My apologies Richard – it was actually Bob’s comment and somehow I conflated it onto your remarks.

“I am not making a racist comment here and no one has AFAIK admitted responsibility, but I would not be a Muslim on the streets of Manchester today.”

As I said, to my mind religion does not equal race, but I would agree that ‘in your face’ religious symbology of whatever faith does not go down well, and especially not at this time.

[edit] Sikhs have nothing to do with Islam, but often get assumed to be of the same faith due to their beards and headdress. – hence my remark about symbology

From what I can see the average PSU puts out about 200 watts per /12v rail (16A), this seems to be mid-range for CBD power supplies – the mega ones seem to be 30A but average around 15A

I’ll stress one last time – I was taking issue for you calling yourself racist. IMO it is totally the wrong word. Race and religion are not the same thing.

Supposedly Jason the bombing took place outside the ticketed area. There was a short interview at lunchtime with the head of the Entertainment & Media Group (I think). He said that the live media industry would have to reassess what they should do in reaction to this and stressed that the bombing took place outside the ‘secure’ area. He said it presented a major problem to his group and they were unsure at this time just how they would respond.

Just to tack onto Dave’s point, Microsoft recommended using Wireshark to check if the measures taken were effective and to help identify those devices still using smb1. I think since then that M$ have issued a tool to automate this checking but I’m not sure if it is generally available. Dave may know more about this.

We marched for our beliefs, and we got jobs. In those days it was fairly easy to get a job. It was even easy to get career related work during the summer break. Not so now.

Bob, which-ever way we old pharts voted I hope that it was done in the belief that the result would be the best for our descendents. For good or ill the die is now cast, I just hope that it does not drive a wedge between us and our continental friends and make us even more insular.

Ed the terrorists we have to deal with atm ARE Muslims. …..

Wrong Bob, totally wrong. This is like saying that all Christians are Seventh Day Adventists. At least one third of Muslims do not share many of the core beliefs of the Sunnis. Even for those of the Sunni branch the majority do not share the same interpretations of the Koran as the Salafists. By failing to name the Saudi/Qatari backed Salafist Extremists as our enemies we alienate the majority of Muslims.

Unfortunately we and the Americans kow-tow to the arms dealers and shy away from pinning blame where it truly resides.

Richard I disagreed that you had made a racist remark, sectarian maybe.

I posted the breaking news just in case anyone was planning to go near that area. Apart from early reports of shots no news since. Hopefully it was just a bit of over-reaction but the security services are stating the need for the public to be alert and vigilant.

Richard, I’m afraid that official facts have not always been completely truthful (Hillsborough being one horrible example). In an age where our system has frequently been shown to have feet of clay, is it any surprise that the public now seek information on a world-wide basis? I think our Government has been slow to recognise this, and their first attempts to come to grips with it smack more of censorship (Cameron filter) than positively embracing it. Of course this does risk exposure to foreign propaganda but that should be a question of education on sifting facts from fiction rather than censorship.

Just to correct a word you used, religion is not the same as race though some try conflate the two things. As an example, there are many Caucasian Muslims, just as there are considerable numbers of Christians in Syria. I therefore do not think it racist to talk about Salafist  Terrorists (though I do find it objectionable to call anyone a Muslim terrorist)

The 60s students marched for very different things such as protesting against the stupid Vietnam War. Lucky for us these protests enabled the Government to be able to ignore US pressure. Others such as Australasia were dragged into the conflict in 1962.

If I were a student today I would instead be protesting at the growing lack of prospects and the way people of this age-group have borne the brunt of the last ten years, without any prospect of future alleviation.

As you say, I doubt that Dave was there, but the disruption and street closures would have made life very difficult for any stranger to the area.

Disasters sell newspapers so the Press will leap on its back. The one thing I really hate is any intrusive interviewing of survivors or grieving friends/relations. I think that stinks and I will boycott any newspaper that gets involved in it.

As you say Steve report just the facts, but I find it irritating that we cover things up but US officials release information well before the UK. They stated that this was a suicide bomber hours ago.

This is a bullet that should have been bitten years ago, but it has to start at some time. It now needs higher taxes on those who can afford it, and eliminating deliberate Government waste such as obscene PFIs. Any caring parent wants to leave their children with something to start them off, and today’s children need that nest-egg more than ever due to the silly cost of housing. That is why this is a stealthy May tax on the young.

When I started work I had to save 15% for the deposit on a house, but the average home for the average young graduate was ‘only’ three to four times gross annual income i.e. in today’s terms i.e. a 2-3 bed house price of around £100000 (starting salary for a Civil Engineer is ~£25,000) and deposit of around £15000. Numbers that are now just about impossible to find unless you live in the very far North of England or an isolated community with poor employment prospects

If I were young I would be out marching in the streets in protest the way we did in the 60s, unfortunately today’s young seem to have been emasculated by bread & circuses.

