+1 for the SSD remark, but do make sure you continue to have good backups!
SSDs do not fail slowly like the hdd of JCD — they drop down dead as though they have been pole-axed. No warnings are given. You cannot even get a hint by looking at read/write error data as the controller can in some cases be the single point of failure.
May at last recognises that Government strategy in containing Terrorism is broken. I just hope that her ‘really hard embarrassing talks’, are not only within the UK but also with the Arab States who’s wealthy people have been funding Western terrorism. Maybe she should open a new friendly dialogue with Iran as a warning (My enemy’s enemy is my friend).
If you read the Beeb link all the way through you will see that a BBC female reporter very narrowly missed death on London Bridge. As a result there are a lot of on-the-spot interviews, video and photos. Also in that link you will see that the Anti-terrorist Police did not arrive until much later so putting yet another lie to May’s contention that manpower has to go to the the Security Services. We need more police period, and more of these should be fully trained firearms police.
NO I am not saying ‘arm every policeman’, there are some that I quite frankly would not trust with a Taser (too quick with a night-stick in the gut if you know what I mean). However I have every confidence that the modern selection system does not now allow such people near firearms lethal or not.
John, I have to be very honest unless you are on the gaming bleeding edge or running lots of scientific simulations you do not need a new rig. Until Microsoft sabotaged the Windows 10 beta I was very happy running a six years old box, and it would probably be still pretty usable now. My current box is five years old. It still runs the latest games (OK I had to swap out the gpu but nothing else). I do not plan to replace it for another couple of years and when I do that replacement is most likely to favour electricity savings rather than grunt.
Building a PC is no longer the challenge it was. Its just Lego with electronics.
Imo better to play with things that do not cost a lot but may make people say wow! For example a diy Hololens (sort-of) .
Depends what you do John maybe a AMD Ryzen build would suit you. Cheaper than some of the others you mentioned.
True Steve, but I think I would have little excuse driving having taken a drug known to affect coordination, drowsiness, reaction speed and cause possible hallucinations! Although I’m 90% sure I’m not impaired (based on playing Witcher) I cannot really be certain, so I will not drive for the next few weeks. However, as it apparently had no impact on me I would not know there was even a risk if I had not read the small print. In any case isn’t ‘operating machinery’ synonymous with ‘driving a car’, that would be how I would read it.
As a society we nanny most things and there are some I totally disagree with, but at least I am able to make a concious decision to ignore those I personally deem silly. This is one where I think a bit of nannyism could really improve road safety as most people ignore or overlook small print.
Dwynne no real arguments from me, but as I said a packet design change to include a big ‘DO NOT DRIVE’ warning/icon would be a sensible NHS requirement. Small print (and it IS ruddy small) is easily overlooked and literacy is not a legal driving requirement.
Unfortunately it sounds like a screwdriver job and hope that Dave is wrong.
I personally dislike USB drives I’ve always had a problem with them. My current rig has a hot-plug sata6 port on the top of the case – brilliant addition to the case design and one I will look for in any replacement.
I hope you are happy in Manchester Drezha.
As a ‘Soft Southerner’ I like going to Manchester – it would be a perfect location with a dash more Global Warming to offset the b-awful cold wet winter weather.
Just so I do not upset Lee I’ll add that York/Sheffield/Leeds are nice as well except that the weather has always been even worse and straight from Norway during my visits. Global Warming would be a definite benefit!
Try the Seagate Utilities?
Google were planning this long before Brexit. Corporate Yanks above all like London for its proximity to the politicians. Big corporations value lobbying, and lobbying from head office (not rational I know). Next in their pecking order are the International Airports and the City of London/Advertising Industry etc. Imo only OxBridge, Manchester or Birmingham could pull together an opposing bid but they would not tick every box.
I agree the North needs more big businesses, especially the ones built around the ‘intellectual’ end as these are where London makes its money, which in turn attracts others etc. Unfortunately this really requires twisting company’s arms with huge financial incentives such as those of the EU’s Regional Development Schemes but unfortunately our Civil Service’s heart never seemed to be in it the way the Irish, French, Italians and Germans have used/abused the scheme. Maybe Brexit will make the Government look more to the North but I doubt it unless we get Federalisation and completely break up the UK.
+1 Wasbit you have my vote for this week’s prize!
