In every Lincolnshire hospital is a service called PALS (think that’s Patient Action Line) staffed by retired vounteers, many are ex-nurses and some ex-admin. When Grimsby lost my SWMBO’s extensive notes and made no effort to find them, I contacted them: they were suddenly found!

Steve, the insurance companies are getting shirty about things now. Mate of mine last year was refused repayment because he had forgotten to add another medical condition. That’s why I was with StaySure, they take all conditions onboard and get back with a texted quote. I always make them send a written quote before I say OK to a quote though. We have not been away for 2 years now, but I have so much happening that we are looking forward to some kind of cottage holiday later. But Status are a specialist in Medical travel insurance. If I needed a hospital on holiday, my Gert does not drive, so we would be snookered.

My bank does not do travel, but my mate’s did: and that was Nationwide, who refused payment. I would love to go to the continent, preferably Brugge (or Bruges if you like the French version) as we really like that town, it’s medieaval but the house owners have to keep up all the deco and the apearance of the buildings, by City Law. Food is very good too, and the Belgian coast is close enough to visit every day. I like a place called Knokke*, which is the cleanest seaside town I ever saw. Makes Skeggy look like an Iranian camp in Syria, after the Israelis finished with it. SWMBO and I shared a very nice whole roast chicken in the Market Place there one sunny day: don’t think some of the more toffee-nosed locals thought much of that, but several young people guessed we were Brits and stopped to talk.

We do have so many beaches around here though, so when it’s good weather we can get out and be back home for evening. I don’t think we miss a holiday as much as when we lived in Notts.

        *Ka-nocker. Funny speech, these foreigners.

I know that situation well Richard, I always say that the NHS is staffed by by caring medical personnel and 90% administration that doesn’t give a damn. I once had to wait 20 minutes for a “clerical” person to action sending for the right documents, after seeing the wrong name on mine. I eventually went to the desk and loudly demanded that she made the call or fetch them herself.

Funnily enough, I smoked very little actually in Army service, because I was running a lot. Had I done 300 a week then, I would have collapsed after 100 yards! It was after I left that I really started to increase my ciggy consumption. A lot of that was down to what I realise now was depression, caused by losing a family, going back to live with my parents and caring for them for so long. I also worked for the first 5 years, for the worst barsteward of a boss you could imagine, cuminating in knocking out his son and leaving to run a workshop for an old mate.

I never understood how lonely and down I had been, until I met my SWMBO and had an instant family that became my own.

Today I went to see my consultant, to receive good news and bad news.

Good news: all of the nasties on my pancreas were gone with the tail being removed. Bad news: it was cancer and it is now in one of my 11 abdominal Lymph Nodes. That is the reason for an Oncology appointment at Grimsby hospital and I will get Chemotherapy.

I feel so much better in physical health terms, though.

                  Another battle ahead.

Lee, I would have more trouble getting in and out of a Lambo than the Tucson! Actually, there was a new Carer for my neighbour last year with a Mazda MX. I tried to stop her hitting the curb, she took no notice and damaged the front. Because she parked so badly, at an angle, the damage was even worse. She got out in a temper, I told her that she ignored my warnings and paid the price of bad parking and arrogance. Never saw her again, but received a letter from my landlord asking about the incident. Apprently she tried to sue them: gave my witness statement, got a thank you letter later when her case was thrown out.

Richard, the i20X has 125 BHP and is quick, even for an auto. The manual has a 6-speed box, but the car may be too small for your needs. I am surprised at the attitude of the dealership: Hyundai Read Grimsby is nothing like that, customers are treated very well.

                        Breaking into this Thread JB:

Some time ago I said that I knew of a good travel insurance site, for medical problems, I just found it again:

                        http://tinyurl.com/yaz2xulz

Collect all your medical conditions, tell them what they are over the phone number and they will come back with a quote, ask them to send you a written quote to your address. They never let me down, but I always do that with any quotes from anywhere, then you have proof. They are fairly inexpensive for UK travel, obviously a bit more for abroad.

                        Hope that helps, cheers, Bob.

Not going to preach, but until about 40 years ago I was getting through 300 a week, most weeks. I believe that service in HMF contributed to that, we all smoked and were in fact given coupons (by government!) to buy at reduced prices from the NAAFI, in Germany and other areas overseas. i used to reach for a smoke before I opened my eyes to wake up. That is probably one reason for Steve’s intake of 40 a day roll-ups, it was always seen as macho to smoke in HMF.

