I picked that one up as well RSB – took out a sub to it as well (£14 for three months is a lot more stomachable than £7 a pop)

You haven’t mentioned whether the GF is happy to move to Manchester,……………… or are you really setting up for a change??  You could always, with best advice from professionals, rent out current house, mortgage company permitting, and that could easily pay to rent in Manchester plus change to spare!! Or pay some more off your current mortgage ( again, with best advice).

She want’s me to get the job and move to Manchester so she can quit her job! Not really an attitude that’s particularly healthy perhaps but that’s her stance currently. Renting is possible on the mnortgage – it adds on 1% to my interest rates but it could suffice for the short term.

Yeah, I’m just trying to get some advice before making a potentially huge decision!

Military is out completely – medical verdict was permanently medically unfit so no chance of changing that and speaking to the doctor, my ability to appeal isn’t great due to one of the medical conditions they’re saying is stopping me. Military life isn’t quite ruled out 100% though, as I’m booked on to Officer and Aircrew Selection for the RAFVR(T) in February and I’m involved in the ACO for the past two years since I left when I turned 18. The best time of the week is cadet nights(!)

Having done a degree before, I know what I’m looking for now (accreditation with institutes, employment opportunities afterwards etc)

Current employer (or at least my boss) does not really have a decent plan for marketing, training or anything else like that and is focused on creating framework agreements with big name clients. All well and good but it’s at the expense of repeat work from smaller companies. It feels very public sector still and it’s not a firm that I’m really enjoying. The fire team within the business forms a very small function in comparison to the rest of the firm and it shows.

The interview I’ve got in Manchester next week has come about from seeing it advertised. I’m in a niche profession that if I’m looking at moving, I could probably approach the bigger names without a headhunter, saving them the fees. It’s a question though of if I could port my mortgage to somewhere in Manchester and finding someplace to live up there.

It’s trying to find something I’ll enjoy doing!

Well the hobby as a job thing was something that I considered when I went to uni the first time round – computers were a hobby but I decided I didn’t want to risk it back then but looking back, everything has kept swinging back to computers really – I’ve published articles on fire modelling using cloud computer for example and one of the areas I’m specialised in is computational modelling.

I was looking at the Royal Holloway course – seems more focused on the InfoSec side than pure Cyber Security. I was also looking at Plymouth University – it’s closer to home and it’s accredited by BCS and the IISP (who I joined at the start of the year, and looking at attending some networking/CPD events).

It looks like I can get a Career Development Loan (but not a Student Loan, as I have a PhD already and that precludes me from getting a loan for a masters).

Biggest risk I’ve got of losing is my house as I only got on the housing ladder three years ago! I’d still need a job to pay my way through the degree, even if the loan covered the costs of the fees.

I’ve collected items from Argos before – I think you can just send it to an Argos as well but I’m not 100% sure of that as none of the items I’ve recently sold have had to go that way.

I’ve never bothered with eBay’s postal system – I either stuck with the local post office just up the road or used Hermes as I could drop that off at a shop that was open (and when I worked at London, I didn’t have to deal with the god awful staff in the Kings Cross post office who would consistently upsell you – occasionally “mishearing” you and trying to send it special delivery… ಠ_ಠ)

I bought one of these in December and I’ve been very unimpressed. Wanted to replace my Hope 1, which is good, but I’ve misplaced the bits to change it to the larger handlebars of the touring and cyclocross bikes I have. The battery life is a fraction of what it states – I’ve got to take it to Evans tomorrow to see if I can get a refund for it (who will have to send it back to Lezyne to see whether it is broken).
Tempted to get myself an Alpkit Boson but thinking it might be best to wait until I find the outcome of the return.

Would it work if the list was in Google Drive and just copied and pasted in?

You could also link to the GDrive sheet as well.

That’s a good idea @drezha , I’ll have to look into that. I’ve not quote got the hang of embedding here yet, so some research (cough trail and error) needed.

                    Testing embed

                    <iframe src=”https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hEWtuGTHqLSNsO_Y2DOBvqsayoo6sqtTiJd6X15tXGQ/pubhtml?widget=true&amp;headers=false”></iframe&gt;

Might not allow iFrames I guess

I just spent about 15mins updating the table for the site to crash on reload. I’ll do it again later :negative:

Do it in a Google Spreadsheet and see if you can embed it?

Hum. I put it in source and then clicked the Embed tab to see what that did and then went back to the General tab.

It showed in the preview that it was posting correctly before I pressed Post though.

                        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All you have to do, copy the youtube address and paste into the source in the video option.

That’s what I did and after posting the video, the page just showed the embed code, not the video itself. Now I’ve visited the page again, it works properly.

EdP – Would a a Pi-Hole free up any cycles on the Windows 10 box? The Pi blocks a huge number of Windows phone home DNS requests (though that might make things worse? Constant looking for a connection)

Well, my last few purchases have been of the lower powered Intel chips and I’ve not been to impressed. The last desktop I purchased was one using an A10 AMD CPU and that’s my gaming rig – it plays what I need it to play (current game is Factario, which in fairness, is likely to play on something much older!) I’m not planning on updating it this year (though might update the graphics card as at the minute, I’m using the onboard graphics, though as I’m now longer playing Payday or any of the latest releases, that isn’t to much of an issue).

My X220 is about to become my main rig again though – I can tell the difference between that and my low powered Celeron box. But that’s probably a first gen i5 and I can’t tell the difference using a later gen i5 at work. Or I think I can but I believe that’s an SSD thing (i.e. I don’t have one at work and 4GB of RAM is killing the machine!)

I’m trying to use Windows less at home but I’m required to boot up the Windows machine for actual work (i.e. my day job) as we use Office 365 and I can log on and use Office and Outlook.

I was missing apps like Breevy but I’ve sorted that now on Linux with some command line scripting. I’ll miss Doxie as well, as that was simple and straightforward for my scanning needs. However, I can still use the Doxie, I’ll just get JPG files by default which I’m sure I could then pass through some Linux commands to get OCR’d copies. Switching to the Doxie Q could be on the books though and that would make it easier (it would all go to my iPhone instead and could then be moved over).

Gaming would still be on the Windows box, but then I have a separate Linux box which is lower powered than the Windows rig, so I wouldn’t really want to play games on it just yet.

From my Mac days, I miss 1Password (it’s just much nicer on iOS than to use a Keepass file) and nValt/Ulysses – I can’t seem to find a writing app on Linux like these two apps, especially Ulysses which is a real shame.
