Synology is a good call, I have the same. However, for moving data about, I use Resilio Sync. You could run it on a Pi with external hard drive nicely as an always on node (as Resilio will only sync when both machines are on). As it’s Bittorrent based, the more nodes you have online, the quicker the data can be synced, though I only have the one always on node (the Synology I have at home).

Well, money was an object when I just upgraded, so I stuck with a Ryzen 5 (the 1600X) with a nVidia 1060 and I’m pretty happy so far. If money was no object, I’ve have probably gone down the Threadripper route, just for fun.

Ed has mentioned the regs – garages have to be seperated from the rest of the house above by 60 minutes fire resisting construction, which should give you a measure of warmth (though, concrete is fireproof but not particularly well insulating from my limited knowledge of building thermals – something to do with it being a cold bridge IIRC)

Celotex and Kingspan – the regs allow you to use them in buildings under 18m, but be aware that Celotex was the material used in the cladding at Grenfell…

From Dave’s link, I have the plastic 5 port housing one and it works perfectly fine as well (it links my TV box, Pi, Apple TV to my router – so that’s 4 ports of the 5 used so far) and it works fine with all three devices running.

If it’s Windows Home, it’s probably in the terms and conditions.

Nowadays if it asks to update, I just do it then and there because it’s more hassle to wait.

On a Pi I would not bother about redundancy, its only a tiny beast so really hard work over an extended period can stress it to failure in areas other than the drive. A decent back-up regime is far more important. (Imaging the main drive and boot sectors are the best route). If you are really going to stress it over a long period, I’d recommend adding heat sinks to your pi (works better if you add a fan) There are lots of Pi uses detailed on line – this person seems to have similar ideas to yourself which may be a good starting point. From memory I believe Drehzda may also have done something similar.

I think it might have been Freakshow that went down that route in the end – I did try it but I ended up just changing the SSH port, accessing it via SFTP instead with a fail2ban server running on it. I stopped that when I got the Synology, but I have recently opened the Pi up to the outside again at home, as it’ll run tasks that the Synology wont (Pi-Hole as one example, and shell scripts with programs as another). I do have one at my local cadet hut that’s running as a print and file server, allowing me to print to the printer wirelessly and it’s running Resilo Sync so that I can sync documents etc that we need to work on.

The Sena looks good on the Techmoan website. However, it doesn’t look like it would easily fit my cycle helmet so it looks like that’s out 🙁

I believe someone here did actually do just that – Drezha? Might have been on the old forum. However the keys you get from EBay are for fresh installs only.

I did indeed. Just put the code in on Windows 10 Home (can’t remember where) and it then updated itself and updated in Win 10 Pro. I can confirm I started with Home and then moved to Pro, because initially I couldn’t install Biotlocker but I could after the update and that’s Windows 10 Pro only (for boot drives IIRC, as a Windows 10 Home can use a Bitlocker drive, but not as a boot device.)

I’d be interested to see how this effects our modelling machines, however, for stability reasons, we don’t connect these to the network in any way, so I don’t think we’ll be updating anytime soon.

As some may remember I tried a low carb diet back on MM a few years back which did work when I stuck at it. Well I am going to give it another more determined bash as of tomorrow. Would of started today but forgot to get some sweeteners for my Tea but well stocked up now. I am realy going to try and put some effort in this time. I know the first couple of weeks are going to be tough as I am going for about 30g of carbs a day.

Keto diet that sounds like. I did that a few years ago and it worked wonders. I’m trying to get back in to it now as well.

Yeah, that’s what I was looking for, but when it’s £6 for a 16GB or £6 for an 8GB, it sort of made sense to go for the larger one.

I did get a subscription to MagPi this year for Christmas so I’m hoping that one remains running for the time being!

On another note, I also have a newspaper subscription (shock!), though that’s only to RAF News.

Speaking on microSD cards, has anyone seen a good deal on some smaller ones? I ordered two 16GB cards from MyMemory this week for £6 each, but even that’s bigger than what I’m after. A 4 pack of 4GB or 8GB would be something along the lines of what I’m after (not just for use in a Pi – I’ve just got a Garmin eTrex for walking, and it currently seems like overkill to be using a 32GB microSD for map files that are currently under 1GB!)

