The biggest weakness of a Pi is the short life of the SD card, which can be dramatically shortened if the Pi is powered off without letting Linux go through its shut-down routines. If you are using a Pi on a 24/7 job such as PiHole then I strongly recommend that you consider dumping the vulnerable SD card and use a more robust storage device. This link gives a how-to. I use a metal cased usb stick and use superglue to add a cooling block as the stick gets surprisingly hot even when the Pi is apparently doing nothing .

If you cannot find a stick that works this link gives a slightly less robust alternate. (The SD card still does the Phase1 boot routine).

I think the ‘good enough’ factor is the major one holding back PC building/tuning etc. There is very like point busting a gut for a few more fps or flops as even games like Kingdom Come Deliverance do not have outrageous hardware requirements unless you have a full 4K screen and want a willy waving 100fps.

At the minimum level a 3-4 year old PC should still be able to play this hardware demanding game .link

Excluding 4K 60fps, even Far Cry 5 does not need a state of the art box. link

As said before if you want building challenges just move towards a Pi or Arduino. Lots of varied challenges at (almost) pocket money prices.

“… because as usual, the UK plays by the rules and other EU nations (especially France) do not.”

Very true Bob. Our stupid Civil Servants redraft EU regulations and tighten them up instead of keeping them loose. That I think has been a cause of a lot of discontent with the EU. As a small example, the EU Regs on fruit are such that it was always possible to legally buy and sell lower price ‘imperfect’ fruit in Germany, but the UK has only recently started to cotton on to such loopholes. This was meant to act as a hidden barrier to external competition, but instead was used by our Civil Servants as a stick to beat our own growers.

I hope you are not buying an annuity at this time, rates are stupidly low which means zero risk for the annuity company and maximum risk for you.

With respect to life span, it all depends where you live, some parts of the UK are positively unhealthy. Fried Mars Bars could account for Scots dying young, but I did not know the inhabitants of Pembrokeshire had a taste for that delight! The inhabitants of Kensington obviously live longer due to their healthy jogs around Hyde Park and proximity to Harley Street. link

This map is a little dated, but you can explore the more recent ONS data if you wish. link

I hope that you are right considering we do not actually know what will be the final results of these messy discussions.

All that has been tacitly agreed so far is the easy bit as the EU were always going to look to preserve their exports. I have heard nothing about the more important (to the UK) Finance & Services sectors. As usual the Devil is in the detail and the electorate never saw any details of what the small majority wanted to achieve and how they would be implemented through Brexit and those details are still missing.

It was the complete lack of such details and the costs of leaving that caused me to vote remain.

Given the need to complete negotiations, any talk of a second referendum would be stupid at this point, but there may come a time when we need to follow the Irish example and have a second referendum on what has been negotiated.

Just to kick a man when he is down (and who better than the InfoZucker). It now emerges that Facebook saved EVERYTHING that ever reached their platform including stuff you never published or even deleted!

                  Moral, never trust an InfoZucker.

[edit] btw I agree with Richard’s analysis. The alleged election manipulation was based on grouping people into herds, then throwing morsels at those herds who presumably were sitting on the election fence in an attempt to make some move towards the desired side.

As utilised It appears to be slightly less crude targetted ‘advertising’ but the ability to group individuals into specific herds and only messaging those individuals means that this can be done without necessarily alerting the opposition and rousing them to refute the presented ‘facts’,.

Don’t forget to get it out soon Lee. It is a lot easier (according to the GDPR Forum) to do it before the implementation date.

Lee you may want to check out the GDPR Forum. This looks to be a friendly place to get advice on a non-marketing forum.

Bob, your post almost makes me want to use my photo at 22 as my profile. I’d much rather imagine myself as that young Beatle-cut mod than the overweight wreck now sitting in front of a keyboard.

” I will be adding categories once I decide what they are or no doubt add to them as things are reviewed”

Sorry, I was not very clear. Imo it will be difficult/impossible to think of all the categories for accessories. A tag system has a little extra value in being more flexible but obviously needs more grunt in having synonyms in the tag field search i.e sound card=sound=audio!=music. A hierarchical file system is better but will take a lot of effort and have empty fields, it may be easier to put the onus on the taggers to use the best terms.

Games are easier – you can just pinch the record names from Gog’s database structure!

Via Hacker News, this Nieman Lab article gives an insight on how the alleged Trump/Facebook election influencing actually worked. For those too lazy/busy to read the lot it was the Netflix film rating system on steroids.

Give it a try, its an easy read and quite interesting what can be accomplished by a relatively simple technique, and a warning for the future.

Dan – do a Blender modelling tutorial and I’m your fan!

Lee – on the review front, we do not buy full-blown PCs/Laptops very often but we do buy accessories, phones and software/apps, games on a fairly regular basis and there isn’t an easy ‘one-size fits all’ way of organizing files.

To check whether something has already been reviewed will need a standard for tagging or something. Incidentally I guess that a forum user just uses the ‘search’ button for looking up tags or is there another way? e.g. PC Accessory, USB, Sound Card, Cheap – how would I use tags to find an entry?

Just to add, if you use the ‘Everything’ tab you will probably get a shock on just how much autostarts. My tip would be to use the ‘Options’ tab and eliminate Microsoft etc from your search, After this it is a question of methodically going through the list and look up unknown publisher/programs on the web.

PUPs normally hide in the browser profile or run on start-up. The other action is to check what programs are allowed to run on start-up. I recommend using Autoruns (from the SysInternals Suite) to check on the latter.

Richard, although my father was ‘Infantry’, he always reckoned that ‘Engineers’ were the cream of the crop for initiative and their Quartermasters could beg, borrow or steal nearly anything they wanted and fix the records accordingly.
