Cobian Backup only does files it is not a full system + file backup like Macrium. Tbh I only do a full system when I have installed new software. For backup of work, music etc a file backup system like Cobian is much more useful than (say) Acronis. It does both full and incremental file backup to schedule  and it uses shadow copy s o it does not interfere with running files. It can use ftp so will happily backup locally or to a remote location.

Sorry no, but if you are using Windows 10 it is very important that you make a USB boot disk with whatever backup utility you are using. Uefi on modern PCs can be most unforgiving if you make any mistakes when restoring a backup image. Without a boot usb you can find it really hard to get out of the deep poo! Make a boot usb label it and store it safely away somewhere.

Laptops can be 1000% worse if they have trusted boot and a tpm module installed — I would not just recommend a boot usb for backups I would recommend it for every situation!

For the sort of situation you want to cover I use Cobian Backup – it is very light, versatile and does really good shadow copies. This is donation software, the original developer has moved on, but the guy running the download sitte deserves a few shekels.

Slight divert question for you Dave. Due to my heavy use of VMs I am close to the point of being mobo sata3 bus bound. Does adding a card to the pci express bus such as say a PCIeSSD or PCIe SSD adapter debottleneck mobo i/o?

Dan – we have been pretty much meaningless since the 1900s.. We got suckered into the First World War due to Edward VIIs craving for Parisian whores which gave rise to pressures for the stupid Entente Cordiale when it would have been much better for us to sit on the sidelines and make money from both sides. Instead we bled a generation white and left the country as a pauper, an act which inevitably led to the Second World War and the completion of our slide down the world ranking  scale propped up only by our meaningless possession of atomic weapons which are now effectively under US control!

We should have realized that we were fourth rank after Suez when the US and Russia ganged up on us and treated both the UK and the French as naughty boys playing at being neo-colonialists.

At least within Europe we were a country with a leading role in guiding one of the largest economies in the world – no wonder that the US has been using propaganda and sub-rosa tactics to sabotage the EU since the 90s.

I’ll admit that there were major EU irritants such as the misapplication of the Human Rights law, but this could have been fixed by giving UK citizens their own Bill of Rights. I’ll also admit that Merkel’s malign open door policy to terrorists was a disaster but this too could have been fixed given political will. Still such things are for the moment dead but hopefully may yet reemerge.

              I was joking about TB.

Just like the Monty Python sketches about the Spanish Inquisition, never mention TBLiar even in jest!?

The big difference between the various versions is the pin-out. This link sets out the differences. I had a hunt around for a better GPIO pin-out drawing as any one with half a brain would realize that there are multiple ways of taking a pin-out and applying it to the pi-zero board with all bar one being wrong! This article has the best diagrams and clearly shows the relationship of the 5 volt pins and the sd card!

The Pi Zero W is most like a Pi3 without the carp Broadcom sound system (no worries there you can always add a small i2s board that actually gives better sound if you add a half decent speaker).

For those who are not experienced at soldering (I know that does not apply to you), the biggest downside to the pi zero is the lack of a pre-built  gpio header. For such people I would recommend using a pi zero breakout board such as this. Although it does not get you out of soldering you will find it a lot easier to solder numerous wires to a breakout board (multiple connection points) rather than the more cramped pi zero board. (also easier to desolder when the inevitable mistakes are made!). There are hammer-in options for those averse to directly soldering to the pi but for some reason I find these even more scary!

I now personally prefer soldering connections directly to the pi as I find push-in header connections can be a bit wobbly.

The ‘gallant’ negotiators who failed was I think the preferred Fox/Davis strategy and they might just have got away with it had not May been too opportunistic. Now however too many will be looking at the negotiations seeking a softer  Brexit. If May et al screw around too much they risk losing a vote of confidence in the worst possible way that exposes major Conservative splits.

Corbyn now has the benefit of momentum, things now look like they are going his way, and gutless MPs will quickly jump on his bandwagon.

                    No anyone but TBLiar.

The one thing I actually like about Corbyn is that he appears to be that rare animal – an honest politician. Honest to the point that he appears not to care if it hurts him. May on the other hand has shown herself to have all the worst traits of a politician—  dictatorial, untrustworthy, poor judgement and tries to wriggle out of responsibility if given a half chance. I did not trust her an inch, and her ‘we will listen to you and expert advisers’ speech went down like a TBLiar lead balloon

Good job then that NS ended when it did. One lad I was at school with was short, fat, ginger and badly coordinated. He used to play lock forward in rugby – tried hard but was b-useless at everything except downing pints and pies.

