Well, ordered one and a floating arm mount. They should arrive tomorrow, so I’ll update when tested.

First thing I said when I started reading the Metro on the train the other day, 10 pages of “Royal Wedding”. Yesterday, 1/2 page of the latest atrocity this government has committed in Brexit.

I’m with the republicans an conspiracy theorists all the way on this.

@Richard. I wish. Generally, I’m the fittest, healthiest chronically ill person I know.

Just a run of bad luck, I guess.

I feel her pain. After a third visit to the docs, the first identifying an infection that had gone into my left lung, a course of antibiotics cleared it up. The doc wanted a sample, which I was unable to provide, but the follow up visit that got fixed, and whilst the lung had cleared up, seems I also have a water infection, so another course of a different antibiotic.

What’s more annoying is that neither infection has exhibited any symptoms of it’s own, but both have played havoc with my diabetes. 🙁

As much as a Linux enthusiast that I am, thewhole Munich project was badly handled. Suddenly (comparitively) dumping everything familiar with so much that isn’t was always doomed to failure.

The better option would have been to stick with Windows, whilst introducing cross platform OSS piecemeal. Once staff are familiar with the OSS versions rather than closed and costly, then then they could start thinking about the underlying OS. Since open source generally works the same across platforms, the learning curve would have been much narrower.

All they’ve achieved is to tighten M$ grip on them.

I occasionally get little black things clinging to my wall. They are lonesome characters, not social at all, so only appear rarely. I have no idea what they become, or where they go. Maybe I eat them in my sleep, dunno.

Well, it seems almost every other day a legacy addon gets an update to work. Still no Lastpass, but Adblock now has two options, the original, and the “new and improved”. The difference between the two seems to be whitelisting in the legacy update, and blocks everything in the new one.

Honestly, since this is my desktop, and FF remembers the logins anyway, it really isn’t much of an issue for now. It’ll be nicer when lastpass updates, but for now, Meh.

As for the browser itself, I originally started using FF years ago, and it got slower and slower. Quantum seems to have Mozilla back on track. I really can’t tell the difference in speed between this and Chromium for startup (maybe FF is slightly slower), but in general use, FF seems slightly faster.

Well, doing a little more experimenting. A couple of times it’s delayed starting while updating plugins, so the updates are coming. LastPass still not one of them, but I’ve been manually copying logins for my more frequently used sites, which is not a huge problem.

At the moment, it’s going well. There’s a plugin for Netflix, which fixes the issues on Linux that has plagued FF, and it works for Amazon Prime video, too.

At the moment, bookmarks is separate from the main drop down menu, which keeps catching me out, but I’ve added the bookmarks button as close to the correct place as I can get it, so again not a huge issue. More a muscle memory issue if I’m honest.

I have to say, it is definitely faster than the old FF, and seems to be working well up to now.

                          I’ll keep you updated.

Just a thought. I have two front USB ports, and both work, except with SD card readers. Then, only one is reliable with the other being hit and miss. May be worth just trying a different port.

I have an identical condition in my upper spine, which manifests as agonising pain down my right arm. I find that codeine-ibuprofen helps. Codeine for the pain, and the ibuprofen for the inflammation.

                                Maybe worth a go.

Ever hear of creative accounting D-Dan ? Im sure you havent ?

Oh, I’m eminently familiar with the concept. However, I am also very familiar with PCRT (Professional Conduct with Relation to Tax)  and the latest law governing the profession which means that as of 30 September this year an adviser assisting with tax avoidance (which incidentally despite what the press says is not illegal – it’s evasion that is illegal) can be prosecuted without a definitive description of what constitutes “avoidance” (e.g. regular every day tax planning could be caught).

So would I trust MS creativity with that. No!.

Only use Win at work and the update took 1.5 hours there (time I should have been, well y’know, working). Thing is, in a professional accountancy environment, what creative tools do I need, other than my mind?

OK here’s the scene. Samples are still lowish at 500 but I assume at least de-noising. If rendering on CPU only on the render settings (the camera icon) scroll to performance and set tile size to 32 or 64. As a general rule large tile sizes for GPU rendering and small for CPU rendering.

Damn the file is too big even when zipped. (5.9 Mb).

I don’t waste time. On the C2D in the laptop, the end result will be around 1h 10m, which is still a massive increase on GPU rendering, but not so bad that it can’t be used as a test. Next post is the scene and details for setting it up for CPU only rendering. Image textures are packed into the file, so it should be immediately useable.

Even if your idea doesn’t take off, it’s a handy benchmark lighter on resources than the standards (especially on RAM).

OK, I’ve put together a scene. I’ve reused a couple of assets from a much more complex project. It’s simply a couch in the corner of the room.

I deliberately chose them because the complex shaders make it a decent test. It will require blender 2.79 (with denoising and the principled shader – ie. the latest release version).

On my main rig, with GPU rendering it takes around 3.5 minutes (newer NVidia cards will chew through it faster).

On my aging HP6710b laptop, core 2 duo mobile without a dedicated GPU well, it’s still going, but ETA is around 1.7 hours.

The advantage is RAM usage is around 180 Mb so any modern(ish) machine should handle it on memory.

                                            Shall I upload?

EDIT: Probably worth adding it’s all my own original work, so no danger of copyright infringement.

EDIT2: I can probably find an older version that doesn’t use the principled shader if anyone is afraid of upgrading an existing blender installation. I’ve only converted this week and have 18 previous saves.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
