Steve, you didn’t go M55 did you? When I was touring Wales, (usually Tenby- based), I went up or down the A470 all the way.

I know Tenby is further West, but if there are problems on the A55 it is a mess.

Richard I don’t know what Vancouver is like now, but I visited it in ’80 or ’81 (**** memory!) and it was a fascinating place. Because it is a Fraser River Delta, it is separated by many bridges and the separate islands have created different communities. I drank Molson beer in English bay and watched a TV game of Chelsea v. Spurs, eating fish and chips out of a newspaper. (a huge and delicious Pacific Cod). That was part of a tour of BC, but after 10 days of huge distances, a different Motel every night and being sick of driving a Nissan, we retired to the City. The Canadian people were very friendly and once they knew we were Brits, we got a great welcome.

The only blackspot came when my mate was challenged by armed street cops (not RCMP) to open his coat. Apparently he had a resemblance to a wanted man. After the realisation that we were not gangsters, the cops asked why I was smiling: “Because my mate is the mildest, most law-abiding guy you could meet. I’m the one with a British conviction, now off the record.” They gave us a lift to the club we wanted to visit, told the door staff we were OK. Appearances can be deceptive…

That’s why I am only taking ONE Codeine-Paracetamol in the morning, instead of the prescribed two, twice a day. I take two an hour before bed, it gets me to sleep. Currently my missus has a continual dry cough, I had to enlist daughter to make her ask an appointment. She now has an appointment to see a consultant about associated X-rays on Tuesday. Trying to stop her worrying about the results, is like trying to stop the Sun going down at night.

Prescription reviews are like buses in my part of the country. Miss one, you have a long wait to get another. Over the Bank Holiday, Stagecoach Lincs have announced they will be running a Sunday Service. Thank you very much, that means NO buses through my village until Tuesday. That service connects Lincoln – Grimsby – Cleethorpes/Louth – Mablethorpe – Skegness, missing out the Mablethorpe and Skeggy connections. Thus preventing families reliant upon public transport, from travelling to the resorts. Therefore not helping the local Tourist economy, over a period of several warm, sunny days. Hopeless.

Next week is busy: Tuesday SWMBO’s appointment. Wednesday collect new car and phone surgery to make appontments for next round of vaccinations. Thursday, up to Beverley Community Hospital to see my consultant, for a verdict on my progress. Friday our cleaner arrives to thrash the house into submission. That will be my cue to disappear somewhere.

Today my back is easier and I managed a walk, during which SWMBO could not keep up because she just had to leave her stick behind. Why are women so vain about having to give in to age and infirmity? She is defo not over the new Hip yet. Shortly I am going for my first drive since March.

Prefer the original, written and sung from the heart by Lesley Gore, who suffered a terrible time with too many men, even in her teens, before turning the other way. Sorry, Dan, but for me this is R&B ruined by an artiste who screams and shouts instead of singing.

The Blues, it ain’t. the original:

            https://youtu.be/4QEqLTbEXy0

            Dusty’s version:

            https://www.whosampled.com/Dusty-Springfield/You-Don%27t-Own-Me/

Dusty’s relationships kind of echoed Lesley’s. Both Lesley Gore and Dusty had a real singing voice and didn’t need to scream the lyrics. Apologies if that offends you, but music is an individual choice.

The flyout panel is not a big problem for me, I think its usefulness outweighs any slight irritation.

I see I am climbing the Board again. My heap of BS is bigger and smellier than yours Dan!?? (Would wave Willy if I could find it!)

That echoes the part-time lady GP at ours. She is actually the one who spotted my prostate problem, sorted out CT & MRI scans which led to the discovery of the pancreas growth. Now the prostate has settled down to 2 pees nightly!

But all the GP’s at our surgery are good and effective. I think the big difference is that they work together. A friend from Dispensary tells me that they have regular meetings after hours, to discuss patients “at risk”. Apperently I am regularly on that list, which is very comforting. I think….?

Looks a good system Nolan. It is encouraging how some surgeries are taking their own paths and becoming slightly independent of the main NHS.

