John I am about to start Chemo, after a Pre – Assessment on Thursday I will have a date for that next week.

At all our Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire hospitals, and many others I know of, patients having cancer treatment get free parking after registering at pre-assessment. I think you should look that up with the people on the ward your partner is with for her radio therapy. Check the website carefully.

Take a look at her mum on the left, Dwynne:

My dad’s advice about girls was, “If you want to know what they look like in 10 or 20 years, look at their mothers.”

Just how bored is Harry here?

France v. Italy is a standout for me. The Italians will be hurting after not making it to Russia and France have a very good team. There are so many names being promoted to fill the Italian national manager’s position, but atm it seems that Roberto Mancini may have taken over from caretaker manager Luigi di Baggio. Or not: take your pick. Italy have one of the most successful World Cup records, it will seem strange not to see the Azzuri in Russia. I expect the Italians to do what they usually do when undergoing one of their (many) crises and catastrophes: provide a shock and beat France.

I shall record and/or watch some of those, thanks for the list Lee. I think Nigeria are capable of giving England a harder test than expected.

Well at least they both seem to actually like the round ball game. What I liked about the FA Cup Final, was that the presentation was given to Ray Wilkins’ widow: a nice touch. What I liked about the Royal wedding, was that I didn’t see it. What I didn’t like about the Royal Wedding, is all the continuing stories featured in the media. The BBC website has about a dozen separate stories, all of which say the same krap.

But I have to agree that Harry is not a bad bloke. I just feel sorry for him, waking up one morning in a few years’ time and wondering who this middle-aged bird is lying next to him.

                Another update:

Today my son was showing his Stationary Engines at Woodhall Spa Agricultural Show, where the 617 Dam Buster’s Squadron was once based. Massive grassed showground, lots of tractors, trucks, classic cars again, loads of food stalls and tents serving all kinds of food and drink. Lots of family attractions. Problem was that it was a long walk to my son’s engines, but I managed it quite well, although the uneven ground tested SWMBO’s new hip. I had the world’s second biggest Lincolnshire sausage Hot Dog* and spoke to some different Classics owners. Two elderly ladies had a very rare Triumph Herald 2-seater fastback. I complimented them on its condition, to which one replied “But we don’t do the mechanical stuff, do we  dear?”  To which her companion said, “No that’s your long-suffering grandson!” At which they both chortled.

Then the second one said “No, we just stripped the body and painted it, do you like it?” I was nonplussed, then her companion said “Oh I didn’t mind spraying the primer, but by the time the last coat of body paint went on, I was ready for a cuppa!”

I complimented them on the paintwork: it really was good, no ripples, no pimples, no orange peel. Then I wandered away, musing over the meaning of the Feminist movement.

But I must have covered a couple of miles around the Show, I will sleep well tonight. Feeling fitter every day, but must order some new trousers. Luckily it was warm enough for my shorts today. Not a pretty sight…

*The biggest I ever found was in Vancouver, for 50 cents in ’81. Having almost run out of funds but staying in a Motel on vouchers, my mate and I lived on those for the last 3 days. We had seconds on the Lufthansa airline steaks, on the way home.

Germany is actually still mining Lignite from open cast works. This is of course part of the two-faced EU Directives and warnings for the UK about pollution here.

My dad was born in Burslem, mother town of the Potteries and where the industry began, with coal mined from local North Staffordshire pits, China Clay and iron all initially from other local sources. The town was in a deep valley and the surrounding Potteries towns in the Stoke on Trent conurbation, all have to descend a steep hill to enter the town. The photo shows what it was like to live and work there for my granddad and the 8 out of his 13 surviving children, who grew up there. My dad had Ricketts (lack of sunshine & Vitamin D) and all 3 of his sons inherited it in some form. Big brother wore leg irons to around 8 years of age, as did I. Middle brother’s legs were bowed. Pic is of Burslem in 1920’s, family lived somewhere in there on St. John Street.

