I think the Inquirer is also saying pretty much the same thing. When you have multiple systems sending data files/streams to a central database then a new interface will have to be written for each system/transaction type. From personal experience this can be a horribly messy job even when you are dealing with an uncomplicated set-up.(take for example the trivial case of two terminals updating orders for a single product item on a sales database – think deadlocks, rollbacks on failures, auditing, inventory control interfaces, live/dead data etc.). When you are trying to migrate old probably poorly documented systems and the introduction of completely new software then you can multiply all these problems and issues by a 1000%.
The root cause of problems is not the goal but the implementation scope and timescale. The scope itself can be deceptively large as it involves the replacement of working practices and systems that have been slowly built up since computers were first introduced to the enterprise. The project timescale is another huge issue. Management normally likes projects done within two years or less and wants the savings within six months! You need a very knowledgeable Board of Directors to get mega-projects such as this broken up into bite-sized chunks with little or no savings for many years during which time costs and disruption will be a daily fact of life.
Firefox 57 (Quantum) will be arriving in distro updates in the very near future.
The majority of modern phones now have Glonass working in tandem with GPS as this gives much more reliable coverage. As Galilao is designed for NW Europe the situation with the three systems working together should further improve both response and accuracy in otherwise challenging built up areas. Annoyingly most new phones with Qualcomm chips should already pick up all three, but not all OEMs have updated their firmware to handle this.
Fall Creator’s update alters some of the ‘personal’ settings that have been made. It ‘sort-off’ warns you about changes but the warning is easily missed or skipped over. Where the update makes changes it will apply new defaults unless these have otherwise been deselected. I suspect that this is what happened to your friend. Maybe he needs to check through the Defender options panels.
I’m going to start looking at phone deals from Monday (Black Friday deals start early). I’d really like a phone with Galilao+Glonass but other than a new iPhone (far too expensive) the only one I’ve found is this one.
Unfortunately unless Black Friday helps this too is a <$225 budget buster. Pity that WileyFox only has GPS+Glonass
As much as a Linux enthusiast that I am, thewhole Munich project was badly handled. Suddenly (comparitively) dumping everything familiar with so much that isn’t was always doomed to failure. The better option would have been to stick with Windows, whilst introducing cross platform OSS piecemeal. Once staff are familiar with the OSS versions rather than closed and costly, then then they could start thinking about the underlying OS. Since open source generally works the same across platforms, the learning curve would have been much narrower. All they’ve achieved is to tighten M$ grip on them.
I think that we are all singing from the same hymn-sheet, but your final comment is very apt. This has probably done a lot of damage to any CIO thinking of a strategic move towards desktop Linux. I’m sure that all M$ front-line support staff are now whispering ‘Beware of what happened in Munich’ to as many CFOs and CEOs as they can reach. The careers of some well-intentioned CIOs may well have been damaged as a result.
I must be missing something here. Every double glazed window I have seen you remove the trim that keeps the glass in place, make note of any packers/spacers then remove the sealed unit (glass) & replace – no need to remove the frame.
BLs problem is that he can reduce costs if he takes the whole unit to a glazier rather than calling the glazier in to fix it while it is in place. Personally I think I’d swallow the extra cost as any accidental distortion of the frame during all these moves risks future rain/snow leaks.
If it still irritates try following the procedures to turn off notifications.
Afraid I cannot test Windows Defender as I use Kaspersky.
Venison for me, but I have to be careful not to joke about it being reindeer!
Scared the crap out of me when I first saw it! Thought it was a red bug going up the screen until I saw it explode!
Please, please do not put bugs on the screen! I once had an LCD monitor infested with little thunderbugs that drove me mad Just when I thought I had killed them all someone put up a thunderbug bit of java that nearly made me cry out of frustration.
The one note of caution is that you need to check the temperature of your freezer. The USDA (normally paranoid on health) repeats the general assertions that have been made. However note that their indefinite storage comment is based on 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18C). If your freezer is at -10C then storage times are generally halved. Can be even worse if SWMBO is in the habit of regularly defrosting the freezer (may be time to buy a new one!).
PM if your hip problems are not long standing then you may want to do some research on the impact of gut bacteria. Recent research shows correlations (but as we all know correlation != causation!).
