W10 has some speed killing apps that hurt fresh installs. The major one is their nasty Windows Search which will trawl slowly through your hard disk(s) itemising everything (including inside files depending on settings). Windows Pictures then preforms a similar irritating ‘trick’. If you are not careful in your settings it will then go on to slowly doing the same for any network attached drives.
I’m not including the incessant updates when you first install it as there is no way of avoiding some of that.
Wrt other speed slow downs carefully examine your privacy settings and turn off all the things that phone home (such as the one that looks at everything you type).
Maybe others know an app that will do all this and pare down the carp in Universal Applications, unfortunately I have not come across one.
The Barron Knights were a tribute band I enjoyed watching in the 1970s. As they must all be older than Jagger I’d guess they are a bit creaky now – assuming they manage their final joust in Hunstanton.
At this time we do not know WHY the case was thrown out, however it obviously was not a vexatious claim as Bojo received no redress for his costs. i.e. a Scottish Law type decision.
BL, apparently the W10 Start Menu causes immense dissatisfaction among many users. Perhaps as a result MS have signalled that they will give users a chance to give input on their dislikes with it. link
I’m not sure it will do much good as they have totally ignored previous similar surveys, most of which said bring back the Win7 start menu with more customization options. I suspect that too many top brass had signed off on Win8/10 menus, and job preservation intervened!
Time to take the steps Dave gave earlier:
“After that it’s boot from a W10 USB stick and try repair or set Safe Mode for booting. When the Windows boot screen appears power off the PC. Do this three times so that on the 4th Windows boots in Advanced Startup”
The Labour win in Peterborough has demonstrated the difference between an EU election and a national election. It also shows that the EU referendum polling (61% voted leave) is also not a predicator.
Although Labour only narrowly won, they only narrowly won at the last General Election (almost exactly the same absolute majority). Turn-out was admittedly down but this is often the case in by-elections.
The big news of course was the annihilation of the Conservatives and UKIP.
FPTP once again demonstrated the failure of out democracy.
She was probably parroting a 4K number at 32fps. i.e multiply the resolution bits by around 4, and colour bits by another 4 (8 bpp versus 10 bpp) which would roughly bridge between her number and Dave’s.
The choice may not be allowed as the US is well-known for insisting that the market contains nothing that will discriminate against US agricultural products. Just check out the furore in Japan wrt US beef imports. In other words the products will not be allowed to be labelled with anything which could influence buyers to purchase non-US products.
US factory farm corn-fed yellow chicken will totally undercut domestic chicken farmers due to our much higher cost animal welfare standards (79% of the price of UK chickens). The chlorination bit is because salmonella is endemic in US factory chickens unlike the EU where measures (post Edwina Curry) were taken to eliminate any chickens with the disease. I could not care less about the chlorination process but I do care about why it is required. Say good-bye to soft-boiled eggs if you let in US eggs!
btw ignore any Adam Smith Institute comments – they are well known as the least transparent body wrt their sources of funding, and therefore cannot be trusted as an independent body.
After meeting Farage, Trump has rolled back his statement that the US would want a piece of the NHS. Believe that, you believe anything. Without the bargaining power of the EU the UK would be very weak in any US trade negotiations so the US can be counted on to foist their bright yellow salmonella laden chickens on us, as well as linking in to grabbing everything they could in the NHS.
Before TBLiar sold the world down the river to Bush I used to be pro-US. I now realise that I was extremely naive, and they are totally untrustworthy.
Avon (Paul Darrow) has just died and has gone to join the ranks of other sadly missed actors. link
Fair enough but Dave always recommends going for a ‘used’ laptop as laptops lose a huge amount of money in the first year. The only advantage I can see in a brand-new job is that it may give better battery life.
If your daughter is going to be the main user for a time ask her for her ‘wants’ list. Weight or screen size may be important drivers in her eyes. Windows 7 is obviously not an option unless the laptop is second-hand (nothing wrong with that on a vfm basis except no long-term update support).
I cannot answer your question as it stands, but a good earth connection is an important part of your home’s protection.
Normally electric cookers are on a stand-alone 30amp circuit, and I would not fiddle around with that as it is both illegal and will almost certainly void your house insurance.
Impedance would not normally enter into the question unless you have a cooker with an induction hob. It is hard to guess why your mains would have unacceptable impedance figures unless you have some very large electric motors in your system.(unlikely).
You can get away without a cooker in the short term (assuming you have a kettle) by buying an electric slow cooker or start down the road to full sous-vide cooking. (it results in amazing 5-star steaks!)
Bottom line I’d call in an electrician as the tale is too tangled and the downsides too high. It would not involve rewiring your kitchen, instead he would extend your circuit board to add a 30 amp circuit and run one wire from your board to a new cooker outlet.
“So you have confidence in the judiciary acting to dis-empower the establishment do you?”
This is one of the reasons that our legal and political systems are (more or less) separated.
Unfortunately without a written Constitution that is our last line of defence in protecting the public from political abuse. As there have been a number of cases where foreign Judges demonstrate such integrity I do not see why our Judges would not do the same. I would hope that our Judges similarly have the capability of acting dispassionately and putting the public interest ahead of that of politicians.
Except Trump and his ‘America First’ policy has come out in favour of no-deal and Farage.
Beware of any US foreign/trade policy it is totally untrustworthy!
‘Drain the swamp’ in this case is NOT about new laws but using existing laws to ensure standards of conduct are enforced by an impartial body. As we do not have a written constitution to protect us, we have to rely on the cumbersome process of legal precedence and that is what we need in bringing disreputable public officials to heel.
The general public needs to be protected from ‘fake news’ coming from authoritative sources, and we need meaningful standards of behaviour by those in public office.
If I accept that the CPS have the right to act in an ex-Judicial manner by ruling on the law (which seems to me to be stretching their powers), then I would argue that it makes it even more important to bring Bojo to trial to test what criteria should be met before allowing any future trial of such individuals. If necessary it should go to the Law Lords to rule on meaningful standards.
Repetition of a proven lie or half truth (i.e. gross and persistent) should be the criterion. If the potential offender is publicly interviewed, the lie/dissembling pointed out but the offender persists with their action then that would demonstrate an intention to deceive.
It should be fairly easy to extend this to those applying for public office through deceit.
