Side question for all 10 users: if and when I get my laptop (maybe a year down the line) will the version of 10 Pro I want be already updated, or will I still have to struggle as most of you appear to be doing, with all those updates, some of which are actually wrecking machines?

I have a sneaking feeling that, whilst 7 is a ‘finished’ product that works fine with Updates carefully chosen by the user,* 10 is an ongoing nightmare. Probably because M$ want it like that.

*and ain’t that the person who should really matter? The user, the customer, the App Client? M$ have it Bassackwards as usual, because they want it that way.

Yes been boring with no footy, but recording 2 games today, may not see them live as looking at a flat in Louth and some shopping to do. Uruguay will go through but Brazil for me will beat Belgium  maybe 2 or 3-1. They are the WC winners, they have cured the defensive problems and are on their way. England-Brazil Final? dafter things have happened at this WC.

Knew it was just a joke, I’m not that sensitive! ? Looks like I got a half-decent Gson IL to come though. If she doesn’t put him in the loony bin first. She is high maintenance and excitable, if beautiful and super-confident. He is so laid back, he is almost horizontal. Time will tell.

Those are my ‘phones Steve! Had them about 7 years or so I think now, still work perfectly, apart from the shiny black stuff coming away from the ear muffs. (does not transfer to what is left of my hair, still silver Lol.)

Going to look at headsets, she has a pair of same Sony’s for her phone, newer than mine but exactly the same. If it works, why bring out something else? Just increase the price every year or so, her phone were about £3 dearer than mine. I have her original generic ones in a drawer, chewed cable and bare wires!

Thanks for the advice mate, I ‘ll find something in there to suit.

Cheers. Hope the car situation is OK.

My poor Roses are suffering in the heat that finally reached us last Friday and has got hotter very day. Rear arbor Yellows and Reds are just doing nothing after a fine show in Spring, now nothing, but new growth showing higher up the arbor. Front massive Peach blooms, size of dinner plates and heavily scented, are dying off in a couple of days. Whites are OK and bloom all year, often in November/December. Pics of Front roses, not doing as well as last year when they covered the wall top to bottom:

            This Year:

            Last Year:

“This Year”, was taken before today’s work: the water butt you can see, was the cause of about 4 hours of work and Bodgeification today. After much nagging reminding from SWMBO, regarding leaks and an almost-empty butt due to no rain, I set about sorting it out, as I felt great today (didn’t last: 4 hours later I collapsed into the sofa). I cannot get the parts for this old (just 7 years from B&Q) butt system now, they have stopped doing Legacy parts online. So I have had to put together bits from 3 different butt systems and the pipe is around the front now. Which is where I wanted it when I fitted it 7 years ago, butt hey ho, needs must when SWMBO drives. I cleaned out all the krap, disinfected it, hosed it out to get rid of the bleach several times, put sweet water in up to the ¼line. I could not replace the ruined top rubber seal around the join between the downpipes, didn’t have another and B&Q don’t stock it anymore. So I taped it, with layers of waterproof Duck Tape, it worked but took ages. Then it took more time to level off with the spirit level, simultaneously getting 3 mountings screwed to the wall via self tappers and rawl plugs, moving the downpipe up/down until it fitted level. Receiving much unhelpful advice from the overseeing SWMBO at the same time. Good job I had a good result from Chemo yesterday, but the butt now works and no leaks, is level. I have replaced 1.3 Kilos in weight, waist is still shrinking but muscle definition is coming back. I am exercising muscles every day. Put on the shorts that still fitted before the op, today. They fell down straightaway, fortunately I was in the bedroom and subjected to only SWMBO’s amusement. Some women would have just admired my new slimmer physique…? ? ? ?  lolz.

