Even worse then, Tata totally failed to have a world-wide disaster recovery policy based on just  a one centre failure. Obviously there was no critical failure analysis and integration with the Tata infrastructure was naff.

We had a data centre right under a major flight path and one of our critical failure scenarios was a 747 crashing into the building and taking everything out, comms, systems, staff. The impacts of the failure of each major item  had aplan. All were then then merged into one overall horror scene. I will admit some scenarios needed 14 days to recover but all included sections on PR and close customer liaison. This was a key element in the Annual Audit (shudder) andfailure for the data centre management to have demonstrable rehearsed plans could be demotion or sackable. The disaster books were huge series of  tomes kept in two different locations plus the secure store.

Tata’s obvious failure to have such plans for a location that close to Heathrow is beyond belief. This is not an acceptable excuse – it is even worse!

[edit] I should have said our immediate backup was a ‘hot-site’ that would have recovered us to start of day. Still pretty horrible but it would buy time. I would have thought that today’s  tech, cloud and journalling only minutes would be lost and give a very viable situation. It is a shame the BBC obviously keep their own tech staff out of the loop or they could have primed the BBC reporter to respond with some horrible statements/questions.

The budget is of course important, SWMBO has similar requirements and would like a HP Spectre 2 detachable even if it is second-hand.  (I think that it is the looks).  I’m hoping price plus availability will push her towards an HP x210!  I’m keeping a low profile for now – I dare not push as she would probably dig her heels in!

[edit] Having looked with her my personal impression is that convertibles leave me cold, extra complication for marginal convenience. Detachables are a much better form factor even if I can see plug-in accidents waiting to happen!

Exactly what my mate complains about even though they get an effective extra 90 day credit from him!

To return to the 8K I posted earlier – it looks possible that 12K resolution may be possible on a future equivalent of a 4K box, and only need a tiny increase in bandwidth to gain the effect (1 colour bit per pixel). I’m assuming that I am reading and extrapolating this Gizmodo article correctly!

You are beginning to sound like a real salesman Dave!

                Good for you

Don’t make the same mistake that a mate of mine makes (still making the same mistake unfortunately). He puts all his efforts into chasing jobs, closing the sale and doing them but he really hates billing them out and chasing down his money! When we go out to the pub I sometimes ask him how the cash-flow is going, but I know that he gets more than enough nagging from both his wife and his Accountant.

He normally has a moan about his big Corporate accounts, some of whom will not even look at an invoice for three to six months. I tell him to put in a late payment clause in his standard terms. It probably will not make a real practical difference as most of his invoices go out three months later than they should!

I just remembered that Bruce said he had some insider data which showed that the manufacturing location was the most important factor for drive reliability. Based on 20 years out of date data I would also tend to avoid certain countries (Malaysia in particular), and prefer others (Taiwan was high both for Bruce and I),  but a lot can change in 20 years.

Current draw is affected by the load on the motor and its rpm. Maximum draw takes place on start-up or if the fan is obstructed, Both a 1.5 amp and a 3 amp wart will result in eventual fire – though I grant the 3amp supply could result in it happening more quickly.

In either case both have dangers if left unattended or if you fall asleep near one. Sticking it on a fire-proof tray and making sure that there is nothing nearby that can catch fire might be a good idea. it would also be a good idea to make sure the fan cannot fall down and get jammed. Overall it is sightly dodgy duty in a bedroom.

To be honest I worry little about usb devices as they should have a current draw limiting device integrated into them – though I’ll admit that is a risk of the fuse not being there with market-stall kit. The bigger danger imo is the actual wall wart, really cheap warts could pose significant dangers. Those are things I’m much happier buying when they are supplied by Amazon rather than going for one from an unknown Chibay source.

With respect to ‘lasting’ the make of the drive is important Dwynne will I’m sure recite all the woes he has had with one particular HDD brand. Touch wood in recent years I have had no problems with hybrids or ssds, so I have no axe to grind.

@Dave – it looks neat, but I’d have to shell out £130 for a 16 port PoE *switch as well so I’ll hold off until my current el-cheapo TPLink access point dies. It is however something to consider in a new set-up or when replacing an Ethernet jack. I’d probably go for it if I was starting all over again.

*I could get away with a cheapo injector or a smaller add-on PoE switch but that just seems to be geographically spreading out the same equivalent kit as a TPLink Access point.

