Gonna be building this into a kitchen cupboard, as a few extra fans will be needed . Shame it’s not next to the tortoise copbored, could of vented staright into it

We moved my desktop in to the bedroom for a bit, as we found that the added heat from running distributed computing overnight and the white noise of the fans helped Aoife sleep.

One thing to remember about SSD’s is that games R currently not optimised for them and so it does not matter how fast your SSD is. Games will load approximatley at the same speed wether or not your SSD is so called fast or slow. So on thast basis a 1TB cheapy sloey may be just what you want went it comes to game storage and let us not forget that a SSD will load a game at least x2 the speed of a HDD. Gay :yahoo:

Yeah, not a huge difference between SSD’s in loading games – but far better than a HDD according to this video!

Exception being Fallout 4, where load times are linked to framerate! There is a mod to improve this

That ADATA SSD is supposed to be fantastic value for money. I hope so, as I ordered the 512GB version at the weekend! :good:

That looks horrendous – in terms of condition at least. Scary if that is a nuclear submarine as you’d like to hope they are well maintained considering…

Yeah, it’s not a bad little device. I use mine as a remote desktop when I’m on the iPad or I need access to a Linux box and that works quite well – though VNC Viewer didn’t play nicely with iPad cursor support, unlike Jump Desktop.

Mine’s running headless in a wooden C4 Paramount 2 case.

I’d use the mini PC I bought from Ali-Express, but I’m concerned I can’t reformat the Windows on that and I’m wondering if any nasties were installed on it before it left the factory!

                M$ Photos does those

I didn’t realise MS Photos was an app – I’ve just opened it. I thought you were referring to the default program when you double click on an image.  I’ve opened this then for the first time ever!

It does do the timeline view and quite well. However, I can’t see a method to search by EXIF data or to save the search. However, with Digikam and Photos, then I should be set!

Google Photos displays the images like I’d like – in a long continuous timeline, regardless of the folder they’re in. However, it doesn’t do saved searches (i.e. show me all photos taken by iPhone.)

Irfanview seemed to only show me in each folder – which I can do by browsing to the folder in Explorer and view via Large Icons.

Digikam does this – see below images for what I’m after and how I’ve set it up:

I can perform a search and then save the results and come back to it at a later date.

Here I’ve got the photos arranged in a timeline across a range of different folders.

I can also view the images on a map, which I don’t think Google Photos does.

I got the Pro through work as well for work – it was good but when lockdown happened, it shows it’s limitations and I’ve had to go back to Windows as a primary machine. Couldn’t use just iPadOS and I like Apple!

However, I tend to reach for my Surface rather than my iPad Pro, and if I’m using a pad, I’ll often use my personal iPad Mini 5 instead, as I find the form factor and weight better. Havn’t used my Kindle since I got the Mini!

Thanks for the idea – I didn’t know Irfanview could do that, as I’ve already got it installed. However, it’s still not quite what I’m after, as that only shows items within the folder, similar to XNView that I’ve tried.

Shotwell would be the Linux equal to what I’m looking for. I’m downloading Digikam to try – I didn’t realise it had a Windows client.

Though I did note that Picasa runs still at the weekend, and I think I found how to search EXIF data.

Get yourself a powered USB-C Hub. It SUOULD Pass through all USB functions but given the complexity of the Standard, Who knows ? –

It also depends on if the iPad accepts it.

I know it works with Ethernet, display and USB storage.

The 10th gen Intel chips are fairly good, if my Surface is anything to go by. My i5-1035G4 in the Surface handles itself well, being reasonably comparable to my Ryzen 5 4600H in my modelling benchmarks.

                            I like Tom Scott’s video on VPN’s – Youtube.

In short, HTTPS should cover you in general. Getting around geoblocking is probably the main use.

I have one setup on my NAS, purely to access my home network from outside. I do use it when outside the house on a free wifi.

I like it and I’m disappointed that Apple haven’t adopted it for the iPhones – doesn’t really make sense, now that the iPad Pro’s are on USB-C and the MacBooks are all on USB-C.