In 1926 my parents married, in the middle of the General Strike. Dad walked with his brother, my uncle Jack, to a new pit opened by Lord Newstead, in the village of Blidworth* Notts, which is where I grew up. The village pit was high on one of the 3 hills, but we lived at the bottom of the valley. Growing up in the 40’s to the 70’s, in an NCB estate, meant coal fires in at least 2 rooms and coal fired cooking. Down in the valley, it was not too bad, as in the early decades the miners’ coal allowance came from the local pit and Blidworth pit had hard coal from a very deep seam. Then the NCB had a brainwave and decided to have a “Coal Pool” system, which meant transporting each pit’s share of the allowance to a central depot, then trucking it out to each village. The logistics and economics of this change, tell you all you need to know about the administration of the NCB.

Entering the Dale where we lived, from any one of 3 hills and 3 roads on a winters’ day, showed a haze of smoke over the village. But the worst days were the wash days: miners’ wives became adept at watching for wind direction on the morning of Wash day! If the wind blew from the south, SE or SW, the pit boiler chimneys, and all the house chimneys behind our house, would send smuts and smoke all over the washing. I learned some choice language at an early age from my mother…

Probably because of his early life, my dad would walk miles in the country around the village, often taking me with him. It’s from dad that I got my love of the countryside and we both learned about local fauna and flora, by observing, then going to the library to look up what we saw. It’s where I learned to “talk” with birds such as Thrushes and Blackbirds, by whistling back to them. Since I got my new hearing aids and can hear the little feathered buggas again, here in my Lincolnshire village, I have taken this up again. Some neighbours are convinced that I am losing it, others actually come out to listen. I don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks, I just love doing it.

*Ironically, in the 60’s and 70’s, Blidworth was called ‘Smoky Town’ by truckers who drove through it. Incidentally, the word “Pothole” comes from the holes dug in the horrible roads of 18th century North Staffs, to obtain China Clay. Josiah Wedgewood lost so much of his produce to broken cartwheels, that he helped finance the Etruria Canal, a link to the Trent & Mersey. He built a Canal Port at Etruria, to take his pots to Liverpool and out to the world.

                  Another history lesson, guys!

We all ‘support them’ Dwynne, just not in the way you mean!

I am a Republican. Did you know that Oliver Cromwell’s grandfather was a Williams? Olly’s dad changed the family name in honour of Thomas Cromwell, chief minister to Henry VIII and architect of the Reformation. Of course in the end, Olly went too far, but a British Republic would be real democracy, IMO. No more Sovereigns, no more Lords and Ladies, dukes, etc. And a proper, elected Upper House instead of all those oldpharts in the Lords, mostly asleep and in their dotage.

                        Don’t think I’m off topic yet…

I’m just a Country Boy, Lee.??

But it was a poor game, a bit better after the second part of the second half. United tried everything to get through, but nobody coaches defences like an Italian coach, and the Chelsea defence was magnificent. I agree about Phil Jones, he belongs to the old style of England defenders: big, clattering centre backs who need a couple of minutes to turn, by which time he is chasing the opposition. Result as we saw, was a foul and a penalty. Contrast him with Gary Cahill and John Stones, who are confident with the ball and play it out of defence, instead of lumping it upfield or heading it aimlessly forwards, usually to be picked up by the opposition. Once Chelsea scored, there was only one winner, and they could have had more, with those quick breaks out of defence.

Mourinho just ran out of ideas. United need a good, modern coach. They have enough talented players, just not coached properly. The Special One has been caught by progress.

We went for a long walk around the beautiful scenery surrounding our village. Not a cloud in the sky, a nice, soft, cool breeze blowing. It brings so many benefits, walking among the green, empty countryside with the far Lincolnshire horizons shading off into the blue Wolds, breathing country air and listening to so many different bird songs. If there really is a Heaven, I would like it to be just like that.

Man U v Chelsea. Should be a good match but I will not be putting the TV on until it starts today. Don’t want to watch the other rubbish today.