I’m not plugging either 4K or 8K as it is even difficult to get good 4k content that fully utilises its capabilities (4K Life of Pi is an exception). I was really responding to the ‘money no object’ future proofing question and Dave’s comment that wifi is good enough, hence the 8k comment.

If I was one of the squillionaires that Dave deals with then I would certainly have one of my minions throw cat 7a into the utility trench!

For me cat5a is more than good enough. I have to use a wired set-up as a house with internal walls constructed of high mineral content brick with numerous steel joists is a test for any single wifi without a lot of assistance. (Foil covered bubble wrap as used in insulation also seems pretty effective at signal attenuation despite being a carp insulator)

I use a 3 amp plug-in wart as a general purpose power supply for a variety of things ranging from a raspberry pi to recharging a pad to powering usb fans, to recharging usb devices.

The one you linked to is only 1 amp so it probably would not charge some pads, but it is more than good enough for the roughly 0.5 amp rating of the usb that you linked.

If you want a more general purpose power supply go for a 3 amp supply something like this.

My mistake substitute 8K Ultra-high-definition television for 5K (probably there will be no 5K), 8K runs at 120fps and requires a bandwidth of 48Gbps. Apparently the Japanese think this will be the next thing after 4K and not many years hence! (look up 8K UHDTV if you are interested). You would REALLY be future proofing your house if you designed around that!

If you were designing and building a new house from scratch for yourself  you might well include house-wide utility ducting and install Cat6 to future-proof it and give super-fast broadband (5K TV?) throughout the house.

A person I know is doing a new house development (for sale) and although all the infrastructure ducting is going in, it will only be Cat5e that is installed. High speed wired broadband throughout the home is a selling point, 5K TV outlets are not quite there as yet! As pointed out Cat6 is more expensive both in terms of cable and installation.

@Steve I could not find the ‘cynical’ emoji!

Of course I am not ‘surprised’ I am however surprised the the British Government fell into this trap. IT is a component of our strategic infrastructure and we should guard it jealously.

I have dealt with JVs, and Distributors over a greater part of the world (ex Eastern Europe or Russia) I would rank India as one of the most difficult places to find good reliable partners or agents. A major problem with Indian relationships is that many people still have a large anti-colonial chip on their shoulder. A requirement to immediately address a critical issue rapidly become a basis for discussion leading up to prolonged negotiation (very analogous to contract ‘Extras’) . A LOT of time can be wasted.  Dealing with any of India’s major surrounding countries is like a breath of fresh air in comparison.

I have worked with an Indian JV – I pity the poor BA expat who has to write the report explaining all this. CYA in the UK can be bad, but you ain’t seem nothing if you haven’t witnessed it in India.

The chances of a single point power failure cratering a world-wide network are slim to none. Accepting the official reason that it was a power failure, after much head wagging and nodding they will finally discover that it was all due to a poor untouchable with a mop who was immediately dismissed and has now disappeared.

What I really do not understand is why MI5 is the only group cited as being capable of monitoring these people. The police Special branch used to play this role and increasing the police force as suggested by the Opposition could at least transfer some of the work-load required to police general extremist activity. There is in any case a considerable overlap between terrorism, the funding of terrorism and what could be considered to be normal police work. The Albanian Mafia for example are believed to play a significant role in drugs & the smuggling of illegal immigrants with the proceeds going towards funding terrorism.

I sense another May weak wobble may yet emerge. I would not just have a Schadenfreude if this happens but would guffaw out loud. When she was Home Secretary she pushed through the emasculation and politicization (Police Kommissars) of our police forces. :negative:

The article is worth a read FS! The detection mechanism is likely based on the vortex wake the sub makes as it travels along. Apparently these faint wakes (‘fossil turbulence’) may be detectable on the surface for a considerable period. The Russians detect the wake then plot roughly where it ends as a starting point for other detection methods.  Other mechanisms such as the Debye effect might also be used for movement detection. The thermal layer disturbance from the nuclear reactor plume. would still be in evidence even when the sub is at standstill unless the reactor can be completely shut-down, but this may limit how long a sub could stay on position. The article speculates on the possibility of combining these detection mechanisms with techniques such as hunter-killer drone subs.

While the fossil wake detection referred to in the article is speculative it was interesting to note a comment that Russian Subs are fitted with small vortex unwinding propellers and vortex attenuators on their screws. Not by any means proof of a Russian interest in vortex wakes, as probably such devices would also decrease the noise from the screws.
