That was the best game of the WC for me so far. I felt really sorry for Japan, they played so well. First half, they tore Belgium apart with their incisive passing and fast runs. I think we will see more of Japan at tournaments in the future. They have been getting better and better.

As an uncle to a total of 10 nephews and nieces, I can relate. Their dads, my brothers, were 15 and 17 years older than me, so they were closer to me in ages really. No such doodads in cars then, but I always fitted a top range stereo and impressed them with music. I had a fair few decent motors too, including a Ford Capri 3.1RS and a Vauxhall 2.3 Droop snoot Firenza, both of which which blew them away: dad’s family motor just did not compete. The eldest ones were just a few years behind me and shared my musical tastes, so their dads were often viewed as boring, because both my brothers were jazz fans, born 1928 and 1930. They became more like kid brothers and sisters than nephews and nieces, I suppose. Still get on well with them today, eldest survivor is 67. Only have 2 nephews left out of 4 now though. That saddens me, no uncle should outlive his nephews, seems unfair.

Condensed milk was used on exercise in Army camp kitchens to make massive amounts of tea in huge urns. It was usually a colour between khaki and orange, had vast amounts of sugar and tasted absolutely vile, but if it was hot we drank it. Carnation is Evaporated milk, which my FIL used to call “Exasperated milk”.

The only meat pies I eat are either made by by my Gert, or are from the local butcher. His Steak or S&K pies are delicious. I also recall my old mam’s meat and potato pies, which were made with layers of thinly sliced lean beef and thinly sliced, half fried potato, interspersed with veg and mushrooms, with mam’s special thick beef gravy on top. My Romany gran taught her how to make that.

If I hadn’t just had lamb chop with a bucket of salad and buttered Jersey spuds, I would be drooling now.

EDIT: remember Lenny Henry’s condensed milk sandwiches?

Something may be loose on the caliper, pins or pad. Might be the backing plate, which tends to rust in places, break or bend a bit and contact the disc or inside of the wheel.

Having to squirt WD 40 on the fan belt is wrong, John. Replace the belt if it happens again.

Hopefully the water pump is OK: that’s a bitch on those OHV Ka’s. Wheelarch and an engine mounting have to come out.

Quite right Richard, I should have thought of that, all my years in the trade! ? A simple adjustment of the fan belt is enough, unless the belt is worn and/or so highly polished that it slips. In which case a new belt should be cheap enough.

The first home that the current Mrs. W and myself shared, was an ex-NCB estate home, newly taken over by a new Community Housing Association. Single glazed windows, coal fires, much like the one in which I grew up in, unchanged for decades. The winter of ’90 or ’91 (can’t recall which) was a really bad time: heavy snow cut the village off for days, accompanied by deep frosts. The power  failed for 3 days and we had no way to cook except by a small calor gas ring and the saucepans we had, which were newly bought. The oven that had been in for decades, had been removed by the previous occupant and replaced by a temporarily useless electric oven. I knew that I had made a very good choice of lady, when I came home after overtime from the workshop and Recoveries in the snow, wet through and cold, to find that my SWMBO had knocked up a full beef dinner, complete with veg and dessert,  on the coal fire and the calor ring. Have to say here that my Gert had also been to work, having done a full day as a PA to 3 bosses in a furniture factory.

Unfortunately the saucepans were now ruined, being made to use on a gas or electric oven. Shortly after this, we bought and modernised another NCB house, with GCH and electric cooker, but we also bought a full camping oven, with a large calor gas bottle: just in case! We also bought a set of stainless steel pans and steamer tower from Boots and they are still with us, still in very good condition and used almost daily.

Early struggles we had aplenty, but it just made us stronger.

That proves that it is not the power steering pump, John. Eliminating causes is half the battle. Does the screeching happen when you are braking? Another cause could be the clutch release bearing, which happens unpredictably. For my money, it’s the pads, if it didn’t happen until after new pads were fitted. Might be something loose, or might be that they didn’t grease the back of the pads, or the pins. If it is the brake pads, metal-to-metal gives that screech. Had the same thing with a mate who changed his own pads and didn’t know that they were supposed to be greased.

Twice during Army service I had to drive an Eager Beaver from north Germany to Bavaria in the south, for the annual exercise my unit carried out with the Bundeswehr Alpini troops. Eager Beaver:

What happens when you overload it:

I took 2 days to get there, alone, slept in a US Army base on the way. (Erlangen, I think) I used to heat tins of soup in an old mess tin on the engine and exhaust, pies and stuff wrapped in foil. Cheese or ham toasties were great! These are older photos: eventually Elfin Safety caught up and mine had a safety cage. I didn’t turn that one over, btw! Someone else got the job after my first 2 years, thanks be.

First half of Denmark-Croatia was not bad, but second was as bad as the Spain-Russia game. I have to apologise to Denmark though, for expecting them to lose in my previous post: they matched Croatia for most of it. Can’t understand why Spain and Croatia, two of the supposedly best teams left, were so poor. This was the Croatia that beat Argentina 3-0?

Steve, if you’re looking for a goalie at Anfield, why not Schmeichel? Played well, saved penalties, bosses his area. OK, so his dad was Man U, don’t hold that against him.?

On that showing today, I would give England every chance against any of those 4 teams. It’s opening up for every team left in it.

Defo not a penalty: brave referee, I thought he had a good game actually. Stood no nonsense.

Spain expected to win today and their football showed that. The Russians were perfectly aware that they could not beat them with pure football, so they chose to defend and did it very well, although they were not severely tested by a very unadventurous Spain team. What about that Russian goalkeeper, though? Saving with his foot was no fluke: look at a still of the save, his eye is firmly fixed on the ball and the way he moves his foot to boot it away. National hero now. The Russian people are beginning to believe in their team: as a Host nation, that support is an extra player. Going to watch Croatia beat Denmark now.

John, the screeching is probably from your pads: if you have new pads fitted, there should have been grease thinly applied to the back of the pads. I used to use “Copperslip” which as its name suggests, is a copper-based grease. It stops the metal backing of the pad contacting the metal of the caliper. The Copper base is to stop corrosion. It is also applied to the pins that hold the pads in the caliper, but has to be applied very thinly, so as not to get onto pad braking surfaces.

Haven’t seen the France game yet, recorded it and went to the beach, not missing a chance to get some sun and a paddle. Seen the highlights, but that’s like eating a small slice of my favourite S&K pie at our local restaurant. So I comment later.

The Uruguay game was terrific. Very impressed by the absolute determination of the Uruguayan team, which was a real team in the best sense, they all worked for each other. Cavani was unfortunate to be injured, scored two great goals and worked so well with Suarez, who worked his socks off all over the pitch, defending and attacking. His cross for Cavani’s first goal, was perfect. Every Uruguayan player knew what to do and did it magnificently. Ronaldo was played off the pitch, I have never seen him so completely played out of a game. Last WC for him and Messi?

Portugal showed no intention of really fighting for the game until the last ten minutes, they were casual and slow to build any attacks. Uruguay are lightning in their breaks, with Cavani and Suarez  running into space and almost reading each other’s minds. The defence is solid, best I have seen in this WC and the Portugal goal was the first that Uruguay have conceded in the tournament. France will be a stern test for them, but France will find them hard to break down. And who conceded 3 goals today? The France defence is fragile.

Another instance of M$ attempting catch up by buying companies and milking the best from them. This one rebounded on them in a spectacular manner, which I find myself feeling happy about, for Nokia. Know I should not feel pleased that M$ got a kicking, but I do. M$ began as a company that innovated, but massive amounts of money led IMO to a power complex and a desire to use other people’s ideas and innovation.
