Compared with the 1950s both parties are closer to what was then termed Communism. In reality the main differences now are in which branch of Economics they hold to be their font of wisdom. The Tory party are wedded to the Friedmanite free market which works well when things are favourable but when it doesn’t it falls back onto austerity which punishes the masses for the sins of the few. The Labour party are the converse, their Keynesian tax and spend works well in times of uncertainty and depression (like we now face), but rapidly degenerates into a TBLiar/Brune spend-fest when times look positive.

I cannot criticise Corbyn’s views on the nuclear option, as we would be in deep poo if ever we got to that point. I personally like the Duke’s view on defence that he stated some while ago. IIRC it was to just pretend you have an whole arsenal of nuclear weapons, but secretly spend the money on other things!

I don’t think the point we should focus on, is where the pilots are from. ☺️

No you are quite correct, in fact the pilots could well be Yanks. Of more importance is that the planes apparently belong to the UK and are fatally flawed.

It cannot stay out of the news for long. Grounded again as it suffocates its pilots! They may even have been Brits that were suffocated as the report refers to Lightning IIs

Probably dates back to the 55mph speed limit that used to be pretty much mandatory on all US highways. Some states used to do a number on all out of state cars that went even 1 mph over the limit. Many small districts funded their entire police operations on the proceeds. Things may have changed but 25 years ago I used to be paranoid about adhering to the limit when driving across State boundaries. Mid/Southern US was the worst in this. Believe me there is nothing more terrifying than having a cop flag down your car and swagger over with gun very visible and accessible  in his holster – cruise control was an essential!

They are insensitive enough to choose Jeremy Hunt!

The problem is that all the ‘names’ are damaged goods, one way or another. Politicians are like rats, one sign of weakness and they all start biting one another.

Looks like I was correct about youth votes influencing the Election. Some old phart was on Radio 4 complaining that his son lost his seat due to all the students in Leeds and that the same had happened in Canterbury.

I hope this gets highly publicised as it could raise the youth vote to 90%!

Sounds EXACTLY like the problems I had with my wife’s computer. Obviously I can only guess but  it appears that a secured efi disk cannot just be recovered if somehow the boot partition gets stuffed. As said before I had to completely remove all the partitions i.e. a total disk wipe, then recover from an Acronis usb boot stick and let the full Acronis recovery run. I assume AOMEI has a similar facility.

This Beeb link more or less says the same thing about the DUP, but points out the enormous difficulty of doing a viable Brexit deal.

Life gets interesting. Life could be even more interesting in 21 months time if no deal looks capable of being struck with the EU, as a hard Brexit then becomes automatic.

At that point I can see panicked steps towards yet another referendum (with hard facts and less lies). If we get near to that point a sneaky EU could offer face savers such as permanent imposition of some of the restrictions to free movement that all EU countries are already allowed to impose but only on a temporary basis. I think we can abrogate the Human Misrights bit as I do not think that is intrinsic to EU law. All the EU need to do is give our slimy politicians ways of wriggling out of responsibility and still claim success..

The U is the important bit – Unionist, i.e. they want to preserve the status quo of Ulster being part of the UK. They have had a historical alliance with the Tory party. Other than that – lots of Ulster infrastructure investment and an open border with the EU will be high on their agenda. Pork Barrel time!

I think the prize for the best summation of the Election goes to the Beeb:

                              Almost everybody lost
This is a result that brought disappointment to all parties.

                              The Conservatives lost their majority.

Labour suffered its third defeat in a row.

The Liberal Democrats found themselves treading water.

The SNP’s independence bandwagon came to a juddering halt.

                              And UKIP imploded.

It is not only Conservatives who will be asking why Mrs May changed her mind about holding a snap election.

The only winners are perhaps the DUP – to whom she seems to have awarded the role of kingmakers.”

Interesting for brexit indeed. Sad for the country.

I guess we will see. There are pluses and minuses to a ‘weak’ Government.

On the plus side it pretty much eliminates any and all extremist views whether left or right.