Steve your former post about your 16 yo, resonates exactly with my 19 yo gson, just about to take final exams in Electrical Installations at Grimsby College Institute, part of the Hull Uni Group. He is confident of passing all but English, but has a tutor who understands that and has given up a week of college holidays to take him through English and get him past it. Gson is great with numbers, always bad at writing things until I built him a PC at about 12, now uses a keyboard and Google Docs, Word, OOffice, light CAD. He flies over a KB, fingers a blur on the keys, remembers all his passwords. Ask him to write them down, or anything else, he can’t “It all goes blurred in my head, granddad!” At school (an Academy) he was always in lower percentile, except for Maths, Engineering and IT, His Engineering tutor saw and recognised that he was a “hands-on” lad and encouraged him. His English teacher was also his Form tutor and once told me she saw him as a Motor Mechanic, in a really sneering way. I told her she was a krap Educator and wouldn’t know a capable pupil, with a different intelligence, if one appeared before her. In Maths, he worked out answers in his head and they were always right. Maths teacher: “Where is your working out?”   -Gson: “Why, is it incorrect?”     “No.”    “Then it’s right and you should tick it!”   (An attitude that got him noted at school)    Maths muppet: “You must put down the working”    Gson, now frustrated: “But I can’t, it all goes blurry in my head!” Absolutely no attempt to understand, by the people who should be trying to understand their pupils. Like I say, krap educators.

Sound familiar? Put that together with a lad who started out small until becoming big at around 14 and picked on, but fought back with moves I taught him, which twice got him suspended until the school realised his tormentors were bullying others. The moves I taught him are made once and cause pain, as you might recognise. Knees, elbows, nose are painful when struck properly, but it usually only needs one.

Grimsby College Institute was an eye opener for him. He has better mates now, works in an adult environment with actual practical Work Experience at actual companies and has worked on College Systems. Looking for a College-sponsored job at Ørsten, a Danish company  building wind farm components and bringing the power ashore to the National Grid, at a big complex along the A16 between Louth and Grimsby. And he is the family Gentle Giant now, a massive lad with absolutely no temper at all. Grimsby was the life-changer for him. I think your lad will be the same: treat them like potential failures at school, that is what you get. Treat them like adults, give them real responsibilities and 9/10 times it works.

Love the lad, he thinks he has already convinced dad he can look after his dd when he takes her down to Peterborough to live together. Has realised how much she loves granddad and knows he has to impress him. I was being a bit ‘economical with the truth’ : his family live in Grantham and they are all Forest supporters: nearest club down the A52, from the East, straight into the City Ground over the Lady Bay Bridge*. I gave them some good (free) side street parking, all Forest houses who watch out for cars with Forest stickers.

He’s a nice lad actually and totally devoted to our gd. FB lovey-dovey photos all the time. Sickening, really.? ? ?

You will see from the map that there is another Footy place over the Trent, on the Mucky Bank Black & White side. We get their balls this side of the Trent due to their “up and under” way of playing, then we get them by the balls when we play them. They once had Tommy Lawton, old England player, in the days when smashing the goalie into the net with the ball in his hands, was a recognised goal. They still play like that, football from the Thirties.

Thanks Steve, great advice to check out. Had not thought of Bluetooth or headset: she is a cable chewer and I had to put spiral wrap around her last headphones. I like the Bluetooth headset you write about, that will solve her cable chewing and will help keep online with mates. Maybe that low voltage she got chewing through last tear’s headphone has electrified her brain, she has come on so much since starting Grammar school at 11! ?

Thanks Tadka, that puts me off Gaming ‘phones, good advice. I have an old set of Sony ‘phones and the ear muff material is beginning to flake away, but they still work perfectly even after being dropped to the floor so many times. I eventually hooked then onto my desk with a 2-elastic band and tie wrap arrangement, to a Command Strip hook. “Bodgified”* solution, keeps them off the floor.

*Old engineer’s term, I last used in my old workshop – example: “Bob, this xxxxx does not fit the XXXXXX.”

Me, taking a look: “Bodgify it, not difficult. Take the xxxxx and measure it carefully, see if a yyyyy screwed/bolted/welded/brazed/glued to a ZZZZZZ will work, get on with it lad.”