Sounds like he may have had a hard time if he had had to do NS!

Unfortunately it looks like 12 months of nastiness for the UK.  Sterling is sure to take a big knock due to loss of confidence and uncertainty.

David Davis is not going to get the hard Brexit he so obviously wants as the opposition will gang up to frustrate the process of passing all the enabling legislation. The NHS will go into melt-down as there are now not enough EU nurses coming to the UK. Everything will go to hell in a handcart and the Conservative party will be damned if they go to the country and damned if they don’t. All Labour have to do is play a quiet statesman-like waiting game as it is very unlikely this Zombie Government will last the 21months until a hard Brexit is the only option.

The balance of economist viewpoints seems to favour the Labour tax&spend strategy as the best way of smoothing out this mess,. So provided Corbyn dumps an obviously sick Diane Abbbot. the next decade could well be a Socialist one.

I guess he was a little lax in his writing. What I think he implied was that there would not be an immediate customer impact though shareholders may not think the same way.

In reality the blog was a long series of complaints that Canadian Banks do not take on-line security seriously. From other comments he made I’d guess that many Canadian Banks are very vulnerable and so are their customers.

Nice example of what happens when you entrust your Crown Jewels and Security to a bunch of outsiders. A lot of Banks had all their digital jewels posted up on Github by a Tata employee!  I wonder what we would find if we looked for MoD stuff in the same place! El Reg has the details

I always wear a cheap watch for daily use and keep the good dress watch locked away. I recently cracked the glass on the el-cheapo and bought this watch – cheap as chips, comfortable but not a bad looker. The big numbers make the watch face easy to read. (the pic is an accurate portrayal of the watch face)

As a ‘smart watch’ it isn’t that smart, it is just a pedometer with Bluetooth, but the e-ink display makes it a battery sipper – I cannot verify the 30 days without a charge but I can believe it may be possible. The only downside to it is it does not have a backlight. Best watch I have purchased for a long time, but above all cheap without looking cheap.

Probably not one to give to your son as a present, unless you get him something else and throw it in as a make-weight. It does however make a great everyday watch for anyone not too careful about scratching watch faces, and makes a good stand-by ‘dress’ watch.

The problem is Dan that no-one who voted ‘leave’ really knew exactly what they were voting for, and still don’t.

As was always known we will be negotiating in effect with 27 countries all of whom have their own agenda and any single country has an absolute veto on a deal. Although you can expect the big seven to negotiate fairly rationally, I hate to think what the rest will do. If even one of the 27 votes against the final terms then a ‘hard’ Brexit is automatic. This process is most definitely not in the hands of the  UK Government, and I think the Conservatives are starting to realise that due to the youth vote a hard Brexit could keep them out of a majority Government for generations, and may be something they need to avoid. As Dave points out the youth are going to be around a lot longer than the old Pharts and Daily Wail readers who made up the majority of the pro Brexit camp..

I think whatever UK Government is in power in 12 months time, they had better start thinking about what could be negotiated in practical terms with the 27 EU members, and what face-saver could be put to the British people in yet another Referendum. Whatever it was that the Daily Wail wanted is not on the table they need to get real and start coming clean that 95% of the regulations they so irrationally complained about is in fact merely minimum manufacturing and safety specifications.

If we just want out of TBLiar’s Court of Human Misrights then that is doable, if we want to control the entry of EU citizens that too is doable. Suspension of the Schengen agreement is already allowed on a temporary basis and this was looked at being extended for two years by the EU in the case of Greece. Lots of back-to-back temporary suspensions with deals on those with approved jobs may be a way forward.

Remaining in the EU and getting face saving deals is still an  alternative that UK political parties should be starting to consider. Conservatives should also realise that a subtle shift in this respect would actually be less acceptable in Labour heartlands where more ignorant voters thought they would be able to kick out the existing immigrant population if they voted Brexit. (comment based on the many post-referendum TV interviews I saw)

Electric cars usually assist braking by turning the motor into a generator. It could be that the battery died and short circuited away all its braking effects. That would certainly cause the battery to go up too.