Oral bacteria has a big positive impact on gut bacteria so good dental hygiene with frequent use of a mouth wash may help. (research shows that this causes a positive benign change in gut bacteria). Pro-biotics are also known to have healthy effects. I would guess that none of these measures will actually improve your hip, but they may slow deterioration and they certainly cannot hurt!
John, if the fix gives more problems than it solves then re-enable the service.
i.e.
2. Here locate Shell Hardware Detection service and double click on it.
3. In General tab, under Startup type set it to
Enabled and start the service or reboot.Obviously to change a Service you need to be an Administrator or ‘run as’ as an Administrator
From my experience Win7 SD file ownership is treated by Win10 as being almost as alien as a Linux fat32 SD. I suspect you do not have to buy a new card reader, just be patient with Windows 10 and let it do its unnecessary ‘repair’ of the SD card. If this irritates you then you could try disabling this repair loop. link
I’m getting ready for Black Friday sales (Nov 24) and a new PAYG phone (sub £250). One essential for me is decent GPS (NOT GPS-A) as I find it useful to be able to get a ‘fix’ when hiking around in the deepest West Country/Wales areas where GPS-A is useless. (I’m normally using it to get a spot fix out in the country so that I can find the nearest place for liquid refreshments (and a pie)!)
The Moto G5 looks OKish, but I would prefer something that also includes GLONASS and especially the EU’s Galilao as the UK military sometimes arse-about with GPS near their facilities.
I normally use a GPS fix with OpenStreet Map (offline) as that mostly has good country pub locations already marked and I would hate to start walking away from the nearest pub.
Given the usage, speed to get a GPS fix does not have to be in the car navigation turn-by-turn mode.
Anyone have any recommendations?
What exactly was wrong with the old Harrier apart from not being super sonic ?
.
Not a lot. The US Marine Corps were still using AV8Bs (Harrier IIs) in operational service up until 2014. They were then forced to take them out of service to make space for the turkeys. They are however non-stealthy, which may be an issue in a tactical support role as it must make them easier to detect and decrease survivability.
My first issue with it is, it just looks plain boring. The fighting looks like Brain numbing repetitive tedium.
Certainly the melees are close to your criticism at the initial levels. However there is a large variety of weapons used by opponents given its weird mix of magic wielding barbarians, high-tech SciFi, flame-throwing monsters etc.
Had they paid more attention to play balance it could have been a far more interesting game.
‘However, how would a flock of drones provide air cover for the flotilla?’
Modern drones can not only carry anti-tank/anti-ship armament there is no reason why they could not instead be armed to carry homing torpedoes to hunt subs/trail sensors to pick up sub thermal emissions or magnetic anomaly detectors etc. With respect to flying any ‘top-cover’ I would have thought substituting an AARAM for a Hellfire would be a relatively trivial change for the arms industry. Equally drones could be fitted with early warning radar detectors. Instead of manned expensive jack of all-trades aircraft cheaper single purpose drones may well supply far more bang for our bucks.
The US are already flying off and landing drones on aircraft carriers. It would be much less expensive and more efficient for us to use container ships, escorted if you will by drone frigates.
As usual the MOD reprises the last war with the views of retired/out of touch Admirals , Air & Field Marshalls rather than a range of future scenarios. We need flexible responses not unthinking investment in cannon-fodder. I think in the very near future we will not need either a conventional Navy or an Air Force, however it will be quite a while before we can efficiently replace boots on the ground as there are too many problems in discriminating between civilians and opponents. I would therefore invest heavily in modernising the support for our Army in ‘little’ wars as Duke points out we are toast in any major confrontation with the Russians or Chinese even the NORKS could give us problems. We should reconfigure ourselves to a Swedish-style military as befits our second-string military status.
The tale goes from bad to terrible. Probably a quarter to a third of Lightnings will be grounded due to a lack of spares and the costs continue to rise. El Reg Link.
Wash my mouth out but we should have bought the French Rafale rival – its cheaper and it works! link
That said, I really think we should not have bought either, but invested in flocks of drones instead.
Just to add to Dave’s comment, Win10 is incredibly picky about sticks and cards and will often grot-out if it cannot read a card properly. This is especially the case when moving files from ‘alien’ i.e. Linux/Android PCs/Phones. It gets very confused with alien file ownerships. I normally ignore all Win10 warnings and just open the card – nine times out of ten it will read the card ok. (especially bad when backing up pi files!)
