Ed, I agree. I’ve actually put my new machine on hold purely because of Ryzen. I use a single VM on occasion for those rare occasions when I need Windows, but being a linux user and knowing that there are some issues with Ryzen and the current kernel, I figure patience may pay dividends. Ask me again in six months 🙂

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

I’ve had a couple of videos using 50s music muted on YT because WB or Sony et al objected. I challenged both times and, whilst it took a couple of months, on both occasions YT restored the audio (at least in the UK). I used the shorter copyright expiry in the UK as part of my challenge.

Yep, just checked, and audio is still there.

I may post a pic tomorrow, but now that all drives are working, just the thought of taking the side panel off scares me in case I slightly disturb a cable.

Another worry is power, now. The Phenom X4 is not exactly frugal on power, and the GTX680 chews some watts up, too. I have a Corsair 650 modular PSU in there (though the modular bit is kinda redundant, now, with so many power cables running). The efficiency of the PSU is good (better than my previous 850 non-modular) and it seems to be holding up well. Maybe tomorrow I’ll set it off on a GPU render of a heavy Blender scene and see how it lasts.

In the meantime, I’m starting to think about a new system – looking at i7 7770 and NV 1080 base (6Gb model), 16Gb RAM with no OS and a single SSD. I can probably transplant a couple of drives, drop this rig down to headless and run it all from a single KB/Mouse/Monitor. Just gotta get the £1,200 it will cost together and spare.

Even hoping I can clone this OS and adapt to move to Intel architecture instead of AMD. May wait, though. Ryzen looks good, but apparently still unstable on Linux.

Blender has an architectural plugin that makes building a room very easy, and will work to real world scale (in fact, it’s recommended to use real world scale as it makes lighting easier).

Amazon hardly encourage pay to play, either. I have a prime subscription, but there are still TV series that charge per episode.

I’ve either paid, or I haven’t. They can’t have it both ways.

At least my Netflix subscription doesn’t have extra costs.

I imagine that would probably be more expensive than buying, but, I wonder if I could build for 3D printing (I’m quite handy with Cinema 4D and Blender, both of which can work to real world scale). The advantage of this approach would be easily sourced replacement parts.

If I had a workshop, or even a garage, I’d give it a go, but in a one bedroom 3rd floor flat, it would prove something of a challenge 🙂

I’d found the idle-tyme site (and they do look very nice). I would happily go second hand, but even the British museum has one, so it shows how rare they must be now. I think I may have to bite the bullet and order international.

@TheDuke. It’s not just the tick. You should hear them at 1 O’Clock when all the balls go. I used to have it in my bedroom when I was around 15 YO and could sleep right through it. The rest of the family hated it 🙂

Yes, I should have said I’ve seen a couple around in the States. I was hoping to find one in the UK, but if I must, I must.

The original is long gone (it was more than 30 years ago with many life upheavals since), sadly.

To respond, yes, I’m probably over-protective of Linux systems. And I accept that the manufacturers are probably more at fault than the users. However, a majority of users are using Linux (Android), and whilst Google do a better job than most, there has to be some responsibility for device security on the user. I would much rather see that security exposed to the end user (as has been highlighted) and at the very least, a first time prompt to set a unique password.

“IoT users who don’t want to change default passwords and close or limit access to telnet and SSH out of concern they’ll be used in crippling attacks against others now have a much more self-interested reason for locking down their devices—preventing them from being bricked.”

There’s the problem, not the devices, but the users. As I said, if users actually did the smart things, not a problem.

It’s not really a problem. “Normal” tech users don’t use Linux. Those that do don’t use generic passwords.

I’m on random play in Clementine at the moment. Last tune was Richard Hawley, modern(ish) artist with a very 50s sound. I saw him live as a result of winning free tickets to a show in secondlife maybe 9 – 10 years ago. Shame my date couldn’t make it – it was a blast. Now playing (whilst I’m typing) Gene Vincent 🙂

Whichever way you voted (and in the interest of transparency, I voted out, but would abide by the majority whichever way it went, hell, I was a conference delegate for one of the top 10 unions in Europe and had to move, and win a motion I personally opposed).