What stopped me was working over an engine block I had just scraped, flatted, checked, cleaned and made ready for a new cylinder head gasket and the head, to be fitted. I coughed so much that I was sick onto my work, which I had to do again. I booted an Embassy packet, at least half-full, across thr workshop and swore I had smoked my last fag. A workmate challenged me and said I would never do it. Which is exactly what not to say to me, it made me more determined. Every day this pillock offered me a ciggy from the pack. After 7 weeks he gave up and said he would smoke them. No you won’t I said, give them here: and stomped the pack into oblivion before throwing them into the heater.

Never felt the need to smoke again and I missed the Vaping crap by a generation and a half. Meditation is my relaxing agent.

Hoping your last paragraph is the correct version Richard. I really feel so much better now, if only this lower back spasm would settle down. Always ready to face another setback, but not needing one!

The sunshine helps of course. Drove the Tucson north up the A16 to swop for a new i20X today. The A16 is what passes for a major south to north artery in our part of the world: single carriageway all the way from Boston to Grimsby, carries European freight from the Humber docks. Today we saw the result of a £17 million government grant* to our Lincolnshire Highways: at least 10 miles of Convoyed, one-way traffic as whole stretches were resurfaced and GRRRRRitted (!) It took me at least an extra 45 minutes to travel 20 miles, some stretches at 10 MPH. We then went up to Cleethorpes, just a few miles further north. On return, I diverted East across the A1031 Coast Road, perhaps adding another 8 miles but the journey was much shorter in time, took us through beautiful countryside and I know all the shortcuts through country lanes.

*The benefits of having an MP who is a rising star and a favourite of our PM and her predecessor. Watch for the name Victoria Atkins, I believe she may continue to rise. TBH, you could stick a blue rosette on a horse around here and it would stand a good chance of election. Come to think of it, a view of the benches in Westminster might make one believe that scenario has already taken place.?

Yes Richard and the growth is more evident amongst the weed population! Be glad when my lady gardener comes, neither of us can get down in the dirt anymore.

Today it’s a bit cooler at 19°, thanks to the offshore breezes. In about 15 minutes I am off to collect the new Motability car, so it’s off with the shorts and into trousers.

By way of something different, I have an appointment at Grimsby hospital with an new consultant: Oncology. Mystified as to why and a bit concerned, but it’s a trip out and probably another coastal excursion.

Started off at 19°C here this morning. Went all the way to 25°C and is now slowing down to 23°C. Been out for SWMBO’s consultation with her Hip Mechanic and shopping, but SWMBO is laid out by a combination of disbelief at being reminded (once again) that it takes as long as 12 months to fully recover from her Op, and heat. I love it and start removing layers and wearing shorts, she will not do that. I also wear a natty hat to protect my solar panel, she won’t do that either. ( although she has no shortage of hair)

We have now had almost a week of great weather, and the farmers are grateful, as all the wet stuff was a worry for them about their crops. Bloody Yellow Menace (rape seed plants) is all over the place and about 4 feet high, I can taste the stuff driving about.

Enjoyed yesterday, as in my other Thread. Tomorrow I pick up the new car, the Hyundai i20X. Idea is to fill up and head for the Northeast Lincolnshire horizon, AKA Cleethorpes, which will be not as packed with grockles after the Bank Holiday is history. Thursday up to Beverley, E. Yorks, to see my consultant for a rearranged, earlier appointment. Probably then head for the E. Yorks coast and Hornsea or Withernsea. I will really miss the Tucson, which has been the most comfortable drive we have ever had, but we struggle to get in it and SWMBO has to do a sort of controlled crash to get out. Sometimes I even stop giggling and help her up.??

I don’t like to waste the good weather and I am determined to get out and about.

I enjoyed that portion of the book Steve, but I have no wish to buy it. Two reasons: 1) – there was quite enough to think about in just that bit. 2) – I like to allow for a little bit of magic in my life, and coincidence, to me, is one of those little bits of magic. I don’t want to have everything possible given an explanation. Physical laws are one thing, but dissecting every little bit of everyday life, is another.

Now here’s a bit of serendipity, a happy bit of magic which actually caused me real anxiety at first.

