Grab a raspberry Pi, set up your own. Works a treat for me.

I’ve looked at the PiVPN setup here. Seems to make it simple, but I’ve not tried.

Seems odd that whilst it’s in London, it appears it’s from Brussels? I believe our firm have a permanent one setup, as for whatever reason, we appear to be near London, not the middle of Manchester. Caused me some concern initially when my iPad was asked to confirm an iCloud sign in from London, when I’d just asked it to sign in whilst sat in Manchester.

Cant edit the original now, but I believe I have played with Autokey in the past without much success.

If you were after an Echo Dot, the prices were 50% off, so they went quick.

I have a subscription with Private Internet Access that I use occasionally, but rarely.

As BL states, if I’m looking to secure my online browsing from unprotected WiFi (looking at you Travelodge!), then I’ll often use a VPN back to my Synology NAS. In fairness, that’s only a L2TP VPN I’m using – I should probably look at getting OpenVPN setup on it (probably before I fly to Geneva at the weekend!) However, in this instance, PIA will usually cover me (I’ve also used the Tunnelbear free app for small periods of time, but as the free data is like 300Mb a month, this is usually an “emergency” situation).

I could look at getting it set up on my GL.iNet router… That’s a handy little device. Supports OpenVPN, but I’ve used it in the past to just get around Travelodge’s two items on the Wifi policy.

On the other hand, any contact prior to GDPR might need some degree of revalidation of the contact.

Judging from the amount of emails before it came in, asking to be kept on the mailing list, I assume that this was a requirement or was at least something companies were covering themselves with.

Have I missed this being split from another topic?

My current view is that I’m disappointed with all three main OS’s! Windows, with it’s inbuilt spyware, but I guess when you can get it now for £5, there are are some trade offs, so it’s not the end of the world. And most of the time I’m not using the inbuilt Windows apps to get the adverts and it’s rare I even open the start menu now thanks to Launchy! Apple, I’ve just got depressed with the cost of it all and Linux, whilst I’ve been playing with both Kubuntu and Mint recently, it’s been a bit of a faff.

I’m exactly the same with the Android and iOS. I have one of each and I’m impressed with some features and not others. All have pros and all have cons.

I use Windows 10 mainly at work, though our modelling kit all runs Linux now (Mint, as not all of the users are fully au fait with Linux, so it helps them use it if it’s similar to that of Windows) and I have a Mac Mini that sees occasional use but at the minute I’m flip flopping between it and Mint (mainly I think because it doesn’t like my HDMI switcher, so I don’t want to have to change the cable every time I turn it on!)

Mark, you’re in Wigan. 10 minutes away from Warrington if the Virgin train turns up on time.

I’ve never stopped in Warrington, always passing through it on the way to Liverpool for work.

Did I see a thread about a northern meet up recently?

On this subject – “They Shall Not Grow Old” on iPlayer now- incredible remastered WW1 footage by Peter “Lord Of The Rings” Jackson. Eerie but an amzing job.

Thanks for the link! I was going to go to the cinema to see this, so this has saved me some money!

Mark, I would have been at that parade where the video was taken, as I was marching at the head of the Air Cadet section of the parade. I’m afraid I can’t confirm if it’s true as we finished the parade and then headed around the corner for some photos with the parents. The parade was a bit of a SNAFU actually taking part in it, not sure what it was like for someone not in it (i.e. we formed up and marched off late, the civic dignitaries were late and I’m sure the two minutes silence lasted longer than two minutes (or at least the gun shots were not timed correctly!) Either way, that shouldn’t detract from the reason that we were there.

Google Play Music has a sleep timer built in as well (noticed it today).

I also think it picks up music files on the phone as well without having to download them or upload them to Google Play Music (similar to Google Photos, as that can act as a gallery app for the phone itself).

But it looks like you’re all sorted.

At the minute, it’s sat next to the router and therefore wifi isn’t really an issue for it. I’ll bear it in mind if I move it however,

Had an issue with the Pi yesterday running for whatever reason, so dug out the new Pi 3+ that I had lying about upstairs waiting to be used and a 30GB SSD I’d had from a previous purchase, and it’s flying! Amazed at how much difference the SSD has made, even over USB2. I’d go as far as to say it’s a pretty usable machine for day to day use – I installed the GUI version of Raspbian and then Pi Hole, as I’m looking at remoting in and running programs when needed as various software items I use don’t work nicely on Mac or Windows and it seems to be running things like that extremely nicely.

I had one today from HSBC about some documents, and as I was waiting for some from them, I thought it could be real – until I noticed it had been sent to my screwfix@realemail alias, so it’s clearly fake (and Screwfix have either sold my email or been hacked).

Their (Xiaomi) hardware looks great but have read they are integrating advertising into the OS….as opposed to at App-level. Can’t remember where I read it but was enough to make me think twice.

Got this on Windows 10 yesterday, a Spotify advert in Groove Music. Only there because I was trying to open a media file that iTunes and every other item thought was corrupt.

My car had a very heavy frost on it this morning, it’s in the shade from about 3pm to 9am at this time of year. The front of the house can be freezing cold and the back baking hot.

I’m looking at getting a cover for the car this year to reduce/stop the ice/frost, as I found last year the clearing the ice would knock about 15 miles off the 30 mile range of my battery in the car! (and driving it to work on the electric is cheaper than petrol for when I actually have to drive to work).

I’ve used them in the past and they’ve been good. However, clicking the link, I see they now offer an S3 compatible storage facility for $5 (for 250GB), which looks good. Could be a reasonable offsite storage location for Synology backup.

The TP-Link ones don’t require a hub to work.

I’ve got one of the TP-Link ones. There are dimmable and multi coloured versions. Bayonet and screw fit (it comes with an adapter) so you’re good to go. I wanted one to go in our hallway that could be controlled from the phones, as our outside light is broken at the minute – but it wont work, as I ordered it, forgetting it’s a three candle bulb chandalier type thing.  So it’s in the front room on the light next to the sofa and works quite well. I’ve found that the plugs are better than the lights (well, more useful!) Think we have about 4 remote TP-Link switches now in common use and an EVE plug (which is no where near as good, but has better “data” collection which is helpful for charging my car.)

I’m flogging the Pocophone as it’s not for me. Used for about a week but probably cant return to Laptops Direct.

Also got the G6 Plus that I’ll probably stick on eBay, unless someone is interested in that as well. I did prefer that one to the Pocophone to be honest – just in terms of size and weight.

Spent the night outside under canvas, for the last time this year (well, the last DofE group this year) as the DofE season ends at the end of October. Thankfully, no hyptothermic cadets and three groups managing to pass the Bronze award! (All 15 were checked for hats and gloves before leaving!)

Thankfully no rain, as if it had been cold and wet, the supervisors probably would have had to have pulled the plug. Unlike my Lowland Expedition Leaders assessment in Edale at the start of the month, where it rained on the Friday night as I arrived and in to Saturday morning and I woke up to ice on the inside of my tent on the Sunday…

It would be mainly browsing and office based tasks. Maybe some encoding overnight (I currently have the Pi download me some Youtube videos with youtube-dl overnight and then encode them to MP3 to listen to) but as the Pi does that, I don’t see why this shouldn’t be able to do the same.

I found the Celeron based machines just a bit to slow for day to day browsing. I think I had issues as well streaming music to the device from my NAS. well, not even streaming, it was being played over an NFS share. There isn’t much in terms of price separating that and the Ryzen, so I guess the smaller machine could well do the job.
