There are lots of terms I do not like, but topping the list is the over-hyped word ‘paradigm’. Nine times out of ten this can be simply replaced with ‘idea’ or ‘concept’.

I think that while your interpretation of the commands is OK at one level your simplification conceals a lot of ‘richness’. Appropriate use of jargon is a way of using just a few words to stand-in for a large amount of information or methodology and so it is with your apparently simple examples.

Parsing normally means the syntactic analysis of a statement or code and breaking it down into its elements for further processing (sometimes iteratively looping back to further breakdown). while you could I guess lump this under the general heading of processing, it means a bit more than that to me.

Equally, Enumerate means more than just list in a programming context. It is normally taken to mean ‘Enumerated TYPE (i.e. a list of key words that can be used in other contexts). Wikipedia has a good simple example:

“For example, the four suits in a deck of playing cards may be four enumerators named Club, Diamond, Heart, and Spade, belonging to an enumerated type named suit.”

I do however agree that jargon can be a ‘killer’ as the use of such short-hand means that you really have to know the ‘language’ at a detailed level before you can understand a ‘simple’ high level bit of jargon. Imo Linux is much worse at assuming knowledge of jargon, and I often find that looking up something then results in a whole series of lookups just to understand what I first found!

If you have wifi on your mobile afaik you could set it up to use the Internet without having any data allowance on your mobile. I have never checked this, but I see no reason why it should not work. Happy to be corrected by any other Forumite on this statement!

If you were brought up in the world before PCs and/or played strategy board games when you were a teenager then you may well like the free version of winspww2.  This is very similar in play to the old Avalon Hill board game Panzer Leader, but updated to the computer age. You play against the computer, but if you want to roll your own scenario with the game designer (you will have to search for this) you can set up computer vs computer games in your own terrain, and (im)balanced order of battle.

The nature of this turn-based game means it is not fast playing, but if you are an armchair corps commander/tactician then this could be your game to pass half an afternoon. Great for those whose reaction speed has slowed!

There are additional scenarios available on line, but I’m afraid you will have to search for them as I cannot remember their locations.

I’ve NEVER had a problem with Hotmail, so excuse me for being a bit dubious about pinning all the blame on Hotmail.  Browser hijacking is a common as mud, and one of the easiest ways of hijacking all your browsers is to modify the Hosts file.  If your A/V does not detect this happening you are stuffed as this can divert all attempts to log-on to go to la-la land.

You may want to consider setting your hosts file back to its default value. link. Btw as you will see from the link, Linux also has a Hosts file!

[edit] I should have added that the default Hosts file is very short and looks like this. Your Hosts file will be much larger as it builds to reflect your browsing:

                “Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
                #
                # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
                #
                # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
                # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
                # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
                # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
                # space.
                #
                # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
                # lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
                #
                # For example:
                #
                # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
                # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
                # localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
                # 127.0.0.1 localhost
                # ::1 localhost

Humour me John – try to sign in via MSN.

See if you get the same errors.

Second – WHERE did you go to get Hotmail help, was this a result of Googling for sign-in help? A number of the Google links are just commercial organisations completely unconnected with M$.

As Tippon says, that is one serious Koi pond, at £20-£50 per inch I can quite believe they rival the value of the Ferrari.

I am really bad in needing to edit nearly everything I do. Partly for spelling/grammar, but also for flow. However I find the <30 minutes edit window to be fine. If I feel I need to add something new or something I forgot to mention I will always use [edit]. ….

I do not think the way the forum is set up runs into the sort of problem you cite Steve. Once someone has responded to your post the edit window is closed and you cannot go back and retract/alter the original post to ‘fix the facts’.

[edit] Just checked there is no way an Edit can be used to delete a post. So that too has been covered Steve.

Most PoE kit does not really need gigabyte speeds. Excluding of course the humongous 7K resolution of the camera that Dave referenced in an earlier post!

PoE kit and equipment is an area where it pays to read the small print in the specs before purchasing as not all kit is compatible with the chosen injectors/spltters. In fact the latest PoE standard for gigabyte systems includes a start-up communication phase that could actually damage incompatible kit – say for example old passive PoE kit stuck on the end of a modern injector/splitter system..

Applies to humans too. The very latest procedures for Caesarian births is to wipe some of the mother’s vaginal fluids around the baby’s mouth to ensure a healthy quota of bacteria in the gut of the baby. Without this apparently the baby’s gut biome is very abnormal they link this aabnormality to all sorts of problems varying from allergies through to coeliac disease in later life. (uproven – see problem in cause versus correlation, but they figure it does no more harm than a natural birth and might do some good)

Wife had C-dif, twice (or once recurring last year) spending about 9 weeks between the two spells in hospital through autumn. I teased her the whole time that I’d happily donate some healthy stuff if the medicine didn’t work. She was adamant their was no way she was having a poo transplant. However the doctors did mention that it was a possibility. Not mine of course. But I did wonder where they get healthy human manure from.

I do not know about this country, but it is one source of income for medical students in the US. I guess you need to both have people you can trust as well as easy access to microbiology facilities.

[edit] Just an added comment, there was also some research showing that if the Mum had antibiotics it had drastic impacts on the baby’s microbiome.

Just to add to Richard’s note on metabolism, there is some research showing that the gut bacteria is different for individuals with autism. link. There is other research that shows that changes in gut bacteria can have long term impacts.

However carrying out research on humans is notoriously difficult and medical researchers always seem to ignore the first rule of statistics:

Correlation does NOT necessarily mean causation.

Bottom line (no pun intended) I would be more inclined (on the basis of safety) to favour a healthy  ‘poo transfusion’ than use of a fringe drug.

The edit button disappears if anyone else has posted to the thread after you. It also ‘seems’ to be on a time-out either that or it disappears if you navigate away from Forumite*. I’ll admit I have never bothered to fully investigate the circumstances under which the ‘edit’ option disappears.

The disappearing button is not an issue for me but it did take me by surprise the first couple of times.

I’m very cynical about using this drug. It does not even get a mention in the popular US drug pages. link

The only places I have found mentions is for Multiple Scelerosis and as a possible Nootopic (smart drug). Tbh this sounds very like fringe medicine where someone wants to carry out an unlicensed trial. This is one case where I would nor trust the doctor as far as I could spit and I would want to see research evidence.

Richard – no arguments from me, I early on made it clear that my experiences were for a borderline case which seemed to have some superficial resemblance to that of the Ukrainian child.

“Success does however depend on where on the autistic spectrum the child’s problems can be placed. It certainly seems to work for those who are on the borderline.”

As you point out Autism presents as a spectrum of both symptoms and  degree of seriousness. I also agree that there is no standard treatment which is one reason why early professional diagnosis and help is important. There do however seem to be common themes in the treatment regimes, with parental involvement/counselling now playing a very important part in treatment. Understandable really as the professional sessions are only an hour or two long  spaced at least a week apart (more typically numbers of weeks) and continual reinforcement of any progress is obviously important as was a staged development program during the intervening periods between professional help.

In today’s NHS real help only comes to those who take an active role themselves.
