparison as Aviglion is more like a Ferrari or Masarati compared with Hikvision’s Posrche!
