Excellent news!

Dave have you had any experience with the B535 the misses has got her new caravan (wants broadband for now tv and stuff in the van) and has seen it on 3 we can get it for £17 a month. Cheers Mark
We have the B535 and it seems decent enough. Only issues we’ve had are Three not billing us correctly for the past two months (and some recent slow downs, but I believe this is a network issue, not the router).

Never heard of Sugru but it looks very useful. I will try and get some and try it.
I used it in my old house for fixing a shower and for minor other tasks. From memory, it has a fairly short shelf life which is a pain. Not sure if that’s improved.

Yea, the MacBooks will fit a biro spring there to help strengthen it. However, I’d use Sugru myself.

Does the router have an ethernet port – if so can you connect your work laptop in to it and see if the problems remain? Otherwise the phone/hotspot option sounds good, and I’d agree that router hardware can be an issue. I’ve had to return a new Asus router recently and my eldest is on Three 4G and his first router was kaput (as a bonus they gave him the better model at the original price).
Router has a number of ports and effected all items plugged in to it, so I was toying with the router being the issue, but it seems to be far better today (Synology actually backed up overnight and sent me the email to confirm, which hadn’t been happening as it was so bad).

It’s much better this evening, but everything still appears to be jumpy. Youtube and streaming seems to be hitting the lowest they’ll go mind.
I’ll try the SIM tomorrow, but will need to check – I believe it’s one that will allow me to split between a nano and micro SIM.
I note that the Pi Hole is set to use Google but has mainly been using OpenDNS – I’ve removed that and I’ll see what happens.

These issues can often be down to DNS. Change the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and see what happens.
It’s set to 8.8.8.8 on the Pi Hole as the upstream server. I can try another, such as the OpenDNS servers. I’d normally expect to see if connect quicker once it’s a site that I’ve visited already though wouldn’t I? As that doesn’t seem to be happening,
The wifi router can also be a problem. On my totally carp BT ‘Smart’ Homehub the wifi Internet goes t-up every two weeks or so (no issues on wired!), and I have to restart the darned thing to get it to wifi handshake with the Internet. Then flawless for another two weeks – rinse and repeat.
This has been reset daily since the issues started, as that was the issues I thought would be resolved.

Holding off on getting fibre, but if Three charge me the wrong amount again this month, I’ll be complaining and asking to cancel.
There are some decent price fibre packages now – had a look at Origin Broadband today – £27 a month all in for 64Mb fibre seems reasonable. Far better than the price we were paying with Virgin and cheaper than the £29 Three appear to be charging me currently.
Mind it all comes at once, as EON are billing us for the wrong meters, so I’m currently in arguments with them – as they’re taking money and so are British Gas (who are billing the correct meters – as I confirmed with them today. Well, one correct meter, as the gas meter isn’t on the National Grid database but have said that if the reading was correct when we moved in, it should be fine).

Not sure if Three have been having outages locally – but the speed over the last three or four days has been awful.
I’d even looked around for fibre packages (as the other half was complaining!)

I’d seen it before, but only from the Resilo Sync forums, as they originally posted the script for download using Bittorrent Sync (as it was then) to reduce bandwidth constraints – however, BTSync/Resilo have hardcoded a maximum swarm size in it, so they were experiencing download issues.

No mention of what happens to the air con/heating system and the other rooms. Reassured – yes I’m totally reassured.
It looked reasonably new – these days the heater and air conditioner would only be within the room.
The 15 minutes may be how long they believe the virus can survive outside the host?

It’s hit the UK now – two confirmed cases (not from the quarantined flight lot).

Thanks for the link. I don’t think I’ve got Flash installed on the Mac and I’d be keen to avoid it!

UK Dog walkers should now make themselves aware of the symptoms of Lyme Disease (from Deer Ticks). I knew someone in the US who had it without knowing about it for months and it played havoc with his body and brain before finally being cured. Had it been identified early on he would not have been as badly affected.
Any walkers to be honest. We brief the cadest on ticks and tick checks whilst out hiking, usually when we’re in Wales for our adventure training weeks,

I’ve got the Pro 11 inch that work purchased for us – whilst the University is mainly Windows focused, the apps we use for the risk assessments is far easier to use on the iPad than the web based version on the Windows tablet. A Surface also makes for a poor inspection tool due to the size – iPad Mini’s would possibly be better options for us, but myself and the other fire officer don’t use laptops, so we use these as a cross.
But as a home user, the cost of the Mac range is increasingly difficult to justify. I paid out for the new Mac Mini – upgraded the CPU, mainly as it also came with the larger 256GB SSD. That’s almost £1300 from memory. Whilst there are a number of apps that I use on the Mac that either don’t have Windows or Linux counterparts, I can look at moving to different software, which possibly wont be as good, or requiring some getting used to, but I imagine I may struggle in the future to consider it.

January’s bill is also at £29, so I’m on the live chat to them (again) to resolve. If it happens in February, I will be writing to them to close the account and that as they haven’t been providing their side of the contract,I wont’ expect to pay any early termination fees. Then I’ll get my own router and go with SMARTY, as it’s been working out reasonably well.

Bob, no problem at all.

Just stumbled across this now and realised that we purchased a TZ90, seperately without seeing this thread, for our honeymoon!
Cracking camera – got some lovely shots from the honeymoon!

If you know the college/course details an email to the appropriate student union might produce a helpful reply.
Not sure that the SU would be the best place to go for info on that – students unions are usually seperate entitites from the University itself. However, depending on the Uni, they may have a department for it.
The IT or IS department would probably be the best point of call to start with – certainly Nottingham and Loughborough have (and I can’t recall from my time at Leeds), student facing helpdesks for IT queries.
However, you may not need a portable – depending on the Uni. At Nottingham, we run a laptop loan in the library (link). Don’t think it’s used much mind (and caused my predesscor no end of trouble apparently).

Gigarefurb is also another second hand corporate machine sales site.