It has now all been blamed on the failure of an UPS under the control of the facilities management company. El Reg has the details, but similar to the points raised by El Reg it just raises a whole bunch of ancillary more serious questions about the IT management system.
In simple terms my concerns are these:
a) IT pros know only too well that sh*t happens and that multiple critical failures sometimes happens. Systems and procedures are designed to cope with these circumstances. I’m sure that regardless of who was actually managing the IT there would have been an existing basic setup that handled such eventualities.
b) The procedures failed – why?
c) Why did the failure of the power in one facility knock-out the hot backup site?
d) Why did the failure of Heathrow cascade around the world crashing all other BA systems?
e) Was the failure in any way related to the Tata Cloud system used for facility management?
BA & TATA (of course) deny that the failure was related to outsourcing.
The law on drug driving does not differentiate between legal or illegal drugs – many people fail to understand that many prescribed legal drugs can put them into the category of ‘drug driving’ if used correctly and most certainly if taken incorrectly.
True, but you would need to read all the very small print on the leaflet inside the packet to find that out. I currently have a staph infection of a sinus following a tooth extraction that went wrong and was given a course of both antibiotic and antimicrobial drugs. There are no big warning notices on the outside of either packet.
I have to be honest. If I had been given these when thirty years younger I would just have read when and how many pills to take, then done so without a second thought. However being a bit of a distrusting barsteward with respect to drugs I now read the small print, and hidden in the antimicrobial leaflet was a warning that just about ticks all the boxes on not using while a driver: It causes sleepiness, affects coordination and reaction speed, and may cause hallucinations (It disappointingly has none of these affects on me!). It finishes by the usual warning about not using machinery which I presume includes cars.
My bottom line to this is that while I totally agree with the necessity of this UK law there really should be a change in the packet design for drugs known to impair driving ability, otherwise the 40 years old me could easily get into trouble without even knowing the risk.
I was born in ’42 but as I cannot lay legitimate claim to my favourite pi-day birthday 3/1/42, I think I’ll just go for 22 years back from today – old enough to have most of the years of study behind me and young enough to be completely irresponsible.
“Why is 52 weeks as a kid sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long and 52 weeks as an adult soooooo short? ”
The scientific answer is so depressing I wasted half an hour trying to find a joke about it!
IF you have to cut police then rationalising makes sense. However it makes a hell of a lot more sense to rationalise top-down.the Chief Constables of the four or so counties in the south lobbied hard to amalgamate but Reichsleiter May (sorry Home Secretary May) wanted political animals running the police because they were giving her too much grief so she put in her disastrous Police & Criminal Kommisars instead.
The criminals now commute across county boundaries with impunity to do their evils as they know there is very little chance of their being recognised by the non-existent police patrols. They know exactly which roads to use to avoid ANPRs then catch a commuter train. If instead the county rationalisation been done there would have been far more scope for investment in joined-up systems and perhaps a start made at tackling white collar computer crime.
Since the May reductions in Police numbers we have had quite a number of break-ins in the Southern Counties where thieves have said ‘the hell with subtlety and noise and just used a 3lb hammer on the patio window or back door frame. The noise is less than you might hope – my neighbour had theirs burgled via the patio and although I heard noises I thought they were just working on their house. (they had not said they were out for the day).
Better investments are locked side-gates and a visible security camera eyeing up the gate.
It is however worth having your front door lock anti-snap/bump – there are videos of how a thief can quickly open a door using a vibrating sex-toy and lock-pick to open an old style door in a manner and time which makes it look as though he has been given a key. These are normally opportunistic thieves who just happen to see a family taking off for their weekly shop. They often leave very little mess and are selective in only taking small high value things which tends to delay theft discovery until they are in the next town/county.
Bah humbug — I’m quite happy being 22 (for ever!)
Don’t get on the subject of burglars with out searching You Tube on ‘Picking Locks’. A retired Police Inspector pointed me in that direction a few years ago. It made me quite paranoid for a while (changed out my old original Eurolocks). Unfortunately it wasn’t until I had done all that when he said the punchline ‘ Of course now that you have made all your locks secure they will just go around the back and smash in your patio doors.’
Sometimes you cannot win which is a lesson that applies equally well to PC security. No matter how secure you make your PC there are other bits of kit such as routers that seem to have deliberate in-built insecurity!
