Better not tell him about SoftPerfect’s ramdisk then!

Stonkingly fast in action – but it takes time to load the disk during startup and obviously time to save it off at the end of day.  Free to try, but I’ll confess that I have not found the ‘normal’ application that really makes full use of it. Modern apps/games normally  use all the memory you throw at them, so it probably only has use for last gen apps and games.  The only use I could see for myself would be as a secure VM.

I guess it could also be a VM HoneyPot, sandpit or disposable browser.

The PC I use for security camera control is locked in to Windows 10 despite it having an i5 chip! I like the BlueIris camera software for Windows as it allows me to write my own PTZ tracking scripts, but I guess at sometime I am going to have to make a decision on the PC or look at the Linux options.

Have you looked at any Linux camera control programs which are ONVIF compatible or are you a bit locked in by your use of Hikvision?

Not sure what happened at the end of this post! What I was going to add was a comment on Cortana. I personally hate Cortana, so its loss was of no account to me at all, however if you are one of the few who used it then this guide may be for you.

Truly silent systems usually rely on transferring the heat from the cpu/gpu to a lump of metal which then radiates the heat from the case itself.  An external fan cools the case which assists the rate of transfer of heat from the cpu etc. You normally only get this sort of cooling on very small form-factor cases and you can tell how it works as the case will be metal and very warm in operation.

If it is a micro or mini case then an external fan unit may suit. The fan blades can be larger, and so slower which cuts noise down to almost silent. Normally the case sits on top of the fan unit which is then powered from a USB connection to the case,  so fitting is very simple.

Be careful of weeding out duplicate photos. I still have some scars of fifteen years ago when I did just that but unfortunately a number of the photos had corrupt headers (possibly from the copying or recompression process). I would now be inclined to look at the piles of duplicates and go through them before actually deleting anything.

As much as I think Dominic Cummings rivals BoJo for lack of moral fiber and honesty (re: Barnard Castle 2020), he is very intelligent and has a way with words.

His latest discovery of the (Esquimo) Inuit word Kunlangeta is perfect in the way it describes Boris:

Kunlangeta (which is pronounced koon-lan-getta) is a Yugtun word which means a person who lies, cheats, deceives and takes sexual advantage of women. The word was further defined as a person who knows what the right thing to do is but out of self-interest does not do it.

Murphy asked a Yupik elder what the group would typically do with a kunlangeta, and he replied: “Somebody would have pushed him off the ice when nobody else was looking.”

Good luck with the molnupirivir (Lageviro), although it is safe, the 2021 trials have shown it to be only 30% effective. These results were much lower than their initial claim of 50% effective, so much so that the French told Merck to go stick it and cancelled a $30 million order. I hope the UK got a discount as a result! Merck since claim that it is still a good treatment for mild Covid.

                      https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/molnupiravir-merck-antiviral-less-effective-new-analysis/

As you can see, all the tests were done against Covid Delta, so I guess they are now looking to see if it performs any better against Omicron.

p.s. as usual The Government is sparing with the truth (i.e. lying through their teeth!), as they quote the initial disproved 50% effectiveness claim.

I’d personally start with the easiest thing to fix.

Take out (or swap) ALL your USB kit. In particular remove a USB hub if you are using one. A faulty USB hub can totally stuff the boot sequence and im my experience USB kit is the most likely to cause a failure as it is often cheap and nasty. As you have a total power failure you can even remove the keyboard etc and just look for signs of life.

If that does not solve the problem there are plenty of simple steps to follow before you RMA the kit.

try this link, but omit all the bits which may spoil your warranty.

PS. Sorry for the late response.

I was busy yesterday setting up a PC for our 9 year old G’Son. It took three times as long as it should as I made the mistake of ‘locking it down’ before trying to install the full Educational plus Java plus Server editions of Minecraft.  I was also frustrated by the way the software protection then locked me out of useful reference sites such as ‘Instructables’. In retrospect it was a pretty stupid error as it left me struggling to subvert the lockdown far too frequently!

John, before you panic, check the silly things like the mains wiring connection. It could be something simple like the plug not being fully in the socket.

