        “Double yellow lines with enforcement”

Unfortunately these no longer seem to work since enforcement was taken away from the Police and handed over to District Councils.

If we are lucky our medium sized town gets one visit (for four hours) by the pair of Parking Enforcement Officers every two weeks during which time they are supposed to be enforcing No Parking/Double-yellows etc. over an area of approximately five square miles. The result is a complete flouting of any parking control as the fines*chances of getting caught sum does not come close to the savings through illegal parking. Only vehicle towing seems to work but there seems to be a dire shortage of such vehicles. As I have not even seen a beat policeman/PCSO in two years they cannot take any blame.

The nett result is that many will see vigilante-style equipment that automatically deters as being attractive despite the dangers that you have pointed out.

I sometimes see this ‘flickering’ with my broadband router->Netgear switch (as noted by Wasbit this is normally when BT is screwing around with their boxes). Just to make certain that the BB router is not trying to handshake with the Netgear I switch off the lot for 30secs.

The flickering is symptomatic of a failed handshake, but either of both ends could be involved in the failed handshake, so it is best to do a complete hard reset of everything. If you needed more than 30secs then that means your DHCP handshake between your PC and your BB router was also screwed up. (offing the BB router usually fixes this as well)

I would be very cautious about using the “Internet Repair Kit”. John obviously has not lost Internet. It is a Netgear router issue. Switch the Netgear and your Router off for 30 seconds, switch off your PC then switch back on.

The ‘flickering lights’ is symptomatic of the router/Netgear getting into a ‘deadly embrace’ somewhere/somehow. The hard reset route noted by Margarita nearly always cures it.

If you keep getting Shingles is it worth asking about getting the anti-shingle vaccination? It may cost you £100 if you are not an old phart. Link

Don’t get me wrong – there ARE competent Civil Servants who do excellent completed staff work. Unfortunately these people tend to be few in number and grossly overworked as a result of having to carry a lot of incompetent, lazy staffers, and their equally lazy managers.

County Council Highways Depts have decision making responsibility for all the areas about which you complain but most have suffered due to Government budget cuts – forcing into retirement those higher paid experienced staff who knew their jobs, and replacing them with cheaper inexperienced new hires. Quick ineffective fixes are the order of the day.

If you wonder why the roads seem to keep getting huge potholes in the same place, and far more than they ever did in the past, perhaps it is time to consider if the Highways Dept have any idea what they are doing. Just maybe it is because they are merely slinging in a quick temporary filler of tarmac instead of doing a proper job of cutting out and possibly installing sub-surface drainage. A criminal waste of money. (sorry I’ve ranted enough about Highways Depts).

Sounds good Richard – I hope all continues to go well.

Your comment on ‘a couple of biopsies’ reminds me of a mate of mine who many years ago had problems with his knee joints (no surprises really as he was a Sparks), what was a surprise was that the newly qualified GP then check-marked about every vaguely related biopsy in the GP how-to do-it manual including those for congenital syphilis. My mate came away from the hospital at the end of the battery of tests wishing that he had never complained!

Having worked most of my life in an open plan environment I cannot think of anything worse than trying to control a computer using voice. If I can, it soon gets switched off in preferences even on my phone. Yelling at a light or spy-machine like Alexa/Cortana in IoT is even worse imo..

                          Seek and ye shall find!

However at least the class action environment is sufficient to ensure relatively quick fixes.

“but the Town Planner must have been severely off his face”

Don’t blame your town planner, unfortunately such decisions are made by your County Highways Dept ‘Engineer’ who in my experience has obtained a BS(failed) in Highway Engineering from some obscure overseas uni and isn’t fit to shovel effluvium. However he/she has the requisite number of points in being disadvantaged in many ways and is above all cheap.

Unfortunately once he/she has tenure you have to write them a reference that says they can walk on water and hope some other LGA picks them up in order to get rid of them.  They cannot be sacked by any elected officials!

Sorry about the rant but you managed to hit one of my hot points – Local Government and Civil Service incompetence.

Agree with all the above, but he also had a strong sense of humour; in pleasant contrast to  Richard Dawkins who takes himself far too seriously.

It depends what you want Dave. If you are happy with non-standard you can do it cheap as chips link.

I guess unfortunately you tend to pay if you want certified equipment.

A minor addendum, at this time it does not appear that native 64bit support is included in the upgrade. i.e a 64bit chip but only running in 32bit mode.

Sorry but no. I gave up on Acronis as I found it was giving me too many VM shadow copy issues. It used to be OK until it went all ‘cloudy’.

PM they should be able to set up a ‘magic’ boot stick with uefi support fairly easily. AFAIK all recovery sticks for A/Vs or backup programs now seem to manage this painlessly.

I do however take your point on support there are some people who seem to have the gift of being able to break any system no matter how easy the supplier thinks that it is. I also agree that this is just a packaging of freebies. I tried to say that, but did not do it as succinctly as you.

Not a soap, but SWMBO and I are both fans of Scandinavian detective series e.g. The Bridge, Modus etc. They do however suffer from sub-title fatigue – thank heavens for the pause button.

When we want to see the way the French handle trouble-makers (old style rubber truncheon and or Glock) then Spiral takes a lot of beating as do the suspects. Guilty until proved innocent thats the way to do it!
