Don’t know what went wrong but I was unable to EDIT my original post for the last sentence.

Right I have by now resolved the original issue with my Uncle’s PC – used the WD Diagnostic tools and the short test indicated ‘too many bad sectors’ – ran the extended test and all is now OK, back as it was – no bad sectors noted. Probably re-allocated them!! To get t0 this point I tried various things – not wishing to simply format the HDD and either re-load W7 and convert to W10 using the MC Tool – so remembering that I had a AOMEI backup copy of the original W7 install – I decided to try that initially – to reinstall W7 backup over W10. Checked the back up copy on another PC – it read the details on the external HDD OK. Ran AOMEI from the DVD on my Uncle’s PC and looked for the folder with the relevant b/up copies thereon – nothing! Couldn’t find the ext HDD! Hmmmm – re-connected the ext HDD to my PC – message “You need to format this drive before use” – tried several times – same message. Today re-installed the ‘repaired’ HDD back in my Uncle’s PC – works OK no problems – thought why not use a live Ubuntu CD to read the ext HDD or at least see what it could do? Got the live Ubuntu CD up and running on the desktop – saw both HDDs – tried to open the ‘C’ – no joy – double clicked on the desktop icon, left mouse click on the ‘C’ drive and ‘open’ – nothing, double clicked on it – nothing!! Can anyone give me an explanation for this – why can’t I open the ‘C’ drive (which I know works because it loads W10) in Ubuntu and what the h**l has happened to my ext HDD with all my backups on? I accept the ext HDD might just have failed – it wasn’t new when I started using it. Any suggestions, ideas would be a great way forward for me to understand what possibly I did or went wrong. Thanks, Dave

Just tried Ububtu again and got the message that it was unable to mount the drive.

In the early years of a mortgage you will be paying off the interest charges mainly, then as time passes you will start paying off more and more of the capital borrowed.  At least that what happened to us.

Thanks lads, have downloaded the MC Tool for installing W10 on another PC and saved it. If I now run that on my W7 PC will the tool allow me to create a bootable USB/DVD to use on the faulty machine – I don’t want to run it on mine and suddenly find I’ve got W10 on mine?

            Silly question perhaps – but better safe than ….. !! 😥  😥  😥

Just had an identical post from AOL – their new ‘sign in forum or something’ – yet access to it via AOL news was OK.  I was using FF.

CRB or Criminal Record Office also hold all convictions against any person so convicted – although they might be spent – they are still on record as the ‘owner’ has been convicted.  I am not certain if CRB checks actually disclose all convictions, current or spent.  Seems rather pointless if not.

As already said – if you ain’t been convicted yet, you ain’t been caught yet – CRB is worthless. So many sex offences against children is somewhere within the family confines in so many cases.

A friend of mine who is a current service police officer has also got to be CRB checked.

The problem with CRB checks is that if adding another activity with another different group is that they know that their CRB check is up to date – which is probably why it is needed.

That said, unless you’ve been discovered/convicted, CRB means nothing – it requires a conviction to be of use.

Something that is completely new to this forum as it was on MM – somebody going off topic!!! :yahoo:

Tbh I really like the layout of Forumite now that I might have got the hang of it – a bit uncertain initially but now I’m comfortable on it. Thanks Lee, I will be contributing and hope that more use Forumite.

Sorry for off topic – almost unheard of in the annuls of MM Forums.

I belive that after 2 years w/o insurance your NCD is lost but there is always a chance you can get a company to give you a discount on your past record – this will have to be a phone call as it’s not catered for in the electronic renewal system. It depends if you hit them on a good or a bad day but they might give you a 30% NCD.

The ‘black box’ imho is no use, my nephew in Sussex had one fitted – max 6K miles/year BUT that also includes anyone else who might be driving as well – so any additional mileage used by a 30+ driver counts as well. Extra mileage was about £100/1K miles. His basic on a 1300 Fiesta was around £1300+, a full no mileage limited annual premium would not have been a lot greater – and a damn sight cheaper than buying extra miles.

                                          Thanks D-Dan and DaveR.

My friend is a solicitor and needs his PC at home to be able to ‘speak with’ his office PC and also the office use ‘Office 365’ – I know precious little about W10 and even less of any Linux distro – so that option is out.

I have now been able to use Ninite on IE w/o any problems – big question now is how do I remove Edge from the toolbar and replace it with IE? More Googling I fear.  My first experience with W10 has been quite an eyeopener – the start menus and the tiles on the desktop are so different to what I have been used to – more akin to mobile / tablet systems – none of which I really like – where it probably works better, give me the old start menus every time.

No time and date are correct – I’ve done a bit of Googling and that was one of the first things that  came up. Will try some of the ideas here tomorrow.