Memories of visiting Brugge in 2000, about 7 months after the currency was introduced across the EU. We took € Travellers’ Cheques and discovered that one of the best hotels in Brugge was not yet set up to deal with it! ? The receptionist called the manager, who advised us to change them at a local bank, “We prefer Sterling anyway, and you should make a small profit: the € is still weak against the £”. He was right, but a discovered inefficiency was not hopeful for the future. Many of my German friends were not happy with the Southern European nation members joining the €: they saw it as Germany, the UK and France eventually having to support those nations. Not altogether wrong, were they?

That’s not a Brexit viewpoint: I voted Remain. And we eventually had our own currency worries, didn’t we?

Thanks for the warning though John. If I ever manage a European holiday again, I will take my own wheels. If. In my time I have driven Europe in many types of vehicle, in RHD and LHD, so it would not worry me. While I am sat in a driving seat, I’m fine. It’s getting out and getting everything back into Firing Order, that is the problem! ??

Just received a letter from Hull Royal Infirmary, asking me to fix an appointment up there for a Dietitian. By a happy coincidence, my GP called to give me my Blood results* shortly after I read the letter. I was able to ask him about that: “Get the letter to me today by 6 pm and I will find you a dietitian here, you don’t want to drive through the centre of that mad city!” (his words) Daughter is picking up the letter for me a little later. I discussed several more things with my GP: he is good to talk to and lays everything out in layman’s language, carefully because his English is improving, but still a bit unclear at times. One issue was his precription for Codeine-Phosphate with Paracetamol. I had checked the side effects and found that the GP should be aware of issues with enlarged prostate problems. He cleared it and said that ‘your prostate is steady-state’ with a smile in his voice.

Our surgery will not text, they prefer email or a call-back, and they do keep their promises, IME. Example: this morning, before the GP’s call, I had queried the side effects with dispensary. Later, they called to ask if the GP had cleared it. A double-check, which impressed me. It appears that, after the merger of two surgeries into one (rather, ours took over the smaller) it has all become more efficient, although now twice as busy. I suspect that the increase in staff numbers has given the surgery space and time. Appointments are initially by a call-back, then an appointment at surgery if necessary. Future appointments can be made on the website, it really is a working system. The only problem is parking, as builders are extending both surgery and parking, but half the original car park is closed off for the work.

*To my relief, all my bloods are “normal” with no problems. The GP even picked up my balanced, high protein diet and complimented me on it. I passed that to my OH. ??

Well now I have had severe lower back pain for the last 3 days. This is restricting my movement and hampering recovery from the Op, which has been going well, until my walks have now stopped. The very long incision is now so healed that I have no dressings any more and all I have is an itch at one end. GP has had a look, says it’s a spasm and has given me Codeine with Paracetamol Tablets to relax it. He carefully explained side effects to look for and says he will reduce the dose if necessary. I really like this Doc, he takes great care to let his patient know exactly what is happening and how to handle issues.

As a correction to an earlier description of damage, “…body looks like a roadmap…” It now looks like a roadmap of the Lincolnshire Wolds, with lots of new relief features. ??  I have lost almost 2 stones, but am eating well (smaller portions) and healthily. I have completely given up cake, biscuits, crisps and chocolate and no longer feel the appetite for them. Bonus.

In myself, I feel much better.

My mam was like your dad! As a kid, about 9 or 10, she dragged me to a Mansfield shoe shop to return the shoes that had broken a heel after one day’s wear. The manager got shirty: “You can have a Credit Note madam.” The result was a loud explosion from a 5foot tall redhead with a hair trigger temper. People were leaving the shop as mam held up the shoes – LOOK! Worn the ONE DAY! ONE ******* DAY!” Thirty B****y Shillings* for one day’s wear! My husband does not work his tail off down the pit for s*** like this on my feet.”

She got her money back from a terrified salesman, who now knew how my whole family falt when mam took the Warpath.

*Thirty shillings (£1.50) was a lot of money in ’54 or ’55.

I met the local Sodexo* boss some time ago at a Residents’ meeting. This company has so many fingers in its multinational pies, and has taken over facilities at an NHS hospital. Cannot recall which one, but he used it as an example. Tradesmen attached to the hospital who did nothing and knew nothing: unqualified builders and electricians, etc., who knew nothing about their trades and were protected by the Unions. In the end, Sodexo’s lawyers managed to use EU and UK law to remove them as dangerous and having to have their shoddy “work” redone by contractors. Cue howls of union protest.

