Well, if I could find a decent 16 port Gb all POE switch at a nice, cheap price, (they don’t all need to be POE, but for now, at least 8 do) I’d be golden :~)

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Which it isn’t. Around 70MBs. NAS and local connection between the desktop an Pi4 will benefit massively.

I’m pretty sure a couple of ports are gigabit. I just need 2 gigabit ports, one for the desktop, and one for the Pi4B as a NAS server. The Pi 3s are limited to 100Mb anyway, and the laptop wouldn’t notice if it was on dial up.

Leanne has a favourite coffee shop in the arcade [EDIT: The one with the Bowie tributes all over the walls], so I guess I’ll get in there.

For beer, my Newport pub is McCanns (even have the T-Shirt), but then rock/biker pub has always been my style, and I’m practically a local there, now.

Y’know, I guess I was asking for justification since I can’t find it myself. I may await the next gen and go for the full MB/CPU/GPU upgrade instead. No point chasing rainbows when there’s no pot of gold.

Well, bearing in mind I have 8C 16T now, and the jury is out on whether my MB supports the 3950X (though ASUS say it does), is the performance difference worth £500? That’s my dilemma, though I could, of course, sell the 1800X. £225 new, so I reckon I could get £125 for it. Still a £375 investment.

I want one. A card that boots in 6 seconds when my high (ish) end machine takes longer than that to POST sounds awesome.

As a cheap alternative, esp with USB drives, set up your NAS on a Rasberry Pi. I’ve been running one with ext4 for 2 years with no problems. You should be able to get it going with NTFS with no issues, and the advantage is, complete control.

Atheism is one of the reasons I don’t celebrate. Another is that until I stopped, you could guarantee a life changing personal disaster happening at Christmas, so I removed the source and the personal disasters stopped.

I’ve recently discovered isopropyl alcohol (99.5%), which is damned good for cleaning records, but don’t drink it. Honestly, don’t. If it tastes like it smells it won’t be pleasant.

I’m not looking forward to 27/12. That’s my next trip to Newport, and the weather is already getting bad (by which, I mean there may have been a drop of rain) which automatically means problems. It will probably be a bit chilly, too, so more delays. AND, the train ends at Cwmbran and bus the rest of the way. Should be 15 minutes, but I’m guessing an hour, on account of it will probably be dark, too.

The reason other European countries manage are most are state owned, though if it were up to me, I’d get the Japanese in. Damn, they know how to run a railway.

I have an HDMI to DP cable that I’m sure I bought from Amazon and I’m fairly sure does 60Hz.

I can’t test now, since I went back to HDMI and have no idea where I put the cable. :/

Wait: I think it was DP to HDMI rather than the other way around. Ignore me.

My digital setup is via my PC, running Linux and Pulseaudio 5:1 surround. The sound is pretty good, but as I said, digital lacks the complete dynamic range of analogue, most noticeable at the top end rather than the bottom end. Bass is easy digitally, treble less so. probably because bass is not positionable (you can put a sub anywhere in the room with no noticeable difference, but misplace the treble and you will certainly hear it)

Maybe it’s the pops and crackles that add the warmth, then. My next step is to acquire original vinyl, not re-mastered.

It’s not that there is anything wrong with my digital system, and in fact the vinyl uses the same sub and speakers, but the dynamic range of analogue compared to digital is so noticeable with this album it’s untrue.

Wow. I forgot how much more alive War of the Worlds was on Vinyl. I originally bought it on tape, then Vinyl, then CD. The tape and vinyl versions are long gone, but lo and behold, local Asda had it on Vinyl for £13 last week, so of course, I bought it. Just got around to playing it, and the CD can barely see its’ heels for dust.