On the minus side it does become very much a ‘management by committee’ which tends to kick any hard decisions into the long grass for ‘future resolution’. Any bets on High Speed Rail, or the Third London Airport suddenly finding issues that need more study and review?

However that cannot apply to Brexit the two year clock has already lost an eighth of its time due to May’s misjudgement.

[edit] I see there was one election result which shows that there is some justice in fate:

Minister for the Cabinet Office Ben Gummer, architect of the Conservative Party’s manifesto and the man responsible for “digital transformation”, has lost his seat in the general election

We can only wait for the political commentators to pull this apart but from my perspective this was a badly run Conservative election trying to bring its own house in order and take opportunistic advantage of what appeared to be a divided and leaderless opposition.

I think there were a number of elements to the failure of May’s poor judgement.

                                  a) It was portrayed by the Conservatives as being an election about needing her boring ‘strong and stable’ leadership to carry us through Brexit. There was however an undertone that this meant a hard Brexit in the very likely event she would not get what she wanted from the other 27 countries. This probably lost her core Conservative votes from those who feared a hard Brexit. I don’t find Chelsea a surprise as a result. Then her ‘strong and stable’ pose soon melted under a badly misjudged Altzheimer Tax which caused her to so publicly and quickly  U-Turn and get the disastrous ‘weak & Wobbly’ epithet levelled against her. It looks like the nearly 50% of the population who did not want Brexit have ‘won’ by pretty much won by now taking a hard Brexit off the table.

                                  b) The public were not so easily gulled into thinking this was all about Brexit. They listened to her all too vague promises about social issues with no firm commitment other than to throw things into Committee who would be ‘listened to’ (huh!) etc, Instead the public decided to judge her on her record in Government. Unfortunately the Terrorist murders brought her judgement and record into sharp relief and was found wanting.

                                  c) The young are tired of ten years of austerity that has fallen mainly on their shoulders. This brought out a significant young vote who generally voted Labour.

In my view we are back pretty much where we started except that the Conservative government is weakened and Labour strengthened – a total lose-lose for May. The only positive element being any Brexit negotiations have had the nuclear option disarmed.

I do not know AOMEI so can only speak from an Acronis perspective. The only time I ran into trouble was when restoring SWMBO’s box (had to be!). This has two drives on it with the boot drive a full GPT set-up but the second data drive is not GPT (lvm disk).  I was not concentrating on what I was doing and assigned the boot partitions to the wrong drive. Total screw-up ensued. I had to kill everything then wipe both drives (I had efi boots in two places!), then repartition everything then start the restore again. Without doing that the Acronis restore got quite confused.

All this sounds very vaguely like your problem. If so, sponge everything clean, remove ALL partitions, and start again.

There was a very interesting piece on Radio 4 this morning that unfortunately does not appear to be available on iPlayer. In this two security specialists went over all the terrorist incidents and for the first time to my knowledge pointed out the obvious. All the recent murderers and arrested terrorists were of Arabic extraction, all were Sunni Muslims and all belonged to one of the extremists sects that can be lumped together as Wahhabi Salafists. They then went on to say that the absence of local officers impeded intelligence collection, They recognised the difficulty of directly inserting plain clothes officers into this environment, but said that the indirect intelligence from beat PCs/PCSOs could have filled some gaps.

A Beeb clip last night showed film taken last year on how one of the whistle blowers of the London murderers suffered criminal assault at a gathering of the local sect. Despite complaining to the Police and Anti-Terrorist Branch there was no follow-up even though this should apparently have raised the terrorists profile into one prone to using violence. I guess lack of resources and prioritisation were to blame, and all on May’s watch as Home Secretary.

Earlier that same evening I went to a local (non-political) Residents Meeting and the crowd were absolutely incensed at the Police cuts that had taken place in the local area. They demanded the Committee take action – fat chance of that doing any good. Luckily one of the Committee pointed out they could take their own action at the Ballot box on Thursday.

This is all adding up to be a torrid time for May.