BTW – the Surface Pro 7 will also charge via USB-C, as well as the Surface port. You just need to make sure that the USB charger outputs sufficient power.

I think that’s my only concern with it, is that Joe Soap (like my mum) wouldn’t realise that different chargers output different amounts of power and just consider that a USB-C charger should charge everything.

Dave’s hit the nail on the head – it’s more for the archiving than day to day use.

I’ve switched from Fastmail to my Mythic Beasts hosting today – mails switched via Thunderbird today. I over estimated my storage, as I’m using 1023.98 MB / 5.00 GB of my Mythic Beasts storage now, so I’ve got some headroom and if needed, I can auto archive some emails to local folders and get them off the server. Backups of the Maildir/Mbox on to the Synology will be the way forward – versioned via Hyper Backup, this will allow me to go back if needed.

Interestingly, Roundcube and the MB servers are far quicker than when I used iCloud and iCloud sync on my iOS devices! So I’ll have saved myself some money by looks by getting rid of Fastmail at renewal.

Thanks Drezha – probably this explains why I have never seen maildir! link

It seems that Thunderbird doesn’t support Maildir out of the box – link. However, I recall when I upgraded to Version 6 of Postbox, they switched it to Maildir – IO couldn’t see it on their site, but a Google brought this up.

Not sure if it’s more stable now – that was a few years ago.

So how goes uni in these covid times r u getting vfm.

My wages are getting paid by the students, so I guess I’m getting value for money! I feel sorry for them, but the wages still need to be paid – the Uni has made voluntary redundacies and they’re now regretting it in some locations I think, but in general, wages still need to be paid.

Impressive looking paint job on the bike there! We went with the wife Irish heritage, though if it was a boy, we couldn’t settle on an Irish name, so good job it was a girl!

OK, looking at this the Mailplus server can’t do it, it’s the role of the mail client, so the Synology is out. There are posts out there using Fetchmail to feed Mailplus. They look convoluted. I’d stick with using an email client.

That seems the least painful option as least error prone :good:

I’m all sorted on the accounts and transfers thanks – I’ve transferred between iCloud and Fastmail often enough to in the past 6 months whilst debating if I was going to pay for another year!

What I was after was like the fetch email feature in Gmail – this downloads emails from other accounts in to Gmail and then all accessing is done via Gmail. However, I wanted this to be on my NAS if possible. Using Gmail may be an option still, as you can also do send as in Gmail as well.

Speaking of the i5 10th Gen (which Dave did 😃), its Amazon deal day today so I ordered a Surface Pro 7 for £659. Core i5 1035G4, 8GB DDR4, 128 GB SSD. I ordered the type cover as well and it should arrive on tuesday next week. I really brought it to compile my C++ programming efforts quickly but it looks like the iris plus graphics arn’t too bad either.

I should have waited, as I got the 256GB version a few weeks before at a larger price, even with University discount 😟

Talking about heating, we’ve moved my desktop in to the bedroom(!) as I have it running distributed computing projects – we found last night that it takes the edge of the chill within the room whilst we’re feeding Aoife overnight! Putting that heat to good use whilst helping science. The white noise also helps her to sleep, though it’s not a very loud machine. (Ryzen 1600) :good:

After some Googling and investigation, it seems that Dovecot can do what I need but it appears that the easiest solution is just to use Thunderbird (or email client of choice) to access.

For personal emails, I was just looking at keeping it on the host – I’ve already got a Fastmail account, but that essentially just aggregates my iCloud and Gmail emails. And I’m looking at moving away from iCloud, as it has hidden filtering, which has prevented me getting mail on a couple of occasions. That’s the one that has a reasonable email handle as well (I.e. doesn’t involve Drezha, which perhaps doesn’t look so good on non personal emails!)

Thunderbird is good, but I think I’ve a lifetime key for Postbox which is based on Thunderbird. Of course, I’ve also got access to Outlook.

@EdP – Thunderbird now uses Maildir doesn’t it? sure it used to use Mbox.
