Haven’t had a chance to set it up yet – we hired a carpet cleaner for the weekend and still waiting for the office to dry now. Last one I set up was the DS418 for my old workplace for storing our modelling data on. That was setup using EXT4 and SHR from memory, though why I went for EXT4, I can’t remember but did use SHR, so that drives could be expanded at a later date.

This one I’ll be operating as two seperate disks I think – not after RAID 1, I’ll have backups elsewhere is the plan.

Once I’ve done the initial upload, expecting it to to be a while, but after that, should be fine I guess. Still undecided if I’ll use Synology Drive or if I’ll stick with my tried and tested Resilo Sync, considering that is easily installed.

I’ll have to look at the indexing, as my 116 seems to have stopped doing it automatically, I’ll manually have to run it for it to recognise new music in DS Audio or photos in Photostation – potentially due to Resilo adding them in I guess?

I am impressed with the offsite backup feature – I set one up a few years ago for my wife’s family after they were hit with ransomware. Set up Synology Sync (whatever the one prior to Drive was called) to sync to the NAS and then set the NAS to use mine as an offisite backup. Now, I just have hyper backup send to my 300GB of Synolgoy C2.

Do they still take JPG screenshots? That was something I never could get over on the 5 that I had.

They are good phones, and almost stock. Did like the one I had for a while – seem to remember selling it when I got the Pixel 3a, as camera on that was better.

Still rocking the iPhone as the main phone though

I’ll see how I get on with the Moments. When I tried it previously, I wasn’t to impressed, but I often used Photos on the Mac. However, I’ve not found an equal to Photos so far, so I installed Moments on my current NAS to try before hand but with the speed of indexing, I decided to wait.

I’ve got a 4GB SODIMM lying around from my HP upgrade, so I’ll put that in as the extra RAM and will be using BTRFS. I’m interested in trying the virtual machine or Docker support to get Pi Hole running, so that will come in handy and take a Pi off the network.

I considered the 218+ but the 220+ was £25 more, so it seemed silly not to get the newer one.

I did some tests last night and some reading – now I have a DS220+ heading my way. It’ll replace my DS116.

Influenced by the tests, the virtual machine manager and the fact that eBay is offering £1 listing this weekend so I can clear out some of the kit it’ll replace… I think also realising that I’d have to mess about with different apps to replace the Synology ones on my phone etc caused me to reconsider.

Spending £330 to avoid spending another £25 for iTunes Match :good:

In fairness, the Mac sale is funding the purchase. I’ve been far more productive on my Windows machine recently for work than I have using macOS   When I did my PhD, it was the complete other way round and I spent most of last year wanting a Mac for the office – now I’ve been using it full time during lockdown, I’ve found Windows to be better!

I had noted it was SSD in RAID 0, so I was wary of that. However, I wasn’t going to be using RAID at all, so perhaps it just makes sense to hang USB drives off the PC instead. However, see the Ryzen thread for removing drives from enclosures to free up plug sockets!

I don’t really want my modelling software writing data across the network whilst it’s working. Transferring at the end is fine, but ideally not during. Steam games as well won’t work nicely over the network (but at least those I can redownload again).

My PSU has been a bit flaky since the new build and graphics card, so I put the spinner in a USB2 caddy while I waited to get a new PSU. With a few small exceptions (running VMs for example), I’ve barely noticed the difference.

Funny you say that, I’ve just shucked a drive and installed in my gaming rig – not because of any speed issues using it via USB3, but because I wanted to free up a plug socket!

Replaced the 3TB in the PC with the 4TB that was in the external.

I’ve been thinking of upgrading my NUC to the Asus PN50. Looks like I could reuse almost all of the parts I’ve currently got in my NUC (the i3 8109U model). However, it isn’t like I need to upgrade! Was considering the 4500U model to last me for the next two to three years.

Well, it turns out we were all wrong – it’s wasps. 😥

Watched the buggers flying in and out today and this is the noise we can hear, which isn’t constant.

Will be calling the pest control tomorrow.

You will rarely see a Starling nest, they seem to like eves such as yours. Nice warm winter roosts!

Once upon a time I used to regularly climb 60ft ladders with no back rest. However those days are long gone, so I paid my window cleaner £15 to hammer in some replacement ventilation covers in my eves. If you have a friendly window cleaner getting him to stuff some wire mesh into the hole might be a low cost solution.

Our window cleaner is now strictly from the ground using the extendable poles. Next door likes to get up and paint his eaves every year, so I might ask if he’ll do ours and prevent access at the same time…

Looks like it might be birds…had another look last night after our online NCT course.

If you look at the two pictures, the eaves are flush along the house, until the corner, where it has raised up. No visible nest, but that’s prceisely where the noises are, so assume they’re getting in there or something.

I will put a trap in the attic as well to make sure, but looks like we’ll need to consider some outdoor work to repair. There goes the new carpet fund! 😥

We do have a light in the attic, so would be able to leave that on. Energy bill through the room though, as it’s a 60W incandescent 😉

I’ll get the camera out and have a look a bit later – good idea to use the zoom. Hadn’t thought of that one!

Only issue with a mirror is that this it the front of the house. And we can’t hear chirping or anything, it purely sounds like feet/crawling.

Thanks Ed. I’ve ordered some traps initially and will try and set them up. Annoyingly, the noises are emmanting from as close to the edge of the roof as possible which will make getting there hard, as the entire attic is not boarded.

I have also realised that there is a hole from the attic in to our airing cupboard from when we had the hot water tank removed in December, so I’ll have to get those boarded up, before whatever is up there decides to come downstairs!

Eaves did look OK, but might ask our next door neighbour if he can jump up his ladder and double check.

BBC is saying that it is 2750 tonnes of ammioum nitrate – link.

President Michel Aoun said 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been stored unsafely in a warehouse for six years.

Backs up the fertisilier comment made earlier.

Tianjin is thought to have been caused by firefighters at an adjacent fire mistakenly spraying water over calcium carbide containers.

Seem to recall a major fire in Bradford that this was the same case. – I was mistaken – that was AZDN.

I did see somewhere mention that nearby was a grain silo as well, and grain silo’s explode quite well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite that size though.

In regards to the BLEVE, they usually take quite a while to happen as you have to wait for the gas to boil and then the pressure to build to the point that the container explodes from the pressure. Not sure how long between the first and second explosions, as I’ve not looked in to it that much. I’d also expect multiple bangs if it was multiple LPG canisters, rather than that huge explosion.

However, that first fire could have ruptured them and then a huge explosion as they gas ignites – think Buncefield, as that was one of the largest peace time explosions in Europe.

Hey Drezha. The APN seems fine, I have been traveling around today and it has jumped around from G to 4G to LTE. 🙂

Also I think at one time it showed 4G LTE? Maybs

All’s sorted then by looks! :good:

I had a similar issue last year when we went to the US for our honeymoon. I’d taken my Moto G5 with me and used a Three SIM in it for the data usage abroad, but it turns out I couldn’t connect. So I ended up putting it in to my iPhone and had no issues at all and got 4G. Took me until about 4 days in to realise that mind (and I wasn’t going to be paying the cruise ship wifi prices!)

Is it getting the correct APN?

G seems slow from memory – you’d be wanting 3G or 4G to appear. Tesco APN settings are here. This seems to match my iPhone.

After noticing some disappointing network performance recently, I tested both again.

The powerline was averaging twice the speed of the upload and download, with consistently more stable speeds. Hoping that it makes a difference in next weeks Teams meetings!
