I would agree with Dave that the EU jas many faults, but it is perfectly clear that Bojo et al lied. Leaving the EU will cost us a fortune and there is no way that we will be able to get it back through trade deals that are better than those of the EU. The BS arguments about regulations are just that BS, you cannot trade in the world without conforming to the regulatory requirements of the importing country.
What exactly would we gain by junking EU regulations> GM foods — no thank you, I’ll first let the Yanks experiment on the long term impacts of pesticide modifications on their own population thank you!
I sincerely hope that we get the chance of a referendum on the outcome to the Brexit negotiations with the option to stay in the EU..
What is being delivered is not the easy painless deal that Bojo et al promised.
The Brexit promises were all upsides with no possible downsides any objections were dismissed out of hand. We would get all our contributions back, but enjoy trade with the EU. There would be no impact on Financial Services, and we would get full control of our borders to eliminate immigration (the Faragh poster view) and a positive boost to our economy with all the new markets in which we are going to cut much better deals than the EU. Plus of course the freedom to export without meeting foreign regulations.
The reality of course is totally different. Every single one of those promises will not be met. Even control of our borders is laughable if people can just wander across from Eire.
Looks like yet another Indian IT home goal!
I tried to resuscitate an EEPC but completely failed. Mine died because the early model I had included a 4GB SSD that had reached its write limit and slowly dealt out an increasing amount of corruption until it died.
Forget about the Empire and move on, we were kicked out 70 years ago and those days will never return.
For those interested in the full facts about the democratically appointed EU Commission they can be read here.
If you dislike some of the EU regulations, very few are directly translated into UK law as our own Civil Service has to demonstrate ‘value’. Unlike (say) the French we tighten up regulations and remove all the working latitude. The French tend to take the opposite tack and add more slack.
True, but destruction of the traditional retail sector costs a lot of unskilled jobs, equally having a derelict town centre is a recipe for all sorts of ills.
The whole sector needs Government Planning and encouraged investment but Brexit looks like killing any chances of that happening.
Japan has cut a trade deal with the EU and the trade deal with the US is nearing completion. I do not see what we will have to offer in comparison with that of the EU and we do not have enough qualified and experienced staff to negotiate such deals. We will be starting at zero, and negotiating as beggars rather than economic giants. The EU made all the agreements we cannot expect to pick up their exiting deals without negotiations.
As always the devil is in the detail. and I’m afraid as usual our politicians have the organisational skills of a Chris Greyling when it comes to detail.
I’ll bet that none have waded through the minutia of an export form and the associated business ramifications for either China or India, let alone the US. If they had, they would not be making their stock idiotic statements about technology coming to the rescue. (Both Sweden and Switzerland have been seeking a technology solution to EU import/exports and they state that they are still many years away from a solution and physical inspection/intervention remains mandatory.)
I hope we do look to the future as life under a Hard Brexit looks dire, and not what anyone will have voted to happen.
We were promised that negotiation with the EU would be easy, they need us more than we need them – huh. It totally failed to comprehend that the possible pain that would be inflicted on the EU would be far less than the pain we will suffer under GATT rules.
I’m afraid VFM that all this talk of trade omits the one major factor. You have to have a product that people want to buy. Germany has about four times the export trade to China that we do,
In 2016 Germany exported $1.25T, making it the 3rd largest exporter in the world, and I seem to remember that Germany is in the EU!
We would be a lot better off if the Rees Moggs of the Tory party invested in Britain instead of off-shore.
When I did a lot of travelling to god-forsaken countries the best passport to have was an Irish one as holders of this nationality rarely had airport problems unlike Brits and ex-colonies with chips on their shoulder.
All this Brexit carp makes me wonder if it is worthwhile looking at one grandfather who was born in Cork, but heaven knows how you get birth proof for someone who’s info was burned to bits in the Easter Uprising! I’d much rather have an EU passport than a British one.
I don’t know about carpet, but these work for pictures and remove very cleanly if required.
They work by sticking one pad to one surface and the other to the object to be fixed. They work by a velcro-type pad on each sticky.
They say for ‘smooth surfaces’ so I would permanently glue one side of the pad to the carpet using fabric glue or similar. The floor side would stick with no probs but still remove cleanly.
Dan if you have a Pi3B your method is probably faster than a simple SD card, as unless you opt for an expensive hi-speed card the 300 mb/st Ethernet is faster. link
That was ‘leverage’ in action. Market speculators only have to put down a fractional amount of their gamble, the rest only becoming due on settlement day. It was in this manner that people such as George Soros made their killing wheras the Tories led by John Major cost the country £37Billion by gambling the wealth of the country on not raising the Bank’s base rate from 10 to 15% in order not to lose the forthcoming election to TBLiar.
September 19, 2018 at 12:09 pm in reply to: What does anyone think of a Lenovo X200s notebook #26090Deleted – my previous response wasn’t relevant.
My wife has similar requirements and a similarly sized Lenono (a MX11), screen usage/keyboard are not an issue but with hindsight she would have been better off with a X200 as she still is not comfortable with a touch-screen only device.
Most people read what they want to see, rather than what is there.
Exchange rates are a complex subject, but mainly they are based on future performance expectations for the UK as quite a large percentage of exchange rate transactions will be forward cover for foreign currency purchases and sales.
In the absence of real support for a Hard Brexit traders think that Sterling is under-valued present. It all depends on the Political Conferences at the moment. Both Labour and Conservatives have the potential to swing the market in either direction. If Corbyn throws his hat in the ring for a second referendum it could result in a huge gain for Sterling, while an unlikely win for the BoJo/Mogg fundamentalists could cause a melt-down.
Graham, it does not matter whether the IMF are ‘right’. There are far too many different pundits saying that a Hard Brexit will be a disaster.
The numbers of voices matter as it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as far as financial markets are concerned, they will bet on a £1=1$ outcome with all the negatives on cost of living that will bring. Currency is 100% based on confidence – if the confidence is not there the pound in your pocket will not even buy a potato.
Even if long term a Hard Brexit by some miracle is good for the Fractured Kingdom of Britain, it will take years of penury to work our way out of the hole.
I think the ideal solution depends on your usage. The USB2 interface is restricted to around 35MB/s, but it is relatively simple to use this with equipment that will fully utilise this through direct connections (e.g.cheap ssd, or usb stick). Dan’s solution via the Pi3B 300MBS Ethernet is marginally faster. Both solutions are more robust than using an SD card.
I’ve opted for the directly connected SSD (no SD card) as I think the Pi Foundation will have to move to usb3 in its next incarnation in order to keep up with the Rock64. Dan’s solution is also robust as most competitors offer true gigabit Ethernet.
Sony have a YouTube on connections. link
Of absolutely no help to you, Samsung have a ‘one connect’ box (only power+signal to TV). I was a bit dubious about this being a gimmick but after SWMBO decided on redecoration and a couple of room layout changes it really simplifies life in making connections to a wall-mounted TV, as well as making it easy to add security cam, games console and feed from a small PC. Worth looking out for as a feature on any future wall-mounted TV purchases.