Know exactly what you mean, Lee. Thought I would watch some You Tube stuff, what was I faced with? – “Watch the Royal Wedding live on You Tube” ! ??

Why would I want to do that, when it is on every other channel on the box? Roll on, 5 pm, until then I will watch some old Forest matches and some comedy YT shorts. Missus says that the Guest List is stuffed with people like George Clooney and the Beckhams, which confirms my opinion of the Royals today: just another bunch of over privileged, over paid celebs.

I think the match will be close, unless Conte gets his tactics wrong again. If he goes defensive, Mourinho will soon react and change formation to attack, that’s what he does best, thinks on his feet. Conte has that rigid Italian defensive tactic, which is why a lot of Chelsea fans will not be sorry to see him go. Bit difficult to predict, but I am going for a Man U win by 2 – 1.

Ditto Qatar, most countries (ours included) do some very nasty sub-rosa things. On the world ranking scale of doing the nasties the US is up there along with Russia, while Qatar, Turkey Saudi Arabia etc fund and/or aid ISIS, and in many ways are much worse. Of course Israel also ranks pretty high on doing nasty things in public view. I think if you decided to only go to ‘clean’ countries you would have a very short list of only New Zealand plus Scandinavian countries.

Absolutely correct! The UK is not as blameless as may be believed in that regard. Witness the Windrush episodes and the way government is turning and twisting, trying to avoid responsibility. Misguided, inaccurate political speeches and certain media pressure during the Brexit furore, have led to well-behaved, hard-working people from other countries who have been resident here for years in some cases, being assaulted and spat at in the streets.

Dwynne, this was a Thread based upon the Round Ball game, I hesitate to criticise your comment but I feel it was somewhat misplaced.

Boris is right JB: somewhere on the phone charger, will be stamped or labelled information (probably tiny script, might need a magnifier) giving the ratings in Volts & Milli amps. Somewhere in the User Guide for the shaver, or stamped/labbeled on its body, will be the same information. Examples:

                                      My phone charger –

                                      My razor/body hair trimmer –

Click on each photo to enlarge if you need to, but some information  (as in the phone charger) is really tiny. Might be easier to photograph the info you can’t read, then blow it up in Google Photos.

Steve, that sums up my own attitude to football. I will watch almost any game: if I am passing the local Leisure Centre and there’s a game on, if I have time, I park up and watch. I also find some good games on “Freeport” on Freesat, one of the high-number channels. Quite a lot of Spanish, Portuguese and South American football on there.

??Club “enemies”? – Derby ***** County No.1, Man U of course. Local clubs Notre County and Mansfield are often visited by Forest fans who can’t afford away games, but need a “Footy Fix” every Saturday.?

Thank you Ryan, very useful information, if a bit worrying! But helpful.

Lol, my wife doesn’t come here. This is my place to vent. It’s the modern take on the Bar. It’s like one big support group. ?

A big Amen to that, Steve!??

John, many thanks for those informative posts. I have printed out your words and downloaded the information. Information is key, when it comes to this stuff, I’m sure you will agree. I have read the information you gave, it’s a big help, and will wade through the PDF. In my case, my spleen was too far gone and had to be removed as a probable source of spreading cells. that means that I will be taking certain drugs for the rest of my life and having vaccinations for a few weeks, but as you say, just part of life.

Regarding cannulas and veins: I had loads of those during hospital recovery. At one time, two in my right arm, one in my left, another in my left hand and another big one in my neck, with a feed tube down my nose and throat. The one in my neck is the only one to have left  (fading) marks, but they would not shave my neck before jamming the thing in, and I am one hairy Neanderthal, so the dressing kept coming loose and disturbing that one, which had anything up to 3 different feeds at any one time. Getting to sleep, forget it with that lot hanging from my bod! My arms recovered well: just yesterday I had 4x vials of blood taken and the mark is almost gone. I had to ask that they use my right arm, as for some reason the veins in my left are difficult to get a line in. “Human dartboard” – dead right John!

I hope you recover from your own troubles, all the best.

                                            Cheers mate, Bob.