Well, I am an old engineer. We don’t die, we just fade away to be Bodgified in another body. That one is usually Pre-Bodged.

You had a wetter Spring in 2015 Les:    http://tinyurl.com/y8d75dv6     (scroll to map)

The IoM suffered with the West of UK from a wetter, colder summer, from a cold wet Atlantic airstream:

                        http://tinyurl.com/yb7bcf2p

Winter 2014 had some humungous storms across the UK, especially the West and wasps, among other predatory insects, would have lost a lot of food for producing young. Under those conditions, they hunker down in the hives and keep warm. Many more adults try to stay alive over winter, but they are weak and unable to breed and feed in any large usual numbers. This has a knock on effect for a couple of years, but then they react by breeding in larger numbers.

I will never forget the massive wasp swarm I saw from the hill at my old garage, which lay at a 3-road crossroads. Fortunately, it went from the roof space of the old pub across the road, up the main road and into a huge old oak tree. Lots of panicking villagers running in every direction! The pub landlord (happened to be my nephew) had no idea they were there, got Pest Control in and found a huge nest, empty of all except hundreds of safely dead wasps. The Pest guy cleaned it out, put in repellent and nephew had it put up over the main bar. Last I heard of it, his stepson had it.

RIP Alan, nephew, brother, best mate. Cancer is a bitch.

My senior Gdaughter had the effrontery to ask that I take her and BF to Mablethorpe at 2:30 on Saturday, from her home about 6 miles from us and another 8 miles from there. Gave me 30 minutes to get there and back. Sorry sweetheart, granddad is watching England-Sweden at 3pm and you will need an earlier pickup, 1:30. ‘Yes GD, we are going to watch the match on a big screen in Maybo (local slang for “Mablethorpe”) ‘

I explained that (a) due to chemo/immune system issues, I cannot be among large crowds – (b) leaving home at 2:30 will not get you very near the screen, there will be huge numbers, from all over East Lindsey – (c) It’s still a 1:30 pickup: take it or leave it. Stern, strict granddad, am I cruel?

She took the 1:30 deal. Expecting to see her on Look North BBC News later that day. And hear her: she is a large, beautiful, loud blonde without any tact whatsoever. I have never known her to be interested in football before, but I have converted BF into a Forest fan. Bonus. ???

                              Come on, England!

Today I went out to dead head and prune my Front garden roses: absolutely covered in bees and hoverflies. Then the wasps turned up, but only to eat the hoverflies. Saw some wasps taking hoverflies away, having paralysed them.

At the end of summer, about September/October, wasps are looking for sweet food. I have a game with them: lay some old, decaying fruit on my back garden slabs, in the direct sun, and wait. The fruit ferments, the wasps eat it and get drunk! Absolutely legless, weaving about all over the place. I have picked them up and let them crawl on my hands, they are harmless, usually fall off and lay on their backs for a bit, turn over and stagger into flight, weaving about. There must be some mighty hangovers in the nest next morning!

John, the seagulls are probably looking for the local Landfill site, there are always masses of them at inland landfill sites, feeding off all kinds of krap. when I lived  Living close to the east coast, we get thousands of the buggas and they are better fed, but they krap on my car, so you can have them! No charge…

You are in an impossible situation Steve, I feel for both you and daughter. Living in Sheltered Accommodation, I see Carers come and go to different friends and neighbours and I know how valuable their work is, to the people they care for. Three of my five nieces were in the same line of work, most are retired now, but the one who was left had enough of the poor wages, went on IT courses and is now a lecturer at Nottingham Uni on big bucks. I know the high opinion my neighbours have of Carers and one of them is a close friend of my daughter, a lovely lass.

In your position, I cannot see how I would act differently: you always have to look after your own kids the best way you can. The people who run these low paid jobs know that they have dedicated workers and others who will take their place, they don’t give a damn as long as the profit comes in. At this moment, life has given you no choice, IMO. I hope you get through it all OK.

It’s the system that is at fault.

