I’d recommend adding heat sinks to your pi

I have a set due for delivery today 🙂

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

OK, first at EdP, I never even considered a USB enclosure. I have a BT HH, which does have a USB port, but never tested it, which means I don’t know how well it performs.

The reason for NAS (and USB would probably solve this just as well), is to liberate a bucket load of duplicated drive and sd space across my varied machines and to get it all in one place. Now, since I also want this to be accessible to me outside of my home network, and will possibly throw in another drive for redundancy, I’m now wondering about my best options.

And BTW, anyone know of a simple solution to locating and removing dead media? I have several files that look fine, until I try to play them. Mainly audio, and replaceable, but until I try …..

The graphics acceleration is enabled by default, and no, it doesn’t help 🙂

ssh is more than enough. Since I dumped the desktop, and have X forwarding working for graphical applications, I don’t see an immediate need for VNC.

Exactly why I have my own server. As an added bonus, I can create my own throwaway address if required.

Read what? lol. No, I didn’t. Just playing at the moment. If it all goes pear shaped it’s not the end of the world.

My pulseaudio problem was a doddle in the end. I forgot the lesson from pulse troubleshooting 101. Check the channels aren’t muted in alsamixer. Doh!

As for ssh, since it’s pre-configured in the event of a reinstall I just need to copy the keys over again. In fact, I’ll almost definitely reinstall minus the X server. Not so sure I need it.

And setting up mount of the NFS shares is a doddle.

                  —————————————

OK, OK. done the advanced “expand filesystem”. removed the DE, DM and xorg (I can use X forwarding for any graphical applications).

                  Are we good, now?

OK. Having fun 🙂 Got my NFS shares mounted at boot. A desktop if I need it. Connected via ssh running headless at the moment, and after an hour of trying, finally got it connected to the pulseaudio server on my main rig (three computers now all using the same audio output simultaneously). If I start the desktop, synergy will hapily let me share the mouse and keyboard again from main PC (so three computers all using the same mouse and KB, again simultaneously).

I gave blender a try on it, thinking I may be able to use it as a part of a renderfarm, but it just doesn’t seem up to it.

Now, apart from playing music when the other computers are busy, I need to decide what else to do with it. Should probably make a box for it out of a cornflakes packet, or something, too.

This is fun, though. Been a while since I had to troubleshoot a Linux distribution too much. It’s just too damned stable these days.

By copying /home to the root of /spinner (i.e. not to a directory on the spinner) bearing in mind that copy is non-destructive, and then mounting the spinner as home, any documents already on the spinner will be automatically in /home after moving.

EDIT: Although, it is likely that there are some system /home directories in /home, and so it will be necessary to move the documents up the directory tree of new home to the user home directory.

That’s easy. Format the drive and install Linux 😉

You could have still (and still could) just move home to the spinner. Copy your existing /home directory to the spinner, preserving permissions:

                            cp -ra /home /spinner/

replace spinner with the path to your spinner. (optionally you can add v to -ra for verbose copying)

Then modify /etc/fstab to mount home to the new directory

                            #Entry for /home :
                            UUID=UUID /home ext4 defaults,user_xattr,noatime 0 0

If you don’t have it formatted as ext4 you’ll need to change the type. You can get the UUID by running:

                            sudo blkid

Reboot and you should be good. To test, try renaming the original /home directory to /home.bak

Once it’s all good, you can delete /home.bak

Are you, by any chance, using a Creative audio card? I eventually pulled mine and stuck with the on board audio. Since then, no problems with all six channels (front L, C & R, Right L & R + Sub).

I’m not going to ramble on this. I voted leave, I stand by my vote, but not the way it’s being done right now, which is not even remotely representative of what I voted for.

However, the name calling has to stop. Brexiteers is equally demeaning, as are the various “are you happy now” and variations of. It’s not those who voted leave that are to blame for the current mess. It’s the unelected PM that is wholly accountable.

OK, it’s arrived. A bit fiddly to assemble (not helped by the location of the ports on the back of my monitor) but all in place now. Not much to it but you need the vesa mount on whatever you are hanging it on and assemble it around that and the monitor.

Top bezel on my monitor is 1.7 cm, and no overhang. It would probably cope with smaller quite well since the clamps can be angled.

Seems to be holding the monitor solidly enough, with no fear of it falling out (could be famous last words in the morning).

Oh, and the hydraulic arm is pretty cool, too 🙂

                                            Not a bad £35 spend.
