For Glacier – I’ve used it’s companion software before (S3 Browser) but Fastglacier might be worthwhile. Likewise, I believe Arq Backup works with Galcier (I didn’t use it – I was using it to backup to Google Drive).

If he needs a hand with the process, let me know having just gone through it all for the RAF (other than OASC… though I have that to come in May now, though that’s for a Cadet Forces Commission rather than the Regulars commission that I wanted and because on 1st April they change the RAFVR(T) to the CFC commission!)

Not sure if he’ll have to do CBAT as well at Cranwell. That’s tough, but not a bad day once you settle into it. Medical officer might be very different though as it’s not one that’s on the CBAT list to pass out from.

When I went the first time round (2004), they suggested I go to Uni, so I did. Then 2008 they wouldn’t take me (cos they were cutting down from 50,000 to 35,000 personnel) and I didn’t have the right degree. I actually gave it all I had this time round and was well prepared. Did my P2 presentation, did CBAT at Cranwell which I passed quite well at, aced my interview at the London AFCO and then got let down on medical grounds after my medical. I could potentially appeal the decision but I think one of the reasons they failed me, I’d have a really hard time proving I’m fine (my back – they could come to the gym and see me deadlifting and that should solve that issue!). Next step would have been Officer and Aircrew Selection Course. But alas.

So now it’s off to Manchester (with a trip to OASC the two days before I start my new job! )

Half a dozen debian based linux tablets as apache servers instead of a pile of dell headles base pc’s I currently have would be ideal.

Or buy one Xeon server and virtualise the lot? 😉

Yeah, been in the same boat. Sold my car and gave up driving when I was doing my PhD and then moved to London. Gap of four years and I started again last year – no more no claims bonus now.

However, the £350 was a lot more palatable than when I started, which was £1300 for my Ford Fiesta!

you can also just run https://www.messenger.com/ in its own browser tab. There are Chrome apps too, I think they more or less just do the browser thing anyway, but let you pop out a messenger-only window.

                Now I feel like a fool ?

That’s handy – I use Messanger a bit and that would prove helpful as I can’t stand that the facebook site makes you use a small window in the bottom of the window whilst browsing ಠ_ಠ

I could get your browser, os , location etc…. Maybe later though, I’m thinking at the moment. Sent your i.p though.

Let’s see if this still works…

Well it’s got it wrong cos I’m using Vivaldi, not Chrome 😛

I’ve used my personal one on my NAS quite often for when I’m travelling. It’s extremely handy, though I’m not 100% sure that as I’m not using OpenVPN if the data is encrypted or not.

Well, accepted the job offer – now to sort out moving up north.

Might want to avoid Hotspot Shield now @The Duke – https://research.csiro.au/ng/wp-content/uploads/sites/106/2016/08/paper-1.pdf

HotspotShield redirects user traffic to alibaba.com and ebay.com through its partner networks Conversant
Media and Viglink respectively. In the case of target.com, bestbuy.com, overstock.com, newegg.com and
macys.com we observed re-directions to Conversant Media.

You’ll need the structural plans, not the standard building plans. I work with plans daily (well, did before I switched to this job and will be when I move to my new job) and in general, they don’t show the structural walls (just all of them).

If it’s from the 60’s, I gather it’s unlikely to have the plans. Current regs state that building plans and data have to be given to the new occupier once complete, but even now that isn’t followed 100%. From the 60’s, you’re unlikely to have a full set lying around!

God, anything football related and I’ll stay well away. Can’t stand the game. At least Manchester has a velodrome to amuse me!

The hello stuff is fine – I’m from the South West and there we used to know everyone in the village!

Girlfriend is Irish, so rain is second nature to her and as a West Coast resident, so’s the cold :p

I think over the course of the weekend I’ve come to the conclusion that’ll it’ll probably be a good move. However, to hedge my bets, I think we may look into renting a house in Manchester when we move up there for 6 months or so to find somewhere we want to live whilst my place goes on the market. It’s all subject to discussion with the bank I guess as I’m still in my fixed interest period.

In terms of living arrangements, I think the girlfriend want’s somewhere near the centre (or at least near where she’s considering working) as at the minute, she’s hating her two hour commute.

Well, had the interview and they offered me the job (pretty much there and then – I was about 5 minutes out the door and up the road when they called me. Will amtch my current pay etc etc. Deal looks good and the company looks good. Would be a bit of a step up for me perhaps – it’s title Senior Engineer, which is what I’m currently called at my job, but perhaps it’s a Principal Engineer level (which is what my current firm call it) Basically more of a management role and I do similar at the minute. At least I try to if people actually followed the ladder – my boss ignores me and hands work out directly to my grads without informing me. ¬_¬

Job wise, it seems no reason not to move really but I need to think about it over the weekend.

I’m hard pressed to beat the Chromecast to be honest. It’s so simple, even the girlfriend can use it! I’ve the original Fire TV and I don’t use it at all anymore – not even to watch the Grand Tour (I watched the first one and haven’t since).

It’s not profitable. Not at all. Don’t do it. Waste of time. ?

Haha! Best of luck on it, it’s not something that I would intend on doing (selling on eBay is an experience I try and avoid if possible – though I guess shipping direct from Amazon would mean that skipping the post office would be avoided which is part of the eBay drama!).

Is there an option for keeping versions?

That’s part of the benefit of both Freefilsync and Syncback is that it can save versions of data so when you update the initial copy, it saves a version of the changed (or deleted files).

I use Private Internet Access – it’s cross platform, though I’ve struggled using it on Linux using the installed app. It was much easier to use the command line(!) and the certificates they download.

One thing I found was that the downloads through a dedicated device (such as a router or a Pi) would be a lot less due to the encryption of OpenVPN, namely due to the ARM processor. Slowdown when running the client direct isn’t noticeable (I’m on 70Mb Virgin). Ars did a homemade router here that shows the difference in numbers.

Also, I don’t tend to run the VPN much at home any more – I can’t really get around the Charter with it because whilst I’m technological able to, the girlfriend isn’t, so if the VPN causes issues with Netflix (it does), then she can’t figure out how to sort it out.

So basically you’re ordering from eBay, but the seller is purchasing the item from Amazon and shipping direct to the customer? It doesn’t seem like that would be profitable when taking into account eBay/Paypal fees as well.

I bought a copy of SyncbackPro years ago and it works great. There’s a free version that does the job for just USB drives. I also use FreeFileSync regularly as it’s cross platform.

Well, we’ll be going up next Friday to see what the job is like. I’ve spoken to an old colleague who works in Manchester and he knows the firm, gets on well with them and has suggested I roll out my A game as they’re worth getting in with.

I was very taken with Leeds when I studied there so this is perhaps the wrong side of the Pennines but I think I probably prefer Manchester to London! Cold doesn’t bother me though it may bother the girlfriend. But she’s Irish (West Coast) so she’s used to rain and cold!
