I dunno I had to do a new one as there seemed to be little facility in Patpal to modify a regular payment.

“My mother bought a refurbished ipad mini from my cousin a while back”

TBH that suggests the battery rather than the refurbisher. It IS possible to do a diy replacement, but I have never done it being put off by the iFixit difficulty bar! link

Fiddling with the switch has a similar iFixit difficulty rating.

Unfortunately the iPad mini has always had a poor diy rating.

          Try a reset?

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I’ve now run out of ideas.

Dwynne, the outgoing Met Police Commissioner spelt out in an interview that Met Police cuts were scheduled to carry on for the next two or three years. Feb 2017. May cannot pretend that she was not warned that her cuts have real consequences.

I liked his comment ‘”You need cops. You can’t throw laptops at crowds.”. This reveals that the Government has foolishly bet that technology and masses of irrelevant data can substitute for manpower and human intelligence.

It is also clear from passing  comments on the three London murderers that low level resource allocations have been made when it came to decisions to follow up on given intelligence. If there is only one slot left for surveillance then someone would have to be carrying a box labelled ‘Instruments of Death’ before some poor sod could be certain they had made the correct decision. I do not blame the Met for failures I blame May’s ill-thought strategy and her unsafe handling.

If you can wait, try just switching it on. Ignore the flashing and completely discharge it by leaving it on for a few hours. Then try a 6 hour high speed recharge. If no improvement the battery has definitely turned into a Norwegian Parrot.

I found the answer to my own question – it was illegal. The only answer to why he was not arrested is that we do not have enough police to do the job in a proper manner.

May cannot be trusted to run the country on her own, and certainly is not a demonstrably safe pair of hands for Brexit. To answer your question Richard no, I and others in the South will not be voting for Corbyn (and certainly not the numerically challenged History graduate), but neither will the Conservative party get a smooth ride.

A hung parliament would be a much safer option for the country and prevent insanities by either the left or right.

I do not disagree with the sentiments, but is it actually an illegal act to display an ISIS flag? If not the law needs a change pdq.

I’m afraid I have to lay all this at the door of May. When she was Home Secretary she looked to do things on the cheap, and was conned into thinking all you have to do is electronically spy on people more effectively. She jumped at this option and sacked half our police force as a result. No doubt there were warning flags being posted up all over the place by the automated systems, but some poor barsteward had to triage them all and do their very best with their extremely limited manpower.

I’ll get my revenge at the ballot box, and I suspect a lot of others will too. May could well teeter right on the edge of defeat. The smell of blood is leaking from the ‘Submarine’

An iPad draws 12 watts at 5.1 volts when charging at optimum rate i.e about 2.1 amps. A ‘normal’ USB port is around 0.5 amps +/- a bit. It will recharge an iPad but very s..l…o…w…l…y! The screen flashing for a bit like that is normally a sign that the battery is completely out of juice. Use the high speed charger (2+amps?) and charge it up for four to six hours. Do NOT inspect it for at least four hours as ideally you want to recondition the unintelligent battery controller and kick it back to life. If it still does not switch on I suspect a dead battery.

The life of current iPad batteries is a mere two years, older iPad 2s with original batteries often last longer. If you have to replace a battery Apple charge an obscene £100 – bin it and buy an Amazon Fire if on a bargain offer. I find the screen on the Fire is just as good as that of my iPad2. for reading books etc.

John, if the SSD is just going to be a boot/OS disk and your existing drive is going to be programs/docs then you may need to do a bit of housekeeping in order to separate the OS from programs & data.

I’ll get a bit contentious with my views on SSD sizing. It has been my experience that you need 120 GB just to keep Windows happy as some of its ‘upgrades have been a huge 20+GB and also there are a few non-OS programs that are ‘picky’ about requiring to be on the C-Drive. IMO it becomes essential to have all your personal stuff on a different drive and make sure you know how to specify which drive is used for future additional installations.

The UK has a long history of harbouring unsavoury characters, much to the annoyance at times by other nations. Cynically I think we used to hold a view that it was better to have them inside the tent peeing out, rather than the other way round. IF this is a reflection of the ‘realpolitik’ then it obviously needs to be reviewed. We also need to sensitively review the grounds we apply for political asylum – this is a very difficult area in that some may have genuine grounds despite fleeing from an apparently stable country. I have in mind for example Muslim apostates who face certain death in some ‘civilised’ countries. Some way must be found to both test their stated grounds for asylum and monitor them during a probationary period.

I have to say that these are not the only people of concern. The ones we should really worry about are the ones we do not know about, who have been smuggled into the country through our very porous sea borders (we have a laughable number of coast guard cutters for our extent of shoreline). Perhaps we need to look once again at National ID cards as a way of culling out the illegals, or we need to clamp down on everyday existing documentation e.g. Tax Identification Number, Health, National Insurance, driver Licence, Birth Certificate etc Roll all these into one and intern any who have not got all of a given set of base docs.

I see that there are now four countries who have cut off diplomatic ties for harbouring and promoting terrorism. With both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia banning travel into Qatar (overflights as well?) this effectively isolates Qatar geographically as well.

Maty still hasn’t responded to demands that she publishes a Government Report that identifies those who fund and promote terrorism in the West. Perhaps the reliance of the UK on Qatari gas and the huge airbase in Doha may be two reasons.

