I have pleaded on FB for people to not come to our Lincolnshire coast. Or any coast, for that matter. Our infection rate is 1/3rd of the England average and we would like to keep it that way. Deaths are even lower and would be more so if not for Care Home figures. Considering that our population has (I believe) the highest average age in the country, that is surprising, until you take account of the preponderance of rural areas and villages scattered apart. Most people in Louth are wearing face masks, including myself and my Gert, when we are out. Nothing at our resorts, is open: no cafes, rides, attractions. If you don’t bring your own food, you will go hungry. Just don’t die of hunger on our beaches, it leaves another mess for our Council workers to pick up.

I liked this Ed: ” At least this makes it politically impossible to lock up ‘people at risk’ as it would decimate the NHS and Care Sectors as well as antagonise a bunch of belligerent male gang-members.

Three of my consultants are of Asian extraction, including my oncology surgeon and the doctor who phones me on his behalf. My prostate consultant is Spanish. One GP is African, another Afghani, possibly Uzbek. The practice Leader is Malaysian and is a Malay. I have known him for almost 20 years and he is a fine but overworked doctor. When I see the racist ignoramuses (ignorami?) on FB splashing ‘Deport them!’ across the page, I think, have you or your family never been treated by our multicultural NHS? I tell all of those medical people when I see or speak to them, as a last word, “Please stay safe and well, we need you and I personally respect you.” In normal times I always shake their hands.

Good points Ed, I had not thought this through. Filling a higher demand for smaller bottles requires more workforce and they will have to be observing social distancing. makes sense.

We are fairly good financially, I will keep the payments going Lee. You can’t run the website and forum on fresh air. To me it’s always been a good resource, where we can have a natter, receive or give help. You worked on this to carry us through after MM folded and you have continued to improve the forum. You should be rewarded for that and I would like to keep my payments going, in order to do that.

I hope your personal situation improves soon and that your plans provide you with a good living. Best of luck!

Speaking of deliveries, (hijacking this thread) I have had very few problems, most of mine lately have been UPS or DPD. However, I have been waiting since May 5th for a bottle of Isopropyl alcohol from Amazon, supplier being MG Chemicals, which is a UK company and states that they do not deal with China. Every time I check Amazon Tracking, the message is ‘not yet despatched’ and ‘an email will be sent to you when this item is despatched’. I have found MGC customer services email and asked that they give me more info, before I am forced to cancel with Amazon and look elsewhere.

Amazon Prime deliveries: some are delayed, but not by much IME. Hermes I have had (bad) experience with in the past, or rather my SWMBO has. The local courier, who lived around the corner from us at the time, was a good bloke. He worked for another company eventually because every time he made a delivery there was at least one other customer asking where his order was. But Yodel is the one company that I do not like to see on my screen, saying they are delivering one of my orders. They are crap.

Oh yes Ed I knew two like that in the previous Close, male and a female. My usually reticent wife told the female to change her false teeth! (End of acquaintance, end of problem :yahoo: ) I would walk away from the male, even before the corona virus situation began. Of course now I don’t see either of them after the home move. Bonus!

Very pleased you made contact Richard and I have a lot of sympathy for the troubles with your daughter. Having one severely dyslexic grandson, and another who is a MENSA genius but has Aspergers, I know from past history with the boys, the pressures you may be experiencing. Dyslexic gson only causes a problem for his single parent dad when he stays in his room on the PC and TV, due to being out of work from Fantasy Island, the entertainment complex near Butlins Skegness. Aspergers gson was a big problem when younger, his dad being long gone and myself having to fill that gap. It took time, lots of tough love and repetitive life lessons, but he has held down a great IT job since he was 18, is now 26 and has his own apartment. Which is in fact the one above ours, as we have left the village which was our home for 17 years and moved into a secure, gated apartment block in Louth, near the River Lud. Senior gson is now working from home and has made himself available for any help. We feel blessed that we have a good family: yesterday our son came and secured the new tumble dryer onto the washer.

I wish I could offer you a way forward with your daughter: is there no online learning/activity that she could use?

We all hope that you manage your troubles, you and your family stay safe and well. Many of us are obviously concerned about you and I think a PM to one of us now and again, with a short message, would allay some of that concern. Take care, stay safe.

That cable does HDMI to VGA (so it claims) but my Mum’s PC really only has VGA out (not even DVI) so I would need a cable to convert VGA to digital and I don’t know of a passive cable that can do that 😁. I don’t think that that is the real problem though.

It’s male at both ends Graham, so should work either way. But as you say, and after reading more replies, maybe not the real problem.

Born in 81 would make you 15 in ’96 Lee. Nearest World Cup would be USA ’94, if you were 13.

First World Cup I watched on TV was ’58, in Sweden. I would have been 13 then, watched the games on a 19″ (I think) TV at the Scarborough B&B where we always went on holiday. Near Peasholme Park, in the shadow of a cliff. The picture looked as if it was snowing all the time, but I thought it was magic: we didn’t have a TV at home until the year I left school in ’61. My dad hated the telly, wouldn’t have a colour set for years until I told him he could tell snooker ball and football shirt colours.

