@Bob – SD card is present, but just can’t be encrypted, or used as internal storage. It can function as a storage medium fine though. Beats the Oneplus, which doesn’t even have an SD slot. ” Ah – I understand that Chris. But if I find my next prospective Tab won’t allow Internal storage for an SD, it will affect my choice. Although I have just recently rediscovered a tricky little 60 GB USB Slider gadget which has one USB 3 connector and the other end will connect to the tablet. I was going to use that to install music tracks to the tablet and phone, then forgot about it. That will be good for overspill tablet storage in the desktop. Thanks, made me think of an alternative. Brain kick started once again!

      That makes sense!

It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it’s inconsiderate, considering Android supports it!

Incidentally, work have just purchased me an iPad Pro 11″ – I’m intending to do something similar to your idea now that that the iPad can properly access external storage, but I gather that it still has major limitations (I assume I won’t be able to play music off the USB drive for example), but it’ll be used as a general laptop and will do for the most part (carrying out site inspections and recording meeting notes!)

Incidentally I have had no other crashes and no reason, so far, to dislike any antics from the Epyx Store.

The developers are also making quite a saving over Steam, but aren’t passing any of that on.

On the other hand, Steam was a bit of a monopoly, so it’s about time that others tried to improve on things!

The Deference industry doesn’t have secret squirrel phones, if they exist they will be for James Bond Types, they use the same kit we all use on the same networks. Of course there are software management tools on top of all this, but if features are blocked at a hardware level there’s nothing they can do.

I’m only exposed to that in a minor way – for cadets, as we use MOD resources, we’ve had to switch to using the Outlook app for accessing emails, as it can force the phone to be encrypted etc. The phone is encrypted, but the microSD card isn’t (and can’t be). Still impressed that cadets allow us to do BYOD to, but then I guess if they didn’t, they don’t have the money to support us and nothing would get done!

I saw somewhere some excuses saying that it prevents poor performance on the phone when people use the wrong micro SD cards.

Only managed two photos today with it – one with the AI and the other without. Can’t tell any difference!

          AI on
          AI Off

I’ll try and get some night mode shots tomorrow.

Speed wise, everything is good enough, no major issues. Missing my Airpods, but I can link those up when I get round to it.

Default app list is fairly sparse (though can’t get rid of Facebook ಠ_ಠ). Android was a bit of a faff getting on to the eduroam network at work, but got there in the end. Managed to pair my Garmin Vivoactive 4S (though it took me a while to realise it wasn’t connecting as it was still connected to my iPhone!)

Have discovered that it’s on the Microsoft Store, so I can purchase it without having to support Epic’s store so I can still stand by my morals! However, as I’m away from my home during the week until the house sale, I’ve not got a PC to play it, so it may have to wait anyhow.

I’ve also noticed that it’s on Xbox Live Pass for PC, access for which during the Beta appears to be £1 a month… Or at least the first month for £1, then £4 afterwards, then perhaps £8 after the Beta, but I can’t confirm that.

Haven’t been able to have much play over the weekend but have got it setup and had a minor play.

It’s got fairly minimal bloatware as you might expect for a Moto G series. The Moto actions are always good and no difference here (the torch one is usually handy).

Takeaways at the minute – the microSD card does not appear to be supported in formatting as internal storage. Not sure if that’s a factor of my SD card or just in general. Not a major issue, but I wanted it, as it encrypts the microSD card, whereas the standard version now is unencrypted, so if I lose the phone, the data on the SD card is available to anyone. I was going to use if a backup of my PC, but that might be out of the window now (it’s a Sandisk 128GB one so not a cheapo nasty card). I can’t encrypt it either from the menu, so it looks like Motorola have disabled that for whatever reason.

Other than that, it’s fairly standard. I’ll grab some photos tomorrow – there’s some AI for the camera, so I’ll try it with and without that and see what the difference is.

Well, it arrived today, so I’ll have a play and comeback with some impressions on it later this weekend.

Yeah, £240 seems pretty reasonable to me! G series has always been cracking.

Can’t let you know for sure if it’s 5G, as Tesco aren’t on the 5G bandwagon yet. Not sure if any of the later 8 series will be 5G – it’s a possibility, as they have the Power version which is slightly different to the rest, so it’s possible.

Interesting to note that the Amazon pages says they’ll only charge when shipped, yet the payment has already gone through ಠ_ಠ

Well, refund organised with Amazon and the G8 Plus pre-ordered on Amazon… (here, as I couldn’t find it by searching). Had the link directly off the Motorola website.

Oh, man, I didn’t realise it was on the Epic store. That will mean I delay purchasing it, as it does look really good and chances are I’d be buying it, but I’m not keen on getting the Epic Store due to the their past practises.

How long that’ll hold out, I’m not sure.

In the meantime, I guess I could play Skyrim on the Switch that my wife bought me for Christmas (bought early to keep me amused on the plane to the US!)

Can you see in the Android settings what’s using the data? That would show up what is using the data.

I wouldn’t want to go back to a pure petrol car (I’ve never owned a diesel so can’t comment). My Golf GTE (well, previous firms, but my company car) was fantastic. I loved the pure electric mode (though it was 30 miles of range).

We had to go for a Toyota Hybrid this time when we had to buy the car ourselves as our budget couldn’t stretch to a pure EV (and as we were moving, we couldn’t guarantee that that house we would move to would support charging). It’s not as good as the GTE, but we had to make some compromises!

Looking around, this appears to have Android 9 now, is that correct?

Amazon have a UK version for £260 now. Mine went back as Android Auto issues meant it was pretty poor experience for me. However, as I changed jobs and the company car went back, we don’t have a compatible car now.

Was looking at either this or a Moto G7 as need Android for some tricks at work that iOS just can’t do.

My G5 is still going fairly strong as a bedroom audio player!

John, if all you need is 32GB I’d go for this.

Bloody hell, that’s basically throw away pricing! 😲

I tried to buy smaller ones for my Pi’s at one point, but it worked out more expensive!

PiHole works on a Pi Zero, o the original Pi would be no issues at all. It deals with the DNS queries only, so it’s relatively low hit to the performance. If you want to view the stats on the webpage etc, that takes a bit more time.

I use Chrome at work (as it’s installed by IT so it’s either that or Edge or IE!) and at home I use Firefox – the killer feature for me is the Container Tabs. I use that so I can browse my own Microsoft account, my Work O365 account and my cadet O365 account seperate from each other and not worry about log ins.

I’ve played with Vivaldi in the past and been impressed with that – it’s Chrome for power users really! Lots of configuration options and you can make the browser your own. Uses Chrome extensions as well, so it’s expanable.

I gave up on Opera when it went to the Chrome backend and then I’ve since heard that the inbuilt VPN is Chinese, so I’ve not really trusted it since then. I could be wrong however…

I wanted something similar to monitor my room that I’m renting in Loughborough at the minute as it seemed very humid.

I went for one of the cheaper sensors and have had no end of trouble with it – in the end I purchased this from Amazon for about the same price and saved myself hassle!

However, then using the data is problematic, but as I only wanted to monitor, it isn’t an issue. Probably use the same sensors!

I also think if you’re running the Pi headless, you now also have to set the resolution for VNC within the config file as well (at least, I have had to for the last two times I’ve set the Pi up), otherwise it doesn’t boot a GUI up if not connected to a HDMI cable (or you could use one of these, which I have left over from running a Mac Mini server headless, as without it, it wouldn’t give me the full display options!)

You can also enable ssh by creating a file called ssh on the fat portion of the microSD card (i.e. flash the card, then when it’s complete, Windows will mount the microSD section it can write to and you create the ssh file there).
