S**t happens when you least expect it, when it will cause the greatest hassle, when you are no longer able to defeat s**t as easily as you once could, Nolan.

Similar happened to me, trying to remove an incorrectly-installed CD from a neighbour’s desktop, with my dysfunctional hands. It shattered and I wound up stripping the tower to remove the bits. Thus relearning the fact that broken CD’s have sharp edges. A-Rhesus Negative all over the PC.

Not doing that again, thank you!

Steve the Manhattan SX has only one Dish input, don’t know how that would work with the LNB, usually needs at least 2x LNB output sockets from the dish. Check this out, scroll down to the grey and white pic at the bottom, see “Dish In“:

          http://tinyurl.com/ybbapm8k

Full kit, includes dish and LNB, but still only one dish output:

          http://tinyurl.com/ya32obg9

          Dish Kit
          43cm Minidish inc wall mount
          Single Output LNB
          Cable
2xF Connectors – One input connects to the 2x LNB outputs. Unsure about that.
          4xWall Bolts

It will probably work fine, but no chance of feeding more than one TV (needs a Quad LNB) and 2x LNB outlets are needed to record and watch at same time: my Humax HDR-1100S can record 2 prog’s while watching another. The EPG looks better though.

Good luck, I know what it means when “My mate has one of these and I want one,” is said in your ear! With me, it’s usually my daughter has something and SWMBO wants one. Hard to win against such arguments.??

That is very interesting information regarding Tesco management VFM. Although the business obviously had its problems, it may explain how Tesco came to overcome that, moving onward and upward. A lesson for other UK organisations.

Being promoted beyond the subject’s level of competence happened a lot during my Army service, installing certain people who had been in admin capacities for years, into posts which required tactical knowledge of which they had no experience. A very few compensated for this lack, by deciding upon an experienced subordinate and relying upon that soldier’s advice. The rest “winged it” and either limped on, usually blaming subordinates, or crashed and burned.

              Thanks guys.

JayCeeDee, no apology necessary, found that funny. ?Spleen went when the Pancreas tail* was removed, they found that the spleen was full of nasty cells, far more than the P-tail.

Steve, I don’t need any more work atm thanks. Currently removing all items and racking from my shed, found a leak on the rear wall. Need to repaint and re-felt the back, where the water gets in. Happened since my lovely neighbour got a cowboy in to put up a fence.

Good spot Nolan. Johnny Cash became more creative as he got older, I think, a far more intelligent writer and performer than most people realised, not just a Country singer in the end.

JayCeeDee, thank you! only just checked this Thread, going to read that PDF.

The Marsden issued a booklet to me called “Eating well when you have cancer”. There’s a PDF on the Marsden website. LINK.

I found it a really useful reference. Plain advice, no preaching. Hope you find it useful.

PS – as you’ll read in the book, you’re not drinking enough water. One consultant told me that more water will help dilute the toxins in the body – I asked him wouldn’t it dilute the treatment also – he didn’t have an answer for me!! However, I’ve been told on several occasions, by several health professionals,  that I should drink more water – I still find it a struggle.

Me too! My enlarged prostate only gets me up twice a night now, things have improved from 4-5 times. However, it seems like 10 or 15 minutes before the stream actually stops. Reminds me of my last week at Castle Hill after the Op: I had to keep asking for at least 2 bottles until I could get up and go on my own, praying for the Dreaded Dribbles to wait until I got to the Loo!

But I do drink a lot of water and I am finding that using Spring water is helping me. Just been food shopping this am and bought 4x 1.5L bottles, probably need more in a couple of days. I have a glass in front of me here as I type, keep drinking a drop and filling it up. My liquid waste is now a much better colour, meaning almost transparent, which must mean something.

My No.2 gson listened to my Stones, Creedence and other stuff first about 3 years ago in my car, now searches my USB media for them. He is a big but very quiet lad and it just seems a bit strange that he loves really hard Rock and Blues, but his head is banging and eyes closed in the car when I am taking him home from work. Copied a lot of stuff for him and he plays it at home. His dad is an ’80’s man and hates all the tracks he hears from downstairs. That’s revenge, IMO!

