I was taken off Amlodipine because it cratered my normally low sodium levels and frightened the GP. If you stay on it ask for regular blood checks – extreme tiredness is one symptom of very low sodium, death is another!.

For me it was a real bummer to be taken off that drug as otherwise it was the best I’ve used.

I’ll admit that my comment on GP practices was ‘loose’. What has really impacted on the quality of service in this area was three or four excellent group partnerships being bought out by an American company and merged into one faceless and impersonal mega group practice that has policies  which require at least three weeks notice of being ill, and passing an Internet test before seeing a live person! Failure to be able to competently use a smart phone automatically puts you at the back of the queue.

With that off my chest, Richard’s information is good, and it is worthwhile if Lee found the location of such services and did a weekly check of BPs. BPs can go up and down like a yo-yo. If you are only checking weekly, do try and do it at roughly the same day/time, and make sure that you rest a bit before being tested. Don’t worry about a single result too much, the trend is often more important.

Some medication works well, others do not and can have nasty side effects. Its worth checking if yours suits you.  You should definitely read the scrap of paper that comes with your meds and check if you get any of the side effects. An irritating cough is a common side effect.

Glad to hear your news, and the fact that you had a medical. Thanks to the underhand privatization of GP practices and the Brexit caused lack of GPs it is now very difficult to get these necessary routine checks, and 220/120 is high enough to cause a lot of concern.

If you now get any chest pains, or a nagging left shoulder -> upper arm pain don’t shrug them off, dial 111 and they will probably tell you to dial 999 for an ambulance.  It pays to have a packet of 300mg aspirins in your house and a couple of aspirin in your wallet/pocket as the current NHS advice is to take one 300mg aspirin while you wait the three hours for the ambulance to turn up. 🙁

I was being lazy, I should have opened a newish Mint and figured out the easy way of updating the Mint kernel.

            a) Open the Update Manager

            b) Open the View tab (what a stupid tab to use!). Select Linux Kernels. If you have never done this before it will trigger all sorts of dire warnings of Doom such as your nadgers dropping off. Ignore this carp. and press OK (I think)

            c) A simple tab will open. Select 5.15 to get the latest stable Kernel with the missing security updates, and install it.

            d) I guess you could use the previous screen to remove old kernels, but I prefer to open a terminal and type

sudo apt autoremove, then OK and this will remove all the old kernels and associated cruff.

then just make sure you are ok by using

sudo apt autoclean, and sudo apt apdate, then reboot

After a while the Update Manager will update your kernel to a slightly more current version

Start doing some personal AI graphics research – it is amazing what sort of spec machine you can justify!

                Not yet!

I did a little personal research into the generative way that AI enhancement works.

                See thttps://github.com/adamian98/pulse

However, just think if a police force used only images from their criminal photo database to generate the AI. I’ll give you one guess what sort of person’s image will come out of a blurred photo/video!

It won’t be too long before they will include an AI chip that will analyse the picture and add such typical missing detail. The AI tech is already there to do it off-line, but on-line is not a real-time option for now.

I worry a little about how such future tech will be used as I can see that police/security forces would love to take blurry video and use it to finger a suspect. Even I would be very hard pressed to think of an alibi for some date/time/place last month, and most Juries/Barristers/Judges would not have the technical knowledge to even question the video and algorithms/datasets used.

I too bought it a few months ago when it was on offer, and also haven’t played it. Instead I got sucked into Horizon Zero Dawn which has that rare combo of eye-candy and decent storyline/gameplay. My only complaint at HZD is that a couple of levels require  three+ hours of continuous play with no saves, which imo is far too long for many players. You can however press ESC and pause the game while you go away and do something more productive.

I’m still only 70% through, but when I finish I’ll take your advice and give CyberPunk a go.

Déjà Dup should fit your needs.

I do however tend to agree with Dave that an offsite backup in addition to a local  backup may be your best option. However if you do want to keep things local I’d recommend using a large USB stick and only attach it during your backup day/hour.

