@Bob, it’s not a name I recall, but I’ll bear it in mind. Give me some clues (age, appearance etc.)
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
Dan what do you do by night.
I don a black cape and mask, and fight crime in the suburbs of Warrington, but shhhh, don’t tell anyone it’s me.
EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify. It’s more of a black coat and hat, and the crime I stop is underage drinking of real ale. I do this by drinking the real ale first so that the under aged can’t get to it.

I’m a specialist tax accountant by day.
Rental income is no different than other income in terms of taxation (e.g. salary pension self-employment etc.) and for tax purposes is simply added to other income subject to income tax (as opposed to capital gains tax, dividend tax etc.) and your liability is calculated on the total. Any tax already paid is deducted from the total due and whatever is left over is what you pay.
There are likely to be expenses that you can claim against the rental income to mitigate the taxable amount. e.g. letting agent fees, insurance, repairs replacement and renewals, possibly capital allowances. Expenses for rental purposes can only be used to reduce taxable rental income, and if expenses exceed income, a rental loss is created rather than mitigating other taxable income.
Rental losses also receive special treatment, in that they can only be carried forward and set against future profits from the same rental business (again, no reducing other taxable income).
As an aside, if you had any costs involved with the acquisition of the property (i.e. costs to you and not the estate) keep full details, since these can be used to mitigate capital gains tax on eventual sale. If you have any improvements done to the property, that represents capital expenditure which cannot be claimed against rental income, but can also be used to mitigate capital gains on eventual sale, so again, keep full details.

For information only since you are going the fresh install route, but you can repair a non-booting system with a liveCD and chrooting into the broken OS. This includes repairing GRUB.

I used to use CCleaner regularly, not just for the registry, but general crap.
Then I switched to Linux and no longer need the snake oil.

Boot the Linux Live CD, open a terminal, and type:
sudo fdisk -lsudo blkidThe first will list your drives and the second will reveal their UUIDs. With this information, you should be able to mount your C drive so that you can see what may or may not be going on.

Whether you need a will or need to obtain probate after your death depends mainly on your surviving assets. If your assets are more than £325K (including your house and all your possessions) then inheritance tax will need to be paid.
In the case of a married (or civil partnership) couple, the exemption passes to the other spouse on death, and so £650k (EDIT: Subject to the estate passing to the surviving spouse/civil partner on death). The family home will, over the next couple of years, gain a separate exemption to take estate value to £1m.
In a rented property with little real estate value (I know that feeling well, I’m one of those people worth more alive than dead) it’s just not worth the effort of a will. No inheritance tax implications, no capital gains tax implications etc. The only issues are ensuring someone has access to the remaining assets.

You don’t need a will in such circumstances, just document that you want everything to go to your daughter.
Power of Attorney is generally a living privilege (e.g. if you become incapacitated, mentally incapable etc.)
Oh, and if you make a will, your daughter will be executrix (female version)

Well, I can’t complain about Amazon. Ordered at around 9:30 last night and delivered by 9:30 this morning. Initial tests are good, the only problem being my insanely small ears, but come with ear hooks, so we’re good. The holder is also a battery bank, so can get 4 -5 full charges out of it. I’m unlikely to need more than an hour or two at a go, anyway.
Even so, Aldi. Can’t complain about their customer service in any way, shape or form. And it’s literally the first thing I’ve had to return to them, so general Kudos from me.

I may give that a go at weekend when I have time to copy off 200Gb of data to a share on my main rig before reformatting the USB drive. It would certainly give me more confidence in the filesystem than fat32 does. Thank you.

No, visudo is already6 very well setup to give my user root rights. I think the issue is more likely with the HH5, but I have no idea how to get root on that. I would have loved to set the drive up with ext4, but Fat32 is all that will work. Otherwise, I could be fine.

As an update, I popped into CeX today, and they have a verbatim 500Gb USB drive for sale for just £40, so I figured I’d give it a go. The original plan was to connect to the router, but I’ve also had a couple of beers and it didn’t work immediately, so plan B was to plug it into the Pi directly, which seems to be working. Currently migrating my music and video to it, so I guess I’ll see when I reconfigure Plex how well it will work.

I have the GS205-100UKS which for under £12 you can’t argue with, and it works a treat.

No, this was more ham-fistedness, as in I physically broke it. I forgot it was there, and it caught on the lip above the access hole in the case and snapped. Fortunately, it broke the card and not the socket. ?

If I’m going to shell out for a populated NAS, I may as well look at the Synology devices. Seem much better respected.
As a slight aside, if you get a case for a Pi, remove the SDCard before mounting it. I managed to break one 🙁
Fortunately, it wasn’t the new one, and must have been lying around doing nothing for a reason, so I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

Well, it’s academic at the moment. Th enclosure is dead. Relegated from bag of crap to the bin.
I may just shell out on a 3TB NAS including drives and have done with it.
Not to mention, my heart won’t take those scary moments after you’ve performed open heart surgery on your best rig and then it won’t boot until you fiddle a bit more for half an hour for much longer. The drive is back in it’s home, and that’s where it’s staying.

It’s been a while since I ripped a CD (though I may have to soon), but I always found slower speeds resulted in fewer errors.

I’m going to try with a USB enclosure plugged into the router. A USB pen drive is working, so next test is the 1TB drive. I have an enclosure in my bag of crap, if it still works. Downside, I need a new multiplug. Only one socket in the hallway where the router is, and the router is plugged into that. I could work around temporarily with a dual socket extension cable, but the final plan is the router, the drive and the Pi (wired to the router, rather than WiFi) together. So shopping after testing, I think, for a 4 socket cable.

Well, I have a BT homehub, and have tentatively tested a USB thumb drive on the USB port on it. After a bit of faffing with mount option, I now see it and can access it on my desktop (Arch Linux). For the moment, the media server on the Pi will still access the NFS drives from my main rig, and is updating the library, but once done, I think I have an old USB enclosure in my bag of crap, so may try the spinner on that connected to the router and see how I get on, and then work on mounting it on the Pi if it seems OK.
EDIT: Mounting the thumbdrive connected to the router was a lot simpler on the Pi. No faffing about with smb permissions etc.
As an aside, I have a second SDCard, and I’m going to give ArchARM a go and see how it performs. I have the SD Card ready to try. But again, need to wait for Plex to update first.
Oh, the heatsinks arrived and are fitted. The case is waiting for me at work (I unexpectedly had to take Friday off after spending half the night in hospital with an old (as in years old) friend collapsed whilst I was visiting him, and so the case was delivered in my absentia.
