Just a quick update, here. I had second interview on Friday 13th. Also had an interview in Cardiff with a different firm in the morning. I was a very close 2nd for the Cardiff job, but got a very good offer from Cwmbran 10 minutes after leaving.

Accepted, and the intention was to start 1 June. Then, of course, we went into lockdown.

The offer is still live with start date to be agreed (and I received the formal offer on Friday) once the world settles down a bit, and just niggling over a couple of minor issues in the contract.

So, I am going to be moving. Leanne was more nervous than me 🙂

LOL @PlaneMan. My Newport Local (a bikers/rock pub) is fine. I only mix with good people.

But thank you all. I guess I’ll have an idea how things go by Thursday afternoon. I have a Skype interview lunchtime on Thursday.

I dare say we all had moments in our youths that we would frown deeply on, now.

                  Bob,

Brighton wasn’t the only place where mods and rockers clashed. I remember it happening in Blackpool in the late 70s (I was one of the rockers), and at Belle Vue fair in Manchester (I was also on the Rocker’s team there, though it died out pretty quickly after just one of our guys stepped forward towards the pack of mods with motorcycle chains in each hand, and they ran).

Of course, I never got involved in the actual kerfuffle. I was only 15 at the time.

I can’t comment. Leanne called me on Saturday from Newport, with tales of floods and trees flying all over the place.

Meanwhile, in Warrington, I was looking at a clear blue sky and trees shifting gently in the breeze. She wasn’t happy about me pointing that out. Dunno why?

I don’t see anything on the link re the boot code – what’s changed.

The rest of it is irrelevant to me (all 5 PIs are headless and don’t have a desktop – except for my original 3B, which boots to an absolutely minimal xorg, enough to get Chromium running in kiosk mode to display a clock).

I have used the OSM importer for Blender before, though to be honest, I was dissatisfied with the results. It’s easier to simply take a screen grab and model manually from that.

OK, insane January tax deadline (not a month with a lot of free time for a tax specialist), and Leanne has been over for a few days, so not had time to work on this, but how do you like this version?

There is actually soot in the fireplace (and I spent a crap load of time building the map for it), but I may have gone overboard with the light emission from the fire and it’s simply blown out.

I’ve also spotted a problem with the normal map, so hopefully, the next render will fix. I’m gonna set it off overnight (it’s 4+ hours), so maybe tomorrow I can update.

I dunno, I cut my teeth on an IBM 1966 and later a 2966 mainframe using COBOL, and we had to leave it to the operators to run what were glorified databases overnight.

Now, I could do the same on my desktop using just SQL in seconds.

A post referencing an article by a company that specialises in defragging trying to sell defragging software for SSDs because the spinner market is shrinking, and making out that it will make a difference (think about it, no seek time on an SSD, so, ermm, yeah).
