LTT covered this not to long ago.
TL;DW; Sortof fixes the PC, But Mostly No

Yeah, I’ve ended up going back to the Pi3+ for the time being as that works quite nicely for what I need to do for the time being.

Just found out what I’d always suspected from your posts, you can use a phone sim in a dongle / router. Ofcom got written confirmation from Three. This brings Smarty into play with their current unlimited offer of £18.75 and a rolling 1 month contract.
This is what we’ve been using at cadets for the past few month or so.

This was why I was running in to issues… The Pi 4 doesn’t support booting from USB! At least, not yet and requires some playing around and using the Pi as the bootloader.

I have a feeling that the data is already being sent through a VPN, even whilst in the office, as if I try and log in on an Apple device whilst in the office (in Manchester), it suggests that I’m signing in via London. In addition, trying to save files over the VPN from home can be slow – but I’m on a 70Mbps connection with Virgin (though there upload isn’t as good as the old BT line I was on).
Anyhow, may not be here for much longer if my interview on Monday pans out! (a move back to the Midlands beckons if everything works out…)

All PCs and laptops are encrypted and they are discouraged from using USB sticks, which they don’t have much need to now they have a VPN to the office. I usually create a single encrypted one for emergencies though.
Here’s hoping they have a faster internet connection than my current workplace! Using work VPN is a nightmare. Even worse when used on a dodgy/slow hotel wifi – to the extent that my current projects are transported around with my on my portable SSD. Bitlocker encrypted throgh.
As to D-Dan’s comments, it has caused me issues with the cadets as well. Knee jerk reaction is that no information stored locally on squadrons, all has to rely on the MOD backed server system (which is just Office 365…) Great. Until you have a squadron where the internet isn’t working or where the squadron commander hasn’t been given the log in details to review all the information… happened to me more times than once so far. As far as I was aware, as long as I took reasonable precautions, it would be acceptable (i.e. keep cadet consent forms under lock and key).

I didn’t see a fan module, though did buy the heatsinks for it as well – is this the one you mean?
I’ll see how I get one – most of the time, it’s fairly idle as it runs Pi Hole, but then I get it converting Youtube video and that hits the CPU as you might expect.

Ordered myself the 2GB version. I use it as a remote desktop over VNC, so improved desktop performance would be good. The 4GB version was sold out by the time I decided.
I didn’t really need, but I’m coming to the end of a major project at work and thought I’ll have some time to myself next week.

Haven’t had issues with DS Photo previously, but I did switch to Photosync a while back, because it can file them in yearly/monthly folders automatically.

I’m thinking I’ll get it and from GOG this time, as they’re doing a deal for it and the Witcher series.
£50 is pricey, but looking back, they were £30 when I was a kid, and that was almost 16 years ago, so accounting for inflation, it’s not to bad.
Trouble is, I’m still considering Fallout 76, even after the bad press (as it looks like it’s getting better).

Thanks for the Smarty idea – just ordered that for cadets. It’s Unlimited and not speed limited like the GiffGaff unlimited SIM, so we’ll use that until the civilian committee can figure out a broadband package…
35Mbps? Lol – I managed to stream the Guy Martin 4OD documentary this evening on my crappy 2.5Mbps Travelodge wifi, so something doesn’t add up there!

I would recommend an SSD over a hard drive for the reason you state – adding external storage is potentially easier to do than add an SSD (laptop dependant).

Yeah, there aren’t many 13A plug in ovens left now we were told (and found) as it’s not strictly in compliance with the EU regs, but short of a rewire of the kitchen, that’s not a possibility. We might have the hard wire there hidden behind somewhere, but for now we wanted to replace like for like, especially as we might be moving (not only do I have an interview with Dublin FRS, I’m waiting to hear back from a role in Nottingham as well)
It’s a pure electric oven, no gas involved.

I’ve converted all the customers Synology backups to my server to a C2 Cloud service. 1 TB in Frankfurt with all the bells and whistles for 85 Euros a year, a tenner each. No brainer for many reasons. Might be a solution for your Eire server @drezha. Basic 100GB is only a tenner a year Plans.
Already on the 300GB plan, as I’ve got my NAS backing up to it as well. 😉 I planned to replace it with my Mac Mini, but that hasn’t seemed to have happened yet. I am still using the Mac Mini, but as a standard desktop, rather than a NAS.

I got a refund and on digging, found I had a spare O365 activtion on the work email, so installed it via that instead!

I normally now use my work iPhone connection for conecting when travelling for work, rather than rely on the wifi at hotels – take this trip at the minute – free Premier Inn wifi is capped at 1Mbps. I get far faster than that on the iPhone and I’ve got the data to cover it!
We did appear to break the TP-Link at cadets the other night though – all the computers being on and getting Windows updates seemed to use all the bandwidth up which was an issue.

The Pocophone is very good. I had one briefly but it didn’t play nice with Android Auto. Other than that, it was a cracking device.

Richard, link appears to be missing? I’ll have a google and see what I can find.

I took the punge the other day and stumped up 115 English pounds for a 1TB SSD. Money well spent.