Late last year, I had what looked like a severe Prostate problem. My ding a ling bled and it scared me to death. I saw a lady GP who sent me for CT and MRI scans. The bleeding stopped, but infrequent demands from my bladder did not. The scans found that the Prostate had stopped bleeding, just settled for being enlarged and was OK, no cancer or any other growths. Big relief: and then my GP sent for me, having made an appointment to see another consultant. The scans had shown a growth on the tail of my pancreas, which led to the recent Op. Point being, without the prostate problem, scary as it was, the malignant pancreas growth would have continued and the probability is that I would at some point in the next year, be dead from very painful Pancreatic Cancer. Deep breath, carry on….

Do you believe in Doppelgangers, the fact that somewhere there is another person who looks like you? No, neither did I, until I started Air Tech training in the AAC. Came out of my block one fine Saturday morning and met some of the new intake in the next block. There was a guy who looked just like me, I mean just like me, a mirror image. He was even my height to the inch. None of my mates, or his mates, could believe it. We had a conversation and discovered that he had a totally different family name and ancestral background. We also discovered that we didn’t really like each other! Fortunately, he failed the course within a month and disappeared back into REME, probably to be a Vehicle Mechanic or some othe Trade. It seems that his personality was completely unlike my own: I believe I am an optimistic extrovert, interested in everything and everybody. He was a right surly, miserable bugga who rarely talked to his own intake, none of whom appeared to like him either.

                                    Such is life!

Maybe my granddad had a very good bike. ? maybe his grandma was – well, you get the picture.??

Richard, to polish plasic lenses you need the stuff that we in the AAC and RAF used on canopies and helicopter windscreens. Goddard’s plastic polish:

                                      http://tinyurl.com/y7zwzaom

The worst two a/c to polish were the Sioux:

                                      And the Alouette:

Just think about going over all those ‘bubbles’ with several soft cloths and a bottle of polish. It took hours and wore fingers down. None of us wanted that job, so they put it on a Rota. I workedout when my turn was due and managed to put in for a handy Course. Eventually I had to take a turn or two. Don’t know how you can source this stuff in Civvy Street, but it would be useful to know some serving RAF/AAC technicians!

I have carried out similar conversions in the distant past, but as an ex-grease monkey, I was absorbed by the work. I will follow Edd’s YT’s as and when I can.

The Golf GTi was first of course although the French tried to follow with the Peugeot 205 GTi, the Mk1 version being a total death trap IMO: we recovered so many of these on their roofs and sides, and so many, mostly young, drivers injured. One was a Fatal, having hit a tree and a lamp post on the way into a field, where it was found on its roof, which had collapsed into the body. The Golf/Rabbit was considerably safer. I see from the rear badges that the Golf in the video was a Rabbit, which was the version for the US market.

                                        Cheers, Bob.

I think both Edd and Mike are honest about what they do, but Edd comes across sometimes as so enthusiastic, he sounds a bit naive. Having watched all his old stuff more than once, I will be looking at his new venture. As an ex-workshop foreman of a business that worked on lots of Classics, I enjoy the mechanical work side of the shows very much and can appreciate that Edd is a very good mechanic/technician, with a wide knowledge and experience. I often found myself thinking “You will probably do THIS next, Edd“. It was gratifying when he did, because, like Edd, I was the kind of mech who would think on my feet to solve a problem, by any means available.

I knew he would be back in one way or another.

Yesterday I had a good walk but had to turn back when SWMBO’s new hip stiffened up. Then I had my first drive in the Tucson since April 2nd and up to the carwash: first since January I think. Today, drove to a Garden Centre 8 miles away, had a Carvery*, then a long walk around the Centre, choosing Roses (me) and Geraniums (SWMBO) for when the garden is finally finished. Then a long, circular drive to Mablethorpe and back home. It feels so good to get behind the wheel again, even if we struggle until we get the new car on Weds. But it’s even better to walk again, even at 2 mph! Thought I would get away without some diesel, but had to put about £15 in. Must remember the new car is Petrol, must remember the new car is … well, you get the picture!

Now I know I’m getting better, slowly but surely.

Best Carvery in the area, Sundays & Wednesdays. On other days, the meals are just as good. Large, airy restaurant, miles of indoor garden stuff and a big Garden Centre. What’s not to like? Oh: and very good ice cream!
