You may have missed my earlier post in which my local ConArtists are banking on a second referendum and are raving about ‘Vote remain and save democracy’.  Be good if we ever had a real democracy to save!

I guess IoM regs may be different from those of the mainland, here it is now more or less an automatic approval for most small additions assuming you can say ‘in accordance with *Building Regs’. However if it is visible from the road they need drawings to show the appearance to keep the Council Planners happy.

*Really a waste of paper as our District Council has only one over-worked surveyor to cover many thousands of projects – yet another example of the Conservative Government squeeze on essential services!

IF the problem is similar to that of the Intel chips then a wired mouse SHOULD solve it. I believe with Intel it was interference between the USB mouse signals and the Wi-Fi chip – certainly worth a try if you have a wired mouse handy.

Les, I do not know if you sorted this out, but I have recently updated the way I backup my system to minimise I/O thrashing. (VMs and Shadow copies do not play nicely together). As a result I was looking for some idiot simple software to do incremental backups on my Ubuntu/Mint home folders.

I tried ‘Back in Time‘ and it looks ideal in that it only does a back-up what you select – in my case /home/ed. It also allows remote locations or external drives to be used for the backup (vital to allow vms backups to go to a shared folder)0

I cannot specifically comment on Lenova laptops but Intel had issues between their Wifi and USB mice. The solution was to put the mouse USB mouse gizmo on a USB hub extension. Messy solution but it works. The idea being to get a bit of separation between the built-in wifi chip and the mouse gizmo.

Just to reassure John a little, there are two things to remember about distance selling.

                a) Provided THEY made the telephone contact with you, then you can happily just ignore them. Do NOT ring them back, as although the 15 day cooling off period applies they may make life miserable for you. I assume you just answered one of their irritating press button 9 type calls, so you should be OK. If not and you made first contact, then follow Richard’s advice.

                b) Once you fill in and sign forms then you probably have a contractual commitment, however you then get into a murky area of whether undischarged bankrupts can undertake contracts or are even allowed to do so, and I plead ignorance. I do not want to speculate in that area, I’ll just make a general comment that applies to anyone:  NEVER sign any bit of paper unless you know what you are doing!

Our nation is ruled by descendants of those who came over with William I: the Normans are still here.

Historically questionable I think. Most of  the people’s common land was grabbed in the Inclosure Acts (280,000 sq Kms) by Hanoverian descendants  who have very loose and questionable links with William 1.

The ConArtists, sorry Conservatives in this area seem to have given up and are campaigning for a Remain vote in the forthcoming second referendum. Jumping the gun a bit I think!

Their platform if you can call it that is that a second referendum is an affront to democracy, and that people should cast a vote for a Brexit (whatever that means) at the second referendum to ensure their first vote is not wasted.

Nothing about economics or the impacts of a hard Brexit, just pure emotional BS..

A phone call commits you to nothing under Distant Selling regs, however forms contractually commit you..

If you receive forms make sure you fully understand them (especially money payments). If unsure take them to your local CAB and ask them to advise.

Definitely vote for German-style Federalisation! That may move the UK a little bit towards being a democracy with local opinions counting for more than they do at present.

I suspect Steve had the old African colonies ion mind. I certainly agree with Bob’s point about Australia, NZ and Canada, aud S.E. Asia, there our manufactured goods are likely to get short shrift from local production or imports from US/China.

However, even to dream that there is any low hanging fruit for the UK is typical Brexit nativity in the extreme. All of these countries plus many more are already in the midst of EU trade negotiations.

Although I do not look back on the past with rose-tinted spectacles, there are two things about today’s British society that worry me.

                                a) The way the Nanny State attempts to shield people from all risk. IMO being exposed to  some risk is healthy, and necessary in a Darwinian way.

                                b) Most teenage males do naughty and stupid things. In the past this just received a clip around the ear and a damned good telling off from the local bobby, or parents (often both). Today’s teenagers are very likely to receive the full due process of the law (assuming there are ANY policemen in the town.). This can then either crush career aspirations or drive the teenager into learning to be a criminal.

Making and flying rockets seems like a great way of being exposed to measured risk, while learning the disciplines required to handle the risk.

I wanted to reply specifically to this earlier post. It is not a case of getting a better deal although often that would be possible. Rather its getting more deals, more quickly. The problem with the EU is that each member state has its own interests.

I’ll respond to the specific points you raise in reverse order:

                                  a) The problem with the EU is that each member state has its own interests.

This is precisely why the EU negotiations are carried out by the EU Commissioners. The member states have a right of veto on the whole package. It is then up to them whether on balance their interests are best served by a ‘grin and bear it’ on bits they do not like. My experience is that a good deal is one where both sides have to grin and bear it.

                                  b) I fail to see how we will be able to negotiate more quickly,

Oliver Letwing let the cat out of the bag by saying that the UK has NO trade negotiators, all would have to be poached from the EU. Poaching large numbers (150+) people is rarely a good strategy for getting the best and brightest. I’ll grant that in an optimum situation we would be able to put together a ‘wants list’ and ‘an ‘out of the question ‘ list faster than 27 EU states, but actual negotiations would be just as slow.

I have the biggest erge to try the flour/hover method on my garden shed. Not that there is anything wrong with the shed, it just sounds fun. Corn flours goes up well, had lots of fun with that as a kid. It burns like a gas ball, when thrown across a fire in a dispersed type of throw. (sort of like skimming a stone method). Icing sugar to, but that gets your sticky.

                                    Don’t!

Fuel-air explosions are bloody frightening, and the impacts difficult to judge. As you probably remember from your army days a relatively small amount of explosive does a lot of damage and kilo for kilo a fuel-air explosion in the extreme can do roughly twice as much damage. – re domestic gas explosions and MOABs

However, for heavens sake do not tell the ultra cautious politicians, as they will want to ban tins of custard powder and purchases of more than one ounce of flour!

Richard, luckily for me all my experiences are third hand, but one lesson I learned to ask by observation is: “What impact on remaining quality of life will this have?”

It can also be controlled by ‘Green’ settings.

Tbh as Dave says it is virtually unnoticeable unless you are ploughing through a huge database or doing some cutting edge rendering. The price of leccy has driven me to normally using ‘Green’ settings and only ramping up the CPU on the rare times I need to run three or more vms simultaneously.

Way back when, I also knew a school chum and we dabbled in such delights with things that went bang. I did not see him for a while and when I called round to find out what he was doing, his elder brother called me aside. It appears that he had been mixing a batch of one of his brews when he ground things a bit too hard. it caught fire in the bowl and expelled the burning mixture into his face.

One of my teachers did that, very nearly lost an eye but she had the proper safety gear on and a shard of beaker got stuck in her visor about 1mm from her eye. No visor and it would have been very messy.

Black powder always was and is a dangerous thing to make due to the sometimes multiple milling processes it needs to make it ‘flash’ rather than merely burn. Mind you, Sugar Refineries and Liquid Oxygen plants also disappear off the face of the earth at regular intervals. (If you do an image search there are more photos of these latter than there are photos of black powder mill explosions).
