Was definitely for the guys on the ground. Weighs a fricking ton.

We also got to play with one of these. Would have liked to have a go, but they don’t let cadets fire them off funnily enough! Cock up of the camp probably goes to the female cadet who asked if she could “w**k the grenade launcher”. It was pointed out that she meant “rack” the grenade launcher… amused staff trying very hard not to collapse laughing!!

I honestly can’t remember! I believe it attaches to the standard issue helmet.

I suppose in your day they also didn’t have Darth Vader helmets… link.

We got to play with some “toys” of the RAF Regiment last year on camp.

We’ve a fairly laid back evening tonight (bull night – so the cadets should be getting the uniform ready for my inspection on Thursday!) so that’ll give me some time to have another look. Now it’s working, I’ll try the newer router and see how that fairs. If that works, then I’ll think we’ll be Ok thanks. If not, I’ll wait and see what the Plusnet router is like (we’ll be switching anyhow – the Plusnet package is half the price of what we’re paying for a year so it makes sense to switch).

Other Forumites have compained about the supplied Plusnet router. You might therefor be interested in this: Trendnet TEW-752DRU – N600 Dual Band Wireless Router £20.58 Ebuyer QuickFind: 632812 Edit: Oops, belay that. Forgot you need ADSL .

I’d bought this one a while ago to test the line with (it was under £20 at the time). But it refuses to connect even with the correct username and password. Not sure if I’m missing a setting somewhere.

Has to be better than this one we got with the broadband.

Tried using my old powerline networking plugs today there as well – speeds were worse than the wifi using Speedtest! And I just noticed there’s a cable that goes to the rear of the hut so at least where we’re looking at getting the flight sim, we should have wired internet.

@Duke – yeah it’s dog slow, but all we need it for is to get on to our management system and sharepoint. It’s not ideal but it’s to pricey to get fibre just for six hours use a week!

Not the fastest connection but it’s working!

And I’ve put in to change to Plusnet – half the price of what we’re paying for TalkTalk in a deal. Makes sense. Might be a better router than the crap Technicolour one we’ve got here currently! The Wifi can’t make it to the other end of the building – I’ve had to add in an extender.

Not used one myself but considering it – but based on what I’ve seen, your budget is to low for the specs you want (front and rear and 1080).

I’m trying to find more info on this Transcend and Anker ones.

Second phone call from an Openreach engineer trying to access the property.

Last one was last week, where I advised them that I cannot just drop tools as I don’t work nearby. The engineer was very helpful and said that they could book an appointment.

TalkTalk came back with an appointment for Thursday afternoon.

Except, I’ve just had a second call from an OR engineer trying to access the unit today. Again, I can’t make it because I’ve meetings all afternoon (let alone that the guys were outside waiting to get in and I’m a 25 minute trip away).

                      Running joke at the minute.

I caught it on Saturday morning in 70mm IMAX at the BFI in London (god that screen is HUGE).

Absolutely stunning. Those Stukas – christ, they make the ones in the Battle of Britain sound like toys! I also liked the nod towards the BoB, with Michael Caine as the dispatcher. Not sure if it was intentional but made me smile. Liked that it wasn’t the big name actors getting the bog main parts – that they just seemed to be the glue holding all the parts together nicely.

But as you say, great movie. (I then headed out to the RAF museum at Hendon, because I time to spare and thought it would suit the day).

                          Sorry to hear that.

Has he contact RAFA or the RAFBF for any assistance? I’m sure that’s why they’re their if needed. I donate monthly to the Ben fund and I’m a RAFA member so I’m aware that they do help out where needed.

If there’s no need to be at home they’ll be testing stuff in the green box or the exchange. Change ISP all you like, with copper you can’t avoid OpenReach and it’s them that are the issue not TT. Your only alternative would be Virgin if they have cabled your estate.

If that’s the case, then I’m less fussed. I assumed that the phone call I had after the text message was the Openreach guy telling me he can’t get in.

TalkTalk/Openreach must be having a laugh. Was told they’ll contact me in advance to arrange a date.

Missed call and a text message at 14:53 today stating that an engineer will be there shortly to run some tests, no need to be at home.

Except that it’s a gated compound that is left unoccupied during the day. If I’m charged for that, I’ll change provider. I was expecting at least a weeks notice, judging on BT’s performance!

Drezha, after the topic took the usual trip round the houses I wondered if the original issue was ever resolved and if you now have all services AOK?

No such luck yet. It took me until yesterday to get them a letter to change the details and organise an engineer visit becuase their system was down over the weekend. ಠ_ಠ

Good idea Chris. Will make fixing stuff much easier. Os wipe, down load their data. 20mins job dons. I wouldn’t offer it, I’d inform them of the terms of you IT support roll. If your not backing up with Dr Chris, Dr Chris won’t fix your broke arse computer. Also you have you refer to yourself on the 3rd person as you make your demands lol

Though reading up on the subject, it seems that the Government now have a “Cloud First” policy where they’ll look at storing information on the public clouds before setting up their own!

Using the storage for encrypted backup is handy. I’ve my Synology set to offsite to a Dropbox account at the minute – I would use Amazon Drive, but for some reason, it’s not connecting properly so I can’t. But agree with the Synology comments – it’s one of the better purchases I’ve made. I’m considering offering storage on it for friends and family for backups, as they try and get me to fix their machines once they get a virus anyhow. Might be easier to just have the backup coming to my Synology directly anyhow!

I am being polite with with the CS reps I’ve spoken to. Only one I have through seems like she was eating her lunch at the same time or was chewing gum – either way, not the nicest!

I may be getting somewhere, as I was just asked to supply a letter on headed paper to get the details switched. I’ll be be sending that off once their online system is working again! As it seems to have been down all weekend. Hopefully that’ll sort us out and then we’ll be able to access the internet (as the username and password for the router has now been lost by following the procedures to reset the router than they told my other staff member to do!)

Thanks for your help/advice. We’re looking at changing perhaps, but we’re stuck at the minute as I’ve just been posted to the unit and no one has username or account details so we’re stuck with what we have at the minute until they can verify me and then go from there.

I’ll get them to come down and fix it – I’d hope that some of the cadets aren’t that stupid to cut it but there’s never any guarantee! Looking around that hut on Thursday, that’s the only line I can see. It comes direct from the cables along the road and then into the hut and it’s where the only telephone plug is internally.

We’ve the money to pay for it, but obviously we’d rather not have to!

I bought Resilio Sync which allows for the same placeholder option. Can’t say I have it enabled, but it is handy know it’s there (I normally just don’t sync the folders to my laptop and access them via SFTP on my NAS if I really need them).