In the last 3 days I have developed a painful lower spine problem, which is preventing me walking out. I don’t know how many more obstacles I can find in my path, would kick the buggas out of my path if my legs would work. ??

Topping that, today I attended surgery for the 3 injections posted by my consultant. I had one: the nurse practitioner (30+ years’ service) picked up that the 2 & 3 Dual injections are listed as only for children under 2 yo. She sent me home with the one, and worked behind the scenes to find out what was going on. Now I need FOUR injections at a time, over the next 6 to 12 weeks. “That should complete the job”.

                              Well that’s Plan B. Or C. I’ve lost count.

That’s exactly how to do it Nolan. Years ago when my old place sold cars, I hated buyers like you! ??

Bob, I was surprised that being in the trade he was not prepared or able to take on, or know someone who could take on the chassis work.

Richard, my old boss was almost entirely without patience and forethought. He entered a 3-Way partnership after Miners’ Strike left us short of funds, to set up a Hire business. I begged him not to go with one guy, who was known to me through trade friends. Sure enough, the ratbag left with most of a year’s profits and the other made an offer for the Hire Stock, then took it away. The hire funding kept us afloat and I convinced the boss to stay with ‘bread & butter’ MOT tests, repairs and maintenance, plus Classics imports and rebuilds, which had begun the promise of making serious money.

On a holiday in Devon, doing my “off the beaten track” routine, I made a wrong turn and had to ask a Farmer directions. I noticed a shape under a tarpaulin in the barn and asked questions. It was a ’53 Chevvy Corvette droptop with just 3.000+ on the clock, damage to the nearside but repairable. Apparently his son had been thrown clear and died: his dad wanted to get rid of it but was loath to do so. I said I could possibly have it bought and removed to Nottinghamshire, miles away, and he asked a fair price. I phoned my boss from the B&B we stayed at, but he would not help me buy it. Those cars even then (early 80’s) were worth big money: nowadays, a good condition ’53 model would fetch fantastic money at a top end auction.

But the Daimler chassis was really gone: he left it in a draughty, unheated shed for too many years.

And I was right about Classics: the more profit we made, the better the cars we could import. Californian containers kept arriving at the garage! We had a great name for Classsic rebuilds. I still see some that I worked on at Shows today – “Do you have all the MOT’s?” – “Yes.” My name has been present on many invoices and old-style MOT certificates. Conversation ice – breaker!

I once suggested a system remarkably like the one Bob saw today when talking with a group of nurses. The idea of a see through uniform would have gone down better – and NO I did not suggest that or anything like that

Maybe cause a few heart attacks, but certainly cheer up the male patients, Richard. ?? Possibly a certain type of female patient – ooops – sorry!

Completely agree John, but have never had a ‘hiccup’ with Kaspersky Safe Money. I use Firefox (just updated to 59.0.3) and Private Browsing, with the Kaspersky Safe Money inside that. Whilst I have been in recovery at home, there is no way I could have got into branch. According to family members and TSB customers, our normally quiet Louth branch has been thronged anyway during the problems. I was able to prove our account is OK online, which relieved us of worry.

That’s interesting Ryan, and fits with most of the NHS documentation that I (eventually) receive. Those that are not completely forgotten to be despatched, that is. As an aside: today a District Nurse came to take my bloods, 1 day short of a week overdue. A very efficient young lady, with a nice new Dell netbook on which she recorded everything. She maintains that the local Nursing team elected to set up their own latest Win 10 system and everything goes to their own server. They then try to send to the rest of the NHS after collating everything at their own base, but mostly have to print and send paper copies. She was obviously IT competent and clearly very frustrated with all the “Steam” parts of the process. Which tallies with your ‘broken system’ statement.

Regarding the energy company you worked for: I have been with EDF for almost 6 years now and I have seen them become more and more efficient and demonstrate increasingly better IT performance with time. The website is a model for others, including a responsive Chatline. I can send a Meter Reading and receive a current bill, all within 24 hours. Last week I switched to a cheaper tariff within an hour. IMO, that represents a company constantly evolving its technological services for the 21st. century.

Apart from the Fun factor, I think there is the point that some contributors have less time to dawdle here than others, with work and family commitments. Not so this particular Oldphart, who can spend half a day here if not reminded that there is a world out there. ???