Thanks Steve and Chris, just want to get the MRI and CT scans done and see the results. I’m prepared for whatever the results are, I am up to facing whatever happens. In view of your keen cadet stuff Chris, I reckon you would have made a good “crab”! ? I wanted to join the RAF from Technical School at 15 as a Boy Entrant, but my school then (1960) had a policy of making parents pay for each term missed if I left a year early. In the end I wound up in the Army Air Corps at 20, after training. AAC then referred to by the RAF as TWA, or “Teeny Weeny Airways” – from the Gutersloh and Wildenrath jet pilots who came to our Gliding Club. I asked a Lightning pilot why they loved gliding when they flew a Mach 2 jet – “You don’t fly those things, you just hang on, aim them and hope they don’t flame out! Without an engine, they fall out of the sky!” Gliding was second only to downhill skiing, for me. Para drops 3rd. Gliding was peaceful once I mastered Solo, downhill was just exhilerating, Para drops good for the adrenalin junky I was then. I generally find that anyone who wants to work in an aircraft environment, had an experience when they were young. Mine was being taken to Airshows by dad at a very young age, and taken for a flight in a DH Dragon Rapide biplane at 8 yo, from Squires Gate Blackpool, around the Isle of Man and back. What was yours?

Probably what got me started was a visit to the Fleet Air Arm museum with my Grandad. At the time, they had (and possibly still do), the prototype Concorde. Used to be able to hear that occasionally going for it’s sonic boom as we were near the Devon coast – probably occasionally a bit early for it as it isn’t supposed to sonic boom over land but if the weather was right, you’d hear it. We also used to live near to RAF (now RMB) Chivenor so that was handy. I joining the Air Training Corps after I left Scouts and loved it. Stayed with it as long as I could – made Cadet Flight Sergeant within a couple of years.

Tried to join the RAF after college as a WSO, was recommended I go to Uni and get some experience, a degree and come back. Didn’t really try and then left cadets. Rejoined cadets about 3 years ago, and then spent last year going for my commission with the regulars, but got rejected for medical reasons. Passed the same tests to get a commission in what was then the RAF Volunteer Reserve (Training) branch, but my commission was changed to a Cadet Forces Commission at the start of December and I’m now an RAFAC (RAF Air Cadet) Officer. More in keeping with my role and means I’m not quite bound by the same rules and regulations as the full commission (i.e. they can’t call me to war!) However, I still get to wear the light blue suit!

Got a week off in January, spending the week at RAFC Cranwell, on my Officers Initial Course. A 34 week course for new recruits, condensed in to a week(!) for cadet officers! In fairness, we skip all the bits like shooting, fitness and drill – having been taught drill already prior to going and then shooting is a personal preference, in comparison to actually being in the Regs. Though we also have a lot more to do on duty of care and child protection, which the regs don’t have to do, as they aren’t looking after kids. Sure some parents see us as a cheap babysitting opportunity for their kids.

They are fun – I’ve currently got a Pi 2 under the TV running my audio, a Pi 3 at my cadet hut as a file server (and now a temperature recorder), a Pi 3 next to my main machine that if needs be I can log in to and use a desktop and then two Pi Zero W’s that are awaiting USB temperature recorders before they to get placed around the house to act as a temperature logger.

Bob – Fingers crossed for you – I’ve been to the doctor before with some of those symptoms – it’s not one of the reasons I can’t join the RAF regulars as it’s on my medical record. I can appeal as long as I get a second medical opinion.

I’m was planning on walking 1000 miles as I’m hoping to go for my Lowland Expedition Leaders award this year (waiting to see if I’m one of the selected applicants from the North region RAFAC). However, I changed my mind to walking 3,650,000 steps in the year (10,000 a day). Partly because I didn’t want to just count my day to day activities for the the walking, but I know I wasn’t going to be able to meet 1000 miles from just recording walks. I even put together a spreadsheet to track it!

To aid, I’ve decided to “take up” geocaching. I tried my first cache yesterday but with no luck and I’ll try a few others locally. Could be a good excuse to get out on the bike as I’ve not done enough on that recently.
