The EU were going to scrap our rebate anyway to bring us closer into line with the STANDARD terms of membership. In 5 or 10 years time there is unlikely to be ANY country on special terms.

You were reading the wrong newspapers, read the Guardian for that period and you get a different slant from the Daily Wail etc..

No deal totally screws the average person for five years. On average it takes five years to cut a trade deal and it is naive to think that we can just pick up the EU’s deals. GATT means that nearly everything including food gets an average 5% tariff. Until you have a trade deal GATT does not allow you to pick and choose, and we have ZERO trade deals at the moment!.

The administrative queues at each port/airport would bring the country to a shuddering halt – why else are most companies stockpiling as much as they can? Many old pharts will die as they will be unable to get their meds.

The car industry would be dead in a very short time, and unemployment rife.

Not FUD just check around and refute it if you can!

You could try Philips troubleshooter, and check all monitor cable connections are tight. If these do not work then RTM asap.

Except all we get from the Brexiteers is wishful thinking. If you truly support Brexit then please explain just how and why the UK will be able to cut better trade deals than a bloc that currently has a larger GDP than the US.

As a simple example, we already know the trade deal the EU has with Japan, how will we better that?

If there is another referendum I would hope that each side has to present a manifesto setting out exactly the aims of the deal. I also hope each has to publish a detailed 5 year economic forecast.

The problem with Brexit mark I is that no-one including the Brexiteers really knew what it entailed. At least we now know that the EU has too much to lose by caving in to British demands and we also know that a Hard Brexit could well split off Scotland and Northern Ireland.

I can see why VFM keeps mentioning a European army Dave. It is a shining example of something the EU would Never, not ever, even in your dreams, think about proposing. And now has.

Macron totally out-Trumped trump by saying that Europe needed an army to ward off enemies including the USA.

Probably something that many think, but dare not say.

I blew up one of the school toilets with a large lump (25% of a boiling tube) of nitrogen triodide that I was attempting to dispose of down the pan. I never did own up how the pan got broken and turned purple. Still those were the days when they were still training us to be either cannon fodder or bomb-disposal erks in NS, so investigations were of a very limited nature!

[edit] the result was that I became a chemical engineer and probably paid back the lavatory many times over in taxes.

All the fun went out with Elf & Safety, coupled with Nanny state anti-firework legislation. Almost certainly as a result there are far fewer Chemistry graduates than used to be the case. (in the noughties about half the chemistry courses were shut down)

Correction Steve, on a percent of GDP we spend more than *anyone, we just spend it all on worthless things like the Flying, Turkey, HMS White Efflump and a nuclear deterrent that can only be of use as a Doomsday device. If we spent it more wisely we would have materiel better than either Italy (naval) or France (airforce, army).

                      European Rankings

The rankings are of course arguable, but second is the highest ranking and fifth the lowest.

*We just spend most of it on US tat, so the Yanks love us!

Assuming it is the latest W10, then my bet would be bad drivers, especially the graphics driver. The other possibility is ‘bad’ software, Java and Apple have both given me problems as a W10 beta tester, as have graphics drivers.

Some intelligent predictions can be made about the future:

May’s deal is legally risky and heaps that risk on top of very risky economic forecasts that we will be able to cut better trade deals than the EU and that miraculously our goods will become more saleable than they are at present. Heaping risk on risk leaves little room for optimistic forecasts.

On the other hand the EU’s legal team have stated that we can change our minds over Brexit.

Am I getting a feeling that you do not like the Windows Photo App Ed ? ??

I loathe it, but unfortunately there is no way of uninstalling it.

What I most dislike is that it uses a ‘greedy spposedly’ ‘background’ memory allocation and i/o stack that does not give way gracefully when I am starting up VMs.

The ‘C and C++’ crowd are generally less ‘pissy’ about addressing questions than the high and mighty Pythonistas on StackOverflow.

I suspect it is because there are so many logical and work-flow flaws with Python that the Pythonistas fell they need to defend it by reverting to unhelpful responses such as saying the subject is closed because something vaguely similar has been asked before (they rarely provide links to these mythical answers).

I only mentioned Godot as I have always found it easier to learn by doing, and visual output (as in games) soon reveals logical and coding flaws.

The problem with Cornwall is that despite them having very good parochial reasons for hating the Common Fishery Policy they are likely to get short-shift in any possible future discussions about Trade. Typically minor interests such as those of the Cornish get surrendered for the ‘greater good’. That is one reason why the German Länder federalised system has many advantages versus our own form of broken democracy.

Shifting questions is just a cheap politician’s ploy when faced with irrefutable evidence. I dislike it too, but it means the main point has got through and been accepted. Only third parties are misled by such cheap tricks.

However perhaps it would be better if the focus had been on all the lies and distortions told by BoJo et al, and the impact they will mainly have on their supporters. May is carrying on this tradition by saying ‘We will have control of our borders’. A total distortion given that the border between Eire and Ulster that will be completely open to all EU citizens.

Pity the Wiki did not cover the Reichsmark and the way Germany broke their inflationary spiral by declaring that each Mark was nominally backed by the land used for agriculture and business.   I still have a bundle of the inflated Marks somewhere – just a few billion or what was the price of a loaf of bread! A fascinating period of History that still accounts for many of today’s German attitudes.

Americans also hate Texans. There were a couple of Texan children at my younger son’s school in New England and they were given a MUCH harder time than the Limeys.

Richard we were both wrong on the composition of Jetex fuel:

“Jetex rocket engines were quite popular with model airplane, boat, and car builders through the early 1970s, at which point the fuel supplies began to disappear. Most Internet sources posit that Imperial Chemicals Industries (ICI) ceased making the fuel pellets due to a combination of liability and regulation issues. ICI, based in Scotland, manufactured the Jetex fuel pellets* from a measured blend of guanidine nitrate, 2,4-dinitroresorcinol, potassium nitrate (aka saltpeter), iron oxide, kaolin, and asbestos. Today, obtaining the required chemicals, or even doing an Internet search for them (as I just did), will probably get you a big red flag in the Department of Homeland Security’s database. There are probably a couple agents on the way to my house as I write this.”