13 yo gdaughter also likes Queen, her mum loves Motown and she shares that taste with mum. Kids are exposed to all kinds of music now, from grandparents and parents to their mates.

T’other way round for me, Nolan. Right eye weak, left eye perfect. (when younger) When I joined the AAC, I went for Airframes & Engines Tech, plus Air Gunner and/or Observer. The AAC had smaller numbers of personnel and aircraft then: we had to duplicate trades and fields. There is an art to Air Gunnery, called Deflection Fire: basically the weapon has to be aimed at where the target will arrive, allowing for different velocities and direction of flights. The Gunner has to track that perceived flight and open fire at the right moment, ‘walking’ the target into the stream of fire*. This calls for absolute balance of both eyes: not necessarily 20/20 vision in each eye, but equal balance in both eyes, providing that there is no short- or long-sight. Mine were tested by an RAMC Ophthalmologist and he found that one of the tiny focussing muscles was paralysed, probably from birth, and gave poor focus, unbalancing my vision and losing me 2 further trades. (And more money!) I had already discovered there was a problem in basic training on the Ranges, when I could not hit a target accurately firing right handed, so switched to left and found that I was eventually a 1,000 yard shot. I became good at this and went to Bisley 3 times, with some success.

In the last 3 years, successive eye tests have reported that my cataracts are growing only very slowly. I stopped going to Specsavers 4 years ago when they decided to extend all kinds of expensive “offers”. I went to a local independent Optician and Ophthalmologist, who told me that I have no serious problem and should wait until it gets bad enough to A-restrict vision and B- the NHS can do what is needed.

*Stream of fire never better demonstrated than by NAAFI manager John Leake, who shot down an Argie Skyhawk from the deck of HMS Ardent. His story is almost unbelievable:

                            http://tinyurl.com/yb72pdmr

Ardent was attacked by the Argies so seriously that it had to be abandoned, but John left the ship with the rest of the ship’s company who survived. Unfortunately, his story ended sadly.

Steve, there is some dross on Freesat, but the Humax setup lets you delete any channels you don’t want. Example: it gives you as many local TV and radio stations near you that your signal can take, which leads to a lot of duplicated information. I just kept East Yorks & Lincs, with radio Nottingham (following footy news) and BBC East Midlands News, which serves my old home area. You might need to fit another LNB to your dish: I had to do that, wish now I had fitted a Quad connection, to get another outlet in this desktop room. Could then have, say, a 24″ Freesat TV as well as Freeview on the PC. Quad LNB:

Hope your Antenna Man is OK with that!

BL & Steve: here is the latest Freesat channel list:

                              http://tinyurl.com/y856z2p3

Click the blue “Show more channels” box and scroll down for all the OD services. There are also 2x PDF’s lower down, one for a channel list and one for regional channels.

I was chuffed when Quest went HD, watch that a lot. Quest is also putting on a sort of League football “MoTD” and showing highlights of Championship, Leagues 1 and 2, at 9. HD channels will grow on Freesat, I believe. If your TV upscales to HD, as mine does, the problem goes away. Different for higher res like 4K I suppose, but my old peepers are happy with HD.

On another thread I will start soon, I will lay out what I will do with my TV/audio setup.

BL, Ch4 taking HD out of Freesat was Ch4 asking for a higher price and Freesat would not play tha game. The sale of boxes and ads is what pays for some or all of Freesat, which was originally set up by BBC and ITV, but has many more channels supporting it now. Ch4 services are funded by the taxpayer, with ads of course thrown into the mix. TBH, I dislike Ch4 and ITV, for the amount of spin off channels, most of which are utter doss, and dross repeated on each successive channel on the same day, sometimes at the same time. There are channels emerging which will blow Ch4 away IMO.

                                Evolution?