Well that was an incredible game. The Columbians might have won if they had concentrated on playing football and actually kicked the ball, instead of everyone in a red strip. I thought the Panamanians were bad, but this lot were more argumentative, more cheating and twice as dirty. I lost count of the number of yellow cards the absolutely useless referee dished out to them, but several Columbuggas already on yellows just continued serious fouling after being given a yellow. If the ref had taken control and sent just one off before half time, that would have stopped it. Maybe the Columbuggas had been watching Neymar perform his cheating tricks, they fell over in “pain” whenever an England player looked at them sideways. Why the player who nutted Jordan Henderson in the head and jaw was not sent down the tunnel, I will never know. The daft thing is, when they played serious football, they were better than England. Most of the time, what they played was not football.

I cannot give a Best England Player award, because every one was a hero. JH was a rock, so was Kyle Walker. Trippier never stopped running, making great crosses and passes. Harry Kane stood more unfair, illegal, unseen punishment than any player should have to put up with, and just got up again. Ashley Young was just about crippled when he came off, gave everything, but the only reason I could see for picking him, was for his free kicks and slowing down the game. And his free kicks were not good enough. Sterling is just not doing it like he does for Man City, I don’t know why. Lingard was good, came close. Stones just gets better, but needs to take the hassle like his captain does. Maguire was solid with the others in the back 3. Pickford was a hero saving the penalty, almost got to another. Dier was cool when he stepped up to the spot.

All in all, they may not win the WC, but they are a band of brothers and they fight for each other, it shows on the pitch.

We still need a goalscorer, somebody who can do the business in open play. But I think we can beat Sweden, get behind their back line which is a bit ponderous. Maybe bring back Trent Alexander-Arnold, for his pace and his passing.

After Sweden, who knows what could happen? We actually won a penalty shoot out!

The next game will be tougher than we think. If we get through against Columbia, I believe we can beat Sweden.

The only part I don’t like is that miserable dirge of an Anthem. Why can’t we have a proper ENGLISH anthem?

                                      Come on, England!

Lots of bees are in my neighbour’s house across the Close, she has the Pest people in. Also in our Close is a huge wasp nest in a big old Sycamore tree, which has been there since at least 2003 when we moved here. I asked everyone to leave it alone when I found out that wasps in the UK kill millions of tons of other insect pests every year: they eat them before the Queen starts laying, then they paralyse them and put them in the cells with the wasp grubs, to feed on over winter. Most of the adults then die off and a new batch are hatched out in late Spring, after feeding and developing well from the paralysed insects. Wasps are fascinating, without them we would have a serious insect problem, but I still stay clear of them and don’t annoy them, have been stung before. Their sting can be reused up to 20 times, it’s just a hollow tube with a sharpened end. Bees have a barb and die after each sting, so it’s a last resort. Both stings leave pheromones in the stung area, which attracts others from the hive to attack as well.

Ants and wasps share a common ancestor from hundreds of millions of years ago: look at their body shapes. We get flying ants every year, a bonanza for the hundreds of sparrows and starlings around here.

Sorry to be late back Steve, not been well today and been food shopping. JayCeeDee is correct about the relay as far as I recall, but remember I have not swung a spanner in anger since about 2000. As for the water pump, this video might help:

                                          This too:    http://tinyurl.com/yd5bce2q

                                          – which has the PDF that JayCeeDee mentions, you can download. Replacing that pump is a heck of a job Steve, access is difficult and best price I can find locally is £300 from an independent garage I trust. 2 Ford dealers want £450+. TBH, was I in your position, I would look around local independents. If there is one you can trust, ask them for a price. In my working days (with working hands and eyes) I would have done this in my old workshop, with all the tools and parts on hand, but I would not expect someone without experience to do it successfully. It could take a couple of days or more.

Well if we don’t get a promised lift from an EU contribution to our Rural broadband around here before we leave, it will certainly have affected my speeds!

Richard congratulations on that huge weight loss, I can’t match that.
