Just simple security – never make it easy for others. Make it ‘hard’ for NSA/GCHQ. Do not hand them the info on a plate, make them get Court Orders.

You never know when Governments or the Grey Government will go ‘bad’. Both the UK and the US have done ‘bad things’ to their own populations in the past, and the future has the potential to be far worse.

…I was wondering if a ground level pump would help or would she just get this cavitation problem ?

Pump cavitation comes when the water pressure at the suction of the pump is too low. In simple terms this happens when the ‘mains’ pressure is very low (either because the suction is too high off the ground, or the pump is trying to ‘suck’ too much.)

In your mother’s circumstance mounting the pump at ground level gives no cavitation worries, however your real concern is water supply to the suction of the pump. A cold water header tank supplying the shower or flow limiters on the other users  would be better solutions.

Actually like all motors the starting current for the pump bit will be MUCH higher than the operating load. Typically 4 to 6 times the normal motor load, but you would need to get pump and heater ratings split out. Better to ask your electrician friend if in his experience you have a fat enough cable for that service.

Simple hydraulic engineering confirms your instinct. In your words if you try to suck out too much water it doesn’t work. In simple terms if you suck out at too high a rate the water will cavitate (water hammer). This is very bad for a pump and your connections. In an industrial situation, cavitation (low pressure voids) causes pump bearing failure. In a household situation it is the cause of a bad ‘ water hammer’ and will eventually cause compression joints to fail and water everywhere is the disasterous result.

I cannot translate your 10 Kw as I’m not sure if that number includes a heater, but if it just powers a pump then it is a socking big one! For reference, our pumped shower has a 4amp dual (hot+cold) Salamander and that gives a more than adequate flow rate (it is rated to supply two showers simultaneously) This pump is located close to the hot water tank (the closer the better to avoid hammer).

I do not know if this will do what you want, but it is an interesting use of Windows 10.

TextLocal DOES work (but costs) from a Raspberry Pi. so I see no reason why the corresponding Android app should not work too.

This is the tech blurb for the Pi in case you are interested. It also describes what TextLocal is (a commercial gateway)

Basically you did what I suggested for recovering from the over-current protector. A frequent issue as devices get onto the fringes of NEEDING usb3 power capabilities.

No need to be so touchy BL – reread my post.

I was not implying that Brexit voters were Nazi-like, I was just saying that freedom from foreign bureaucracy was a strong element of both the 1930s Germans portrayed in Heimat and the British politicians who pushed for Brexit.

Heimat in fact portrays all the ‘sorts’ of people you mention plus others including Jews and corrupt German industrialists. As it has received critical acclaim in Germany I would guess that the old generation found a lot in the series that resonated with them, but not necessarily either factual or unbiased:

When you show the 1930s as a golden age of prosperity and excitement in the German countryside, when you are shown the Germans as victims of the war, then you inevitably find yourself asking: But what about the other side? What about Auschwitz? Where is the director’s moral judgment? To which the color filters insistently reply: ‘Remember, remember, this is a film about what Germans remember. Some things they remember in full color. Some in sepia. Others they prefer to forget. Memory is selective. Memory is partial. Memory is amoral. – Heimat wiki”

I consider myself lucky to have a GP who keeps well up-to-date not only in the latest NHS medical sources but also those areas which I guess could be considered well researched but not necessarily accepted by the NHS into their stock advice. She said something along the lines that ‘many find sinus saline irrigation using Neti pots or similar devices help get rid of staph infection more quickly’.  A rare lady from what I gather.

I’d recommend watching Heimat (current series) on Sky Arts to get a feel for how typical Germans of the 1920s/30s saw their environment and to some extent why they reacted in the manner they did. I found it interesting (and some parallels with Brexit) that the average German wanted ‘freedom’ from the bureaucratic control of foreigners!

Circling back to the Welsh nationalist bit, the best translation for Heimat is probably Hwyl!

Under normal circumstances there is very little messy stuff – it is just a water spillage issue.

The scary bit comes when ‘you know who’ does cluster analysis on your tracks and compares it with ones in whom they have an interest and finds accidental significant matches.

Many years ago, almost in the days of quill pens, I used to travel Europe quite a lot and often in the company of a Cypriot guy. For some reason he had been put on a ‘watch list’, (probably because he shared a last name with a wanted terrorist.’) It used to make this guy’s life hell – every time he went through an Airport Immigration desk – he was often there for hours!

They did away with the ‘H’ for Horror rating for films many decades ago, but a film of the yellow-green-black smelly staph gunk pouring out of my left nostril would surely have made that grade!

Incidentally the extraction that caused all this has done in a hospital, and when I rang to ask if I should come in to see them, they quickly made the signs to ward off evil, and said keep the hell away from us – go and see your dentist or GP as we are MRSA free and want to stay that way!

Just one comment for Bob., In fact you do not have to tip your head very far back – just enough to pour water into a nostril, you do however have to tip it enough to one side to ensure it pours out of your nostril and not down your throat. I guess it could be done sitting in a chair or on a bed with a towel or something to catch the spillage.

Ditto BlueIris software  which I use on the Foscams. As each line cross can give a different interrupt it is extremely easy to program a simple tracking movement from zone to zone and so avoid a lot of vector calculations.

Suck it and see, but I do not see why not. The software copies more than one partition so it should handle most SD situations.

With motion detection you get out what you put in. You can eliminate a lot of false results by suitable choice of parameters e.g. number of changing pixels (this is a balance – lots means clouds, few means leaves or pigeons). Good software will also do vector analysis of detected objects.

As you will have a restricted approach you should be able to use a combination of masked areas and object size to eliminate a lot of false positives. That said, any camera does need regular housekeeping to delete things like postmen, yourself, large dogs and other objects.

I’ll still go back to my original comment – that a visible tracking camera is a great deterrent.

However no camera set up is fool proof (see cat burglar video). What you are trying to do is to persuade the intruder to choose somewhere else, which is why I believe very visible protection is important. e.g. visible camera, notices, tracking camera and  visible large padlock, plus a notice saying everything has been marked and registered with the police. IF you are one of the lucky few who still has a police station, go there and see what crime protection advice you can get.