We need either real democracy (where the public decide all major issues e.g. a ‘Super’ Irish system), or a benevolent dictator.

Anything but the sham ‘We will consult with the Public’ and totally ignore your input until the next election. TBLiar started this sham ‘We will listen to you’ and May seems to be following in his odious footsteps with similar worthless promises over her ‘Dementia tax’ on the young.

Above all, we need to get rid of the MP’s gravy train of external Directorships, Consultancies and Foreign Speaking Tours. If anything smells of corruption these things all come pretty close to stinking of it. Instead, pay MPs a LOT more money equivalent to today’s Senior Civil Servants and ban any sub-rosa income with threats of a ten year jail term and confiscation of all assets. In this respect PFI companies and holdings should be carefully investigated along with any suspicious assets of MPs and Civil Servants who were or are associated with them. Any company or holding making returns of 50+% raises massive warning flags.

Where does this leave me? Strategic voting seems my only option, our system needs a real shake-up.

Richard, if you really want to delve you will need to install Wireshark (or similar) and take a look at ports 445 and 139. There are plenty of ‘Tubes’ on setting up Wireshark to look  only at your smb traffic. This is one such Tube.

It just irritates me that she claims virtues that patently she lacks. Luckily we all know the reality now, and hopefully there will be a large enough opposition to hold her large feet to the fire.

One very minor but sometimes irritating quirk is that navigating away from writing a post (even just checking something within Forumite pages) results in all writing progress being lost. Not a major thing as there are many work-arounds, but it was not a default behaviour in MM.

A quirk that could easily be ignored. In fact I would not even raise it except there is a keyboard combination (no idea what) that my fat-fingers sometimes hit that results in the same as selecting the browser back-button. If I knew that particular keyboard combo I’d just remap them!

As we were referring to the Middle East, a slightly NSFW joke, but it is all in the mind!:

Three guys were on a trip to Arabia. One day, they stumbled into a harem tent filled with over 100 beautiful women. They started getting friendly with all the women, when suddenly the Sheik came in.

“I am the master of all these women. No one else can touch them except me. You three men must pay for what you have done today. You will be punished in a way corresponding to your professions.”

The sheik turns to the first man and asks him what he does for a living. “I’m a cop”, says the first man.

“Then we will shoot your penis off!”, said the sheik. He then turned to the second man and asked him what he did for a living.

“I’m a firemen”, said the second man.

“Then we will burn your penis off!”, said the sheik.

Finally, he asked the last man, “And you, what do you do for a living?”.

And the third man answered, with a sly grin, “I’m a lollipop salesman!”

The same ‘liquid’ weight system was applied to the smaller measures which is why there are 20 ‘fluid’ ounces in a pint, rather than the sixteen in a pound weight.

One of my uncles ran a pub and although he was completely above board with respect to booze measures he still visibly paled when the Weights and Measures guy arrived with his box of weights. Maybe it was the thought of all the black-market bacon, cheese, smoked salmon etc he had hidden away. (rationing was still in place until the 50s)

Richard – I know no more than Bleeping reveals, your guess is as good as mine.  Probably not, but some ‘kind’ person has apparently  rewritten the malware to work more reliably on XP (which it mostly did not) and later versions of Windows.

Just to be contentious and building on Dave’s reply, Linux is the main problem!

SMB as you point out is a Windows standard (built on the back of an IBM protocol), while Samba is the open software clone. Samba frequently had problems connecting with later versions of the Server Message Block (SMB), while vendors tended to use embedded Linux chips in their devices as these were cheap and carried no Windows ‘tax’. Following from this they tended to set their device to SMB-1 as this could (more or less) be guaranteed to connect with anything. For many years vendors would default to SMB-1 even when SMB2/3 etc were available as this pretty much guaranteed that they could talk to old routers, modems, and other intelligent devices. There are probably zillions of such devices that have never had a firmware update since their installation and still use SMB-1.

That is no excuse for the Buffalo device. I do agree that devices should no longer be sold defaulting to an obsolete standard, but Buffalo et al will have a devil of a problem convincing naive customers that it is their fault for trying to connect to an ancient router/switch etc., and that the problem sits squarely on their obsolete kit.

While funny as jokes, it is always worth checking out such awards in Snopes before citing them in any discussion about the US litigious system. (I’m afraid Mrs Grazinski is an urban myth, much as I’d like to believe it!).

[edit] I can quite see the logic behind the original myth. When I lived in the Middle East barely a week would go by without some rich & stupid Prince ramming his Testarossa (or whatever) at 150 mph into a round-about on the outskirts of town and going into an unexpected journey to the morgue surrounded by bits of the car. AXA insurance company used to collect these bits and pile them up into a gruesome 30 ft high pyramid outside their office block.