Something equally weird: I have 2 hearing aids, fitted over 12 months ago. I used to have to keep them turned up, but over the last few months I have found the volume going up. I put them in and turn both down two steps, discovering that I can hear perfectly well. The only problem, is that they are set up with a high treble bias, which has completely ruined music for me, unless I take them out and increase the volume, which is not appreciated by passengers. The other day I stepped out of the car and left the music playing. Loud. Stones early blues. A neighbour eventually made me understand what he was saying: “Are you fekin deaf?” To which I replied, “Actually, yes.”

Some of my neighbours do not appreciate good music. Or me.

After my pancreatic cancer op in April this year, and during the first stages of the ensuing chemotherapy, drugs, etc, I was informed that I would need to see an NHS Dietitian. I was told at Castle Hill Cancer ward that this was a must, because there are certain things I cannot eat or drink, certain periods between meals and sizes of meals that I must stick to. Here we are in August and I am no wiser: there are apparently so few NHS dietitians that none is available for me until November. Maybe…

I carried out my own research of course, which led to several conflicting sources of information. Therefore I decided to use my own commonsense. I drink alcohol very rarely, usually a white wine Spritzer. I eat in moderation and try to avoid processed foods, red meat and other foods that may be harmful. I drink no tap water here, ours is very hard water, so I drink several liters of “Highland spring” water a week. I eat chicken, fish and the (very) occasional Steak and kidney pie, with few potatoes and lots of veg, which I love. I take a little sugar on my cereal, nothing else.

By the time this dietitian has got around to telling me what I should or should not eat and drink, I will have fixed my own diet. If his/her instructions conflict with my own choices, I will probably say yes/no and go my own way. Not the Fault of the NHS, simply the fact that what was supposed to support my recovery, is one more Lost Factor.

Specialise! There will always be a place for those who spot a gap and go for it, create and supply goods and services, and build a business which requires human labour of one sort or another. Probably not as much as previous decades and there will be many falling by the wayside, but it will happen. The world is about to get even more competitive and competition is what has always driven the human race.

I see a future whereby some sections of the population will become second or even third class citizens, being paid by the taxpayer to live. A significant proportion are already engaged in that process, I fear. The big problem is the number of people on the planet and the inability of perhaps >50% to feed their families.

Steve all Forest fans who were at Hillsborough remember what the Sun did and hate the rag just as much as Liverpool supporters. I was not there myself, but lots of mates and family were. It is sometimes forgotten that there was another team and another set of supporters at that match. I was told that the Forest fans towards the front of their stand, could see what was happening. Some wanted to get across and help, but the Police stopped them. It is also not recorded that one group of Forest lads ripped up an advert hoarding and tried to use it as a stretcher. They were arrested, but never charged.

Football rivalry is one thing, but that was just sheer, dangerous incompetence by the police, followed by filthy, lying reporting.

The changes brought about in this country after the smoke clears from whatever form our future will take, will become more and more inescapable.

Political parties will never be the same: how the electorate votes will change, existing Polls and voting “expert” opinion will be proved incorrect. I fully expect a period of extreme uncertainty amongst the British people. That could bring about Civil Unrest. We have been lied to and treated with condescension by both sides and by the political parties. MP’s on the whole, are interested in maintaining their seats in the House and pay only lip service to the wishes of their constituents.

I heard this morning that the finest of all Conservative MP’s, Sir Peter Tapsell, died at 88. This man was my MP here in Louth & Horncastle and he was a real independent voice, never afraid to speak against his own Party, in or out of government, always available and approachable at Constituency Offices in both towns, even in his 80’s. He spoke against the 2 Gulf Wars, the Afghan adventures and the Maastricht Treaty, amongst many other issues. There is not another UK politician today, from any party, with half his integrity, honour and real constituency service.

Thanks StevieP, been looking for something like that myself, for the 1,000’s of tracks on my NAS and in the USB stick in the car.

                                            Cheers, Bob.