I have been running W11 for some time now. However, other than perhaps security I saw no obvious benefits, and quite a few minor irritations due to the different Windows GUI.

GParted is scary but safe if used carefully. However, if you find using that  ‘nuclear’ option too daunting you could try the blast-from-the-past ‘Testdisk‘. Back in the days of people forever screwing up their Windows files (normally the registry had burped), Testdisk used to be a go-to for fixing things. Iirc Dave first pointed me in the direction of using Testdisk back in the old MM days.

However, when dealing with ‘lost’ files on a screwed-up disk, the number one lesson is write nothing to the disk, and do a full off-site backup first. I would use a Live Rescue CD/usb in order not to screw-up the master disk by installing it! Procedures are given here.

Pretty obvious, but that last suggestion has to have the correct partition selected, and you may well have to unmount it before attempting a rescue. From memory you right-click on the correct partition and select umount.

If the Trash can does not work, then provided nothing else has been written to the drive you can run GParted (preferably from a USB stick, and in the Devices section use the data recovery option.

It may well still be there but the gui has moved elsewhere. What is her OS? If Mint first try looking in the Trash can.

I guess Dave may have voiced something I was thinking. Although my mobo/system has in-built over-clocking capacity I never have to use it as it seems to manage it quite intelligently without me screwing it up. In fact normally the mobo just sits on the Econ/Green mode, and I only switch to Games mode for a full-on Gaming session. Tbh with my worn-out reflexes, it does not make a lot of difference if I forget and leave it in Econ mode!

Interesting. I never really understood why some manufacturers pushed the mild version, but I guess in days of lithium battery shortages it makes sense.

btw I could understand Toyota doing it, as they totally missed the move to EV technology and I guess they will have to buy their way in via one of the established EV companies similar to the Renault-Nissan tie-up. That particular partnership may have even more mileage in it as Renault are rumoured to be splitting off their EV business.

‘Living with Covid’ is now the Government’ strategy for the disease.  As a result the Government is slowly down-playing information about Covid, and despite the UK infection rate being quite high, ONS data will only be published once a week in future, and it would not surprise me to see that drop even further – maybe to area ‘poo’ testing data. (see recent news item with respect to the Polio outbreak in London).

The Government policy document is quite a long but an interesting read, and quite biased in places to give a positive spin on any mishandling that took place – read MD in Private Eye to get procurement and the bits swept under the carpet. It does not for example contrast UK mishandling via ‘Mushroom Matt’ with the honest straight-forward way it was handled in Sweden.

I could not complete my comments, but:

I also agree with your point about Russia gaining little from their actions. In fact irrespective of the EU, Russia has managed to unite NATO members, and has not achieved a compliant buffer state on its borders. In short a political and military disaster. It has however thrown Russia into China’s arms, and from a US standpoint it would now be best to now let a weakened Putin gain a little face rather than deepening and strengthening those ties.

Richard, I suspect that your thread has gone astray somewhere. My original post was not about the problems Austria, Hungary and to some extent Italy cause in the EU’s posture towards Russia, rather it was about a ‘SLAPP – type’ court case brought by Mr Banks against Ms Cadwalladr, which Mr Banks lost.  The burden of proof in such cases is much lower than that for criminal cases, but the Judge still has to give a judgement based on their view of all available evidence. The Judge in her summing up pulls together what appears to me to be a very reasoned rationale for her judgement.

I agree with your point that really hard evidence is lacking, but unfortunately that will always be the case when transactions are conducted through the veil of third-party off-shore entities. We would need a whistle-blower to release the sort of data that leaked in the Pandora Papers to be certain whether or not there are any hard facts supporting the view of either the Judge  or the Electoral Commission. Alternately we would need to see the Security Committee’s Russia report to have a better view of whether or not Russia has interfered in British politics. Until that day, I will continue to base my opinions on the old adages of: ‘follow the money, and/or who stands to gain and what did it cost them?