But double-check that day and channel. I can remember how it ended but the rest I can not. I remember at the time I was doing an essay on Alexander Bell for school halfway through. Anyhow, I am not going to look at the results of every game even though I know how it ends. Anyhow, ITV are playing the full competition from start to finish. P.S Yes, I need to cut down on my “ANYHOWS”.

Just re read that first post Lee: You were 16 in 1980? I was 35 then and had been made workshop foreman at the garage.

If you knew then what you know now, what would you change, if anything?

For myself, I would ask for a fixed salary, to increase with the RPI or cost of living Index every year. My problem was that I changed from a job and a boss I hated, to one who was married to the lass I grew up across the road from. We were also bikers together (the boss, not the lass lol) until I joined the Army. I took his word, he was a good boss who let me run the place, but the pay had to be fought for every year.

Anyhow ( ) I will be watching tonight, thanks for that. :good:

After watching the England – Cameroon game, I was reminded of just how poor England were and how much they underestimated the African team, who were the better team on the day. But also how good then was Gazza as a very young player. Mark Wright, even when reduced to one good eye. Lineker, whose presence on MoTD has become anything from overbearing to laughable at times, was non-stop, covered every blade of grass. Shilton, in the autumn of his England career, so composed and making saves that saved England. And what a bad decision to substitute John Barnes, who was ripping the left side of Cameroon’s defence to shreds.

As my lad once said at a job interview many years ago, well after he had been given the job:

                                    “I’m ducksleasic you know.”

“WTF is that, do you mean dyslexic?”

“Yes but I can’t spell it!”

The job, assembling and testing radio and stereo equipment, was one that he really, really wanted and he lasted until the company folded as a result of cheap Asian outsourcing. He always got on well there because of that SOH.

Everyone in our family has to have a daft SOH and be able to laugh at themselves. I insist upon it.

The only apps I removed on my Sony Xperia L3, was Sony’s own “News Suite” and Google News. Both are always way behind other sources such as Reuters and even the BBC. I see no point in getting notifications for news reports I read a day or two before from a faster, up to date source.

Dave, I had retired the Hudl I got from Nolan after making sure it was reset. I had bought a Lenovo Tab 3-8″ 3 years ago and wanted the Hudl2 for ‘insurance’. Now the Lenovo is quite frankly a complete pita, slow and sluggish even after I applied all the fixes and reduced  internal and SD storage. Battery is dying: replacements vary from £14.49 (cheapest) to almost £40. Hudl has an almost new battery and I have in the past repaired my granddaughter’s Hudl by using two “sold as seen” from ebay and her own, cannibalising all 3 to make one, which is still working. I also put a new charger and charging port in that one, they are cheap enough from ebay. Gdaughter calls it “Frankenhudl”!

So I know the Hudl quite well, not afraid to delve into its innards, in fact I enjoy that. I also think that the Hudl camera is better than the Lenovo and the screen res seems better, although the spec’s don’t bear that out. It’s certainly quicker, so I will be setting it back up soon as. If you have no intention of using your Hudl and it still has usable parts, I would be happy to take it off your hands. Let me know what you want for it and we can work something out with P&P. I am interested in seeing how far into the future I can take my Hudl.

Dave I don’t use speedtest.net much now, I mostly use think broadband:    https://tinyurl.com/ybggxwc9

I had problems with speedtest after the lockdown and everyone was on t’internet. It kept directing me to the Hull servers of Kcom, which is garbage. Think broadband’s servers are not known to me, but I get the same averages every time, with less lag.

France apparently had severe Covid-19 cases back in December 2019. Maybe the Chinese have been given a bum-rap! link

Still a possible Chinese source Ed: this morning I read a Google news report on my phone that it was an airport worker at Charles de Gaulle airport who was the asymptomatic carrier. She gave it to her husband, he contracted pneumonia but recovered. The French health authorities are now looking into her contacts with Chinese travellers/airline staff.

The same report states that the USA may have had cases back in December. The WHO is advising all national health authorities, to check historic samples of “influenza-like” material, for a Covid connection. It also states that there was a cave full of bats in China, all of which were infected. This disease may have a longer history than first thought. 😥

from the BBC Coronavirus Update, not as informative as the Google News I read:

WHO warns more ‘early cases’ could emerge

                                            AFPCopyright: AFP
The World Health Organization has warned that more early cases of coronavirus are likely to be uncovered in countries around the globe.

It comes after a French doctor said he had tested a sample from a patient diagnosed with pneumonia on 27 December last year, and found it was positive for coronavirus.

The development means Covid-19 may have arrived in Europe almost a month earlier than previously thought.

Speaking in Geneva, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said he was “not surprised” by the news.

He called on other countries to reassess their medical records from late 2019 to help to build a “newer and clearer picture” of the pandemic. “
