Thanks Dave, it might be worth considering if any one with nimble fingers can re-attach the ribbon cables.
They don’t want it back anyway – might be a project for a while.

Yes the laptop was handed to me by a friend – it was one of their business models – so data was far more important than a 3+ year old jobbie. Bought in PC World brand new and of course they didn’t bother with the ‘make a backup DVD of the OS etc’.
I 100% trust the owner and his company BUT after realising that there was precious little I could do with the HDD in situe, I took it out – as a business item – it’s tax deductible and after4 years – value = £0, but data was valuable.
Having got it out and played about with it I was eventually able to read off the data and recover some 60GB off of it. Thinks … lets try to install a new copy of W10 from Media Creator tool BUT no W10 or W7 licence sticker attached!! They didn’t know what the original OS was 7 or 10, Home, Prof or what so a bit stuck, MS were excellent I read out a few numbers on the PC but they were not licence numbers, having thought about it they said that if they gave me a case reference and I could obtain the original PC World receipt they could tell me the original OS. The guy at MS couldn’t have been more helpful.
TBH in getting the thing apart some of the interconnecting wires became damaged, but having been told “data, data data and sod the PC”, I wasn’t too worried, in fact I’ve been told to bin it already as the data has been recovered. Strange the lack of the MS sticker on it – no trace where it might have been or worn off either.

WofF – No W10 DVD to play about with, mouse worked if you call spinning blue circles continuously ‘working’, the ONLY control that I had of the PC was the ability to enter the BIOS and the Power switch.
Anyway have now got the data off the HDD and soon the laptop will be on its way to the tip. I won’t be shedding any tears for that little bu**er ever again!!

Lets all remember that these are ‘programmes for entertainment’ and nothing else really – accuracy is a vague requirement. The more you have been involved in ‘the real thing’ the more cringeworthy what you see on TV becomes.
But then if they depicted it as per real life, it would be soooooo b****y boring!!

Thanks StevieP – the problem is that I cannot access the laptop, I can get to the initial desktop and insert a password, then all it does is show a blue spinning circle (for hours).
Anyway have now taken it out and am trying to read it via Sharkoon on my PC after Kasp Rescue 10 told me it was safe – can take > 1hr to read the HDD and then if it see owt, it might not be able to open it! Still waiting at the moments to see if it will access the date so that I can remove the files and bin the rest.

Well having disabled the secure boot system I have been able to run K Rescue 10 disk which tells me there are no nasties on the HDD but loading Ubuntu again fails to show the HDD in the LH column – is it meant to?
I suspect a knackered HDD or certainly the bootable bits – time to open it up, remove and try and read the HDD to get the data off and then test it to see where that takes me!
Thank you all for the suggestions up to now, much appreciated. Diolch, Dave

Can anyone explain to me why it won’t boot from a Rescue Disk but will boot from a Linux disk with identical BIOS settings?
Just re-read WofF post – the secure boot is enabled on the l/top, should I try and disable it?

Thanks for the suggestion, if I can actually get to see the desktop, I can see icons etc and pretty certain that there is a recovery icon there BUT I can never ever get to the point where I get a pointed cursor. All I get is an incessant spinning blue circle – stymied!! This scenario has lasted over 3 hours at the last attempt!

Very interesting Dr Beaker – as some puppet used to say many years ago!!
Just tried to use the Kaspersky RD 10 in my PC – bios set to boot therefrom – nothing – it just boots into W7. The download was from Kaspersky’s own site.
Am now wondering if the KRD10 is faulty in some way or not burnt correctly. Looking at the Properties of the downloaded KRD10 it says that it ‘might have been blocked by a computer to protect my computer’ – I have ‘unblocked’ it in the Property options should I again try and burn it?

Sorted the FF Download arrow.
Have now downloaded K Rescue Disk 10 again and burnt to a CD, inserted in laptop and now all I get is the black splash screen “Acer – explore beyond limits” and a white dotted circle that spins slowly as if chasing its tail.
Just wondering if KRD10 has been downloaded or burnt correctly – might try using it in my PC to check.
Onwards and backwards!! ?

Just to add to my woes, the small download arrow has gone walkabouts from my FF toolbar (top RH side of screen) but L of logo that appears like a vert stack of books (View history, save bookmarks etc).
I have tried the ‘Open Menu’ and ‘Customise’ option as well as ‘Rest prev Session’ to no avail.
Any ideas on how to get it back please?

The one that really makes me cringe is the scenario that a very poor image can be so enhanced as to produce crisp, clear images sufficient to read the labels on them.
The one that really hurts is that in real life scenarios so many people seem to think that finding witnesses is exactly like the TV – if you can find one – chances are he/she doesn’t want to remember anything and most certainly will not go to court. Perhaps TVs should include a bit a reality occasionally – also a murder or several, has yet to be resolved in 55 minutes, 3 advert breaks included!! ?

The saga continues, have tried and failed the following: BIOS set for the correct boot option –
Bootable CDRom Kasp Rescue 10 – doesn’t see it – boots into W10 and stops.
Ditto with their USB option – BIOS shown ‘boot via USB HDD’ – goes into W10 boot up and stops.
Ubuntu 14 CD – will boot up!!
Have tried the sudo option and it sees the HDD but only as text written on the screen – don’t know a great deal about Linux to be honest – can see it is a NTFS partition but not a lot more.
Now booted into Windows – can see the ‘windows with sunlight coming through them’ – then it flashes off and on.
Is it time for the big ‘ammer?

After 30 years in the police and quite a few PMs, I have yet to see any pathologist or pathologists acting as they do. Do they ONLY have ONE case at a time? I enjoy the programme – but then remember IT IS entertainment and not fact. I used to love Judge John Deed and also Inspector George Gently – I have yet to come across a H. C. Judge who behaved like Deed or a DCI like Gently – several murders – no paperwork!!
Great viewing, very entertaining – don’t read owt into it – it’s not like the real world.
How many times on TV progs we see a police officer (normally DCI or above – making house to house enquiries???) where the witness always remembers seeing that blue car / van at location at time / date, saw 3 men, gives brilliantly accurate descriptions – hang on – just seen a squadron of pigs fly past my window ….. must investigate!!

Hi Dave, Thanks for the input – unfortunately when I see the W10 taskbar and the small square in the LH corner that you normally select what you want from, all I get is a spinning blue circle – that can last for 2+ hours. I can’t even use the ‘search’ box on the task bar – I get the blue circle.
I have removed the battery in the vain hope that would get rid of the ‘fast boot option’ by just clearing everything to default as I cannot access the re-start option at all.
Booted up main power w/o battery, Ubuntu in DVD drive – boots up etc but I cannot see that ‘C’ drive at all.

Hi Bob,
I suppose there are bits of you everywhere as well then!!
Glad to hear Part 1 of the good news. Keep yer chin up and to slightly off-quote you:

Thank you all, yes I did make the .exe file to be Administrator and got it going but it never ended loading – sp never worked.
I did have it installed on an old PC and the current loading of the disks mentions XP Compatibility so probably I’m stuffed.
It will be cheaper for her to get the ‘VCR > digital > onto media’ via a prof company than me investing in video capture software that I will probably never ever use again.
Thanks once again to you all for the help and advice.