I’m sorry but I cannot see anything wrong with your ‘list order’. The files and folders are arranged in a-z Alpha order. If you click at the top in the first column that will change to z-a Alpha order. If you click at the top in the ‘Type’ column it will resort the files by document type e.g. CSVs grouped together then JSON, PDF etc, they tend to be in whatever alpha order you set. Of course you only get this option in ‘List View’. Clicking in the column toggles the column from high to low to high depending on the sort criteria.

This link details this much more clearly than I.

I guess I still do not know exactly what is your concern.

As Novak Djokovic ponders a possible three year ban on him getting a new Aussie Visa, he also faces getting ‘Covid Dick‘ if he ever gets a really bad case of Covid. Luckily it appears that vaccination avoids that issue as well

                                  wrt your password problem:

Sometimes it is your fault, but at other times the site changes what it thinks is required for a secure password and resets your old password. My original BBC password was very trivial as I could not see why it was needed, and the Beeb just reset it on me and then forced me into the 8+ mixed character set.

I now think rather than struggle I’d just do a password reset. e.g. link for BBC reset

You can usually change the folder view within the dialog box for the files being called up within the browser or email app. For example for this site, pretend to add an image to a post and then alter the file order at the top of the dialog box. I don’t think this reordering sticks but I’ve never tested it in that manner.

I read your posts twice, but struggled to really understand your issue, and maybe I have got the wrong end of the stick, so forgive me if my response is unhelpful!

JCD, I think that may well be the explanation, as the reports did not have the hallmark of hacking everyone’s master password. That said, a lot of the web speculation around it does perhaps point to ways in which focussed attacks on an individual’s master password MAY be possible. Comfortingly such attacks usually require pwning the actual PC so they will only be of real value for long term attacks on the individual by a Nation State or criminal enterprise.

All that said, the LastPass article had some useful general advice at the end. The only bit I thought needed a bit of explanation is their so-called ‘Dark Web’ monitoring. It struck me that this was just their fancy way of using https://haveibeenpwned.com/ , use of which does need a bit of tuition. For example I know that my email address has been previously  pwned a specific number of times due to failures by companies (such as Malwarebytes) not taking sufficient care to secure their databases. However each of these has emailed me concerning their failure, and I also know that I had used a throwaway password with them. HaveIbeenPwned shows that there have been no successful ‘paste-ins’ of these passwords – showing that there were actually unique. I’ll now only get very concerned if I learn that a new attack on a financially important company such as PayPal etc has leaked my current password!

I’ll get a bit concerned/annoyed if the number of companies leaking my email increases and I have not already  been informed by the company concerned. If that ever happens, I will be sending a zinger, complaining about them to the UK’s Information Commissioners Office!

Yep, Wales is going to be the yardstick against which BoJo can be judged. Early, moderate action versus head up his nether end. Unfair in a way, as BoJo has always lied, and ducked responsibility. Any decision was going to be hard, so it was very unfair for the vested interests of his Right Wing Pub and Entertainment industry backers to make things hard for him.

Unfortunately for him, the North is likely to pay the biggest price. Covid cases in the North lag the South by a couple of weeks, as a result the North will likely get a double whammy of Covid plus Winter Flu leading to a much greater death-rate while with luck the South will be seeing reductions in cases.

Just to compound things the Government seems to have no plans to compensate people for higher fuel and National Insurance. Coupled with the cuts to Universal Credit, real poverty and ill-health are likely outcomes even without Covid.

Methinks that these betrayals and the cuts to the HS2 will not be forgotten when the issues of ‘levelling up come around at the next by-election. Tactical voting will at last come into its own!

So pressures from the Right Wing of the Conservative party have sabotaged any moderate increase in restrictions. Real numbers now exceed 100,000/day, and based on S.Africa and European stats my prediction now is infections of 250,000+/day before the New Year, with 10000+/day hospital admissions early in the New Year and 200+ deaths/day before February 1st.

Moderate increases in restrictions such as table service and masks in pubs, and immediately closing NightClubs could have bought time for a greater number of vaccinations and time for these to kick in. As it is BoJo is going to carry the can for the swingeing lockdown he will need early in the New Year.  Stop-Start control is a sign of really bad Governance. The French may think Molnopirivir is ‘espece de merde’, unfortunately for us BoJo and his incompetent weak Ministers are in the same category.

According to the Beeb, France have cancelled Merck Molnupirivir because it is basically “espece de merde”.
