“. If the Government were really concerned about security they would be banning all Androids/Apples etc with chips made in China. As we have seen from the malware Intel concealed in their microcode it is very worrying just exactly what a SoC contains.”

No the post was meant to be there as a follow-on from the comment alluding to the security risks associated with Chinese manufactured chips. SoCs as you probably know can be programmed to act like any other chip, and the Inmos  ‘Transputer’ chip was in effect the very first SoC. If it is another thread please delete it there!

I thought that Inmos (an eventual success sold down the river by Thatcher et seq.) had disappeared but bits of it still survive as wafer fab shops – there is still one in Newport. Hopefully Brexit and loss of development grants will not kill it, as we need the homegrown SoCs that Inmos pioneered now more than ever. (transputer = SoC)

I thought we had lost everything when Inmos was sold down the river but apparently a few bits of wafer fab shops survive. There is even one in Newport! I just hope it doesn’t get killed by Brexit, and loss of regional funding as the future security of the country could depend on places such as these.

Blame Churchill and SIS for our computing failures. SIS convinced Churchill that it was vital to do three things:

            a) Allow Enigma machines to ‘escape’ to other countries especially the USSR. (Third world countries were still using Enigma in the 80s)

            b) Totally conceal British successes in breaking Enigma et al.

            c) Most importantly Sigint was to be in the ultra-top secret class, and this has really only started to emerge from the shadows in the last ten years or so.

As a result not only was everyone sworn to life-time secrecy, but every bit of equipment associated with Bletchely was broken into little bits, and all Civil Servants etc discouraged from supporting fledgling computer projects. It was probably this deliberate disinterest that starved Ferranti of the funds it needed to push forward the projects that it had with the Government.

It did not totally succeed as even the Lyons Corner House tea-shop chain had the first(?) commercial IT set-up. In fact I learned to program on a LEO.

But unfortunately Churchill’s attitude pervaded the Civil Service. Were Bruce still around on the forum he could probably tell some stories about the way Top Civil Servants took pride in their ignorance of computers and technology.

They all share the blame for us moving from the heady days of Victorian technology leadership to our also ran status today.

As Steve says – this stinks of anti-Russian propaganda. If the Government were really concerned about security they would be banning all Androids/Apples etc with chips made in China. As we have seen from the malware Intel concealed in their microcode it is very worrying just exactly what a SoC contains.

I’ll stick with Kas, they are now more likely to start allowing the detection of NSA/GCHQ inspired malware.

Ooogru is a very cheap usable alternate to Sugru, but messy as hell. Needs a lot of experimentation to get the mix right and patience in cleaning hands and everything after!

As the man says in his step by step, make  sure the silicon glue is acetic acid based. (I use the transparent one from Wilco). One little American translation is required Corn flour = corn starch, and it is not necessary to use Gorilla products. If you use acrylic paints for colouring the setting times can be super-fast and make moulding difficult – caution in adding colour is needed to get right mix.

I had not thought of using warm water – I’ll try that next time, thanks for the tip.

One little tip from me try adding a tiny niobium magnet to anything you make with Sugru/Ooogru – great for giving you a handy place for steel pins/nails/screws (stick a patch on the back of a work glove etc.)

“You need to fill the survey to download above editions. One of the major concerns is that to download change my software from the official website, you need to fill the survey. The survey is very long and a tedious process and you will land nowhere.

John, I’m surprised you even bothered. Even the official site, as linked, warns you of problems! I only linked it to say that technically it can be done (there used to be a number of dual-boot pads for sale – none now as they are extremely limited by ram and incapable of windows upgrades.)

I hope you have not filled your pc with nasties as a result. Don’t just clean your hands – clean your pc too!.

Sugru may be of interest but you would need someone to help.

It is technically possible (link) but will run like a two legged dog – i.e. a miracle if it runs at all.

Why does it have to be a pad? A cheap 2nd hand windows laptop may be a much better route. IIRC the Windows Android software is proprietary and he will have to pay for this anyway.

I run Corel Draw on a Mac using the VMWare equivalent to Parallels. Parallels had a better reputation for speed and games but VMWare have now released a new version for the Mac. (Fusion – but I have not tried it, the old one is good enough for my ancient Mac Pro usage of Windows 7)

I have a dual boot Android/Windows 10 pad. It works OK for all the basics but Windows grabs most of the storage space i.e. a limited ability to add many Android apps. Not really a recommended route – interesting but somewhat impractical.

FS -generally speaking if you do not have kids, but have a biggish house without much garden then you will gain by moving to a meter. Once kids come along washing clothes and dishes eats water. As usual it is a tax on the young and poor.

The way they breed like rabbits concerns many, but supposedly only one fifth of the population actually want to abolish the monarchy – but watch that percent shoot up if the Clown Prince takes over.

I personally think they are irrelevant and can stay in place provided they are self funding and pay full death duties on everything including the stuff they have salted-away overseas.

The Dartmouth Arms pub in Dartmouth has been used for a lot of period British Navy stuff. Stills from the shooting of the Onedin line et al including a Carry On cover its walls. It is now a relatively quiet tourist pub that serves a fairly good selection of pub-grub. (wholesome, tasty but certainly not gourmet)

That said most films are shot in multiple locations so it would not surprise me to learn of three or four similar locations.

You forgot to mention journalling – probably the most important part of a post-DOS filing system. This helps protect the integrity of the file system if there is an unexpected crash by the operating system bang in the middle of finalizing a disk write. Linux has a similar file system design.(There are far more file systems lurking in the wild – see Wiki)

Because I do not have anything else, I persisted with Elex.

As may be gathered from the need to ‘persist’, the game is badly flawed with respect to early play balance and leveling. For the first 10 levels you are totally outmatched by nearly every monster and NPC that you meet. You therefore spend most of your time sneaking around or running like hell. It is also flawed in that not only are early weapons naff the character is made deliberately clumsy. All of which makes the first ten levels positively frustrating. After the tenth level things look up, the character stops bumbling around and can kill a few things. After the 15th level it starts to get interesting. It has its bugs but they are not (so far) killers.

On the positive side, the game is huge and the graphics are pretty good. I probably have a mid-level gaming box (early i7 and nVidia GTX970) but the game runs stutter free in a 4K window. While I complain about balance and game mechanics these are irritants rather than killer issues. The game itself has a lot of depth in terms of plot lines and has an immense plot structure which gets influenced by multiple decisions on your choice of action/strategy and alliances. The majority of many bugs and minor irritants flow from this complexity.

Bottom line this is quite a good game, but its many flaws in the early period of character development prevent it being a GOTY or  FallOut rival.