If you would like a preview of the likely contents of this secret report then I would be very surprised if it differs too much from this New Republic report. Those of you who like diplomatic intrigue would do well to read the report. The young Al Thani ruler has obviously read his Machiavelli – as what other model could there be for someone who has simultaneous alliances with groups that are in open or undeclared war with one another? Just as a small example Qatar has alliances with Al Qaeda,, Hamas and the US and all at the same time1 Well worth a read for this alone. Of course their young leader failed to read the bit that says: “but  above all do not get caught , deny everything”!

What the report fails to mention is that there are no more than 250000 actual Qataries in the country’ and they are outnumbered about ten to one by itinerant workers. This understandably scares the hell out of the leadership especially as the army is a mercenary one and there was a notable incident some years ago where members of the Royal Family were at a military review only to get a ‘friendly’ artillery barrage bracketing their viewing stand.

It is going to be a very interesting period for a diverse range of companies who must be wondering how this will all impact. Directly impacted for example are Sainsburys, The Shard and the football club Paris St Germain. Others such as ExxonMobil (Qatari gas) must also be a bit worried about impacts and the discussions that have allegedly been held between the Iranians and Qataries.

Sometimes Princes can get too clever for their own boots!

[edit] The actual number of real Qataries is apparently a State Secret, I found a figure of 250,000 based on demographic population projections this report says 300000, but the outnumbering by a factor of ten is still roughly correct.

You beat me to it  Dave. If John looks in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, on page 30 there is even a picture showing a drive being replaced. Instead of the hdd shown you put in an SSD in its place. Although an SSD will make your box sing, big SSDs are expensive and you might want to look at a hybrid drive instead. Hybrids work by using a large SSD cache that sits in front of a nearly normal hdd. Over a period of time (hours) its firmware learns how you use the PC and intelligently stores it in the SSD bit. Imo it gives probably 60% of the benefit of a SSD but it is great for Steam storage. (Just search using the term hybrid drive – typically you can get a fast 2TB hybrid for <£100 while the equivalent SSD would cost five times as much.

There are other ways of, if not stopping, reducing carnage from terrorists using vehicles as weapons. Poles, lighting standards, flower boxes all provide potential refuge and eliminate high speed clear runs. Some would look terrible, while better designed ones could actually add to the street scene.

Having been a commuter who walked over London Bridge, I can see the difficulties in adding pedestrian obstructions, but fencing/barriers between the road and the pavement would be an easy solution (only a suicidal lunatic attempts to cross between pavements in that area).. OK it costs money but it is well within the Mayor’s remit and is probably cheaper than other options. The same applies to all other major London crossing points (ex the Millenium bridge).

I’m glad to see that the UK Government suppressed evil links between terrorism and the Qatari/Saudis/Kuwaitis is at last starting to emerge. Hopefully the UAE’s actions with ostracising Qatar will spill the complete bag of evil worms including their role in destabilising Bosnia and causing that conflict. (an open secret when I was in the Middle East).

I’ll make my Old Phart confession. I previously mentally lumped Ariana Grande into the usual ‘teenie booper airhead’ category. I recant, she isn’t!

The last few weeks have demonstrated to me (and I’m sure others) tha she is an extremely courageous, well educated articulate young woman who has displayed amazing maturity and sensitivity in her dealings with both the direct victims of the attack and the others who although not directly hurt were suddenly faced with just how fragile was their grip on life. Last night’s concert I’m sure helped a lot of them face up to the world again.

This was not a PR stunt. I’ve been involved in a number so I can now smell a PR stunt a mile away. This was a heartfelt emotional response from the artiste directly at the centre of the atrocities.

                                      Well done Ariana!

Dwynne, stopping terrorism is something quite different, and I agree that simply arming more police would not eliminate or stop terrorism. May has made a huge number of errors that have resulted in ineffective intervention with those revealed to have terrorist links. There are lots of stories flying around with respect to these murderers being previously reported to the terrorist hotline with no action taken, and that she eliminated one Social Services group who were carrying out anti-radicalisation in their area as being too ‘risky’. This is breaking news so I have little detail – listen to the Beeb and read the press for more.

All that said I DO support more armed officers on the streets (and not just London). Having armed officers eliminated these murderers within eight minutes — imagine the horrors that would have perpetrated had they not been able to arrive on the scene so quickly.

Please note these were ‘ordinary’ firearms officers not the so-called Anti-terrorist Police who May keeps trying to Blair as being where ‘extra’ police funds have been spent. In fact the numbers of trained firearms officers has dropped by a thousand during May’s tenure – obviously a pretty carp decision. ALL the armed police have been stripped from our area as a result. I just hope that there isn’t an incident here as a direct outcome of May’s decisions. Incidentally we do not even have PCSOs in our area they too were stripped out by a local Police Political Kommisar who was even more zealously following May’s party line!

I’m fully in accord with Bob;s initial statements – but it strikes me things have got unnecessarily squirrely as you are basically offering open access to all, and just asking that a donation be considered for all the good work you do.

Just like PBS in the US you are offering a ‘bragging rights tote-bag’ of only a nominal value to regular supporters – Seems fair to me, but I’m quite happy even without the ‘tote-bag’/gold-star. above all appease the tax-man!

                                            That’s a non-starter, then.

Don’t dismiss it so quickly.  I’m up for a fiver/month. It only needs nine others who are willing to match and it is mostly covered. Whether there are nine who can afford to give regularly is another question to which I do not know the answer.

Whether it needs a pay-wall is a totally different question. Earlier Lee offered some sort of flexibility but it really depends on the degree of commitment he receives. If he gets (say) £800/year committed he obviously has more scope for flexibility.
