My post completely disappeared – the original post said I was about to go full fibre and wanted an alternate to BTs crappy kit. I found to my surprise that I had to have an approved VDSL modem/router. link My big surprise was that TPLink is not approved! Approval is also required if you are using (say) Sky on a BT backbone. Sorry my posts have got out of order, I have no idea what happened!

Strange Ed: the TP-Link Archer V400 I just bought is advertised as ” for Phone Line Connections (BT Infinity, TalkTalk, EE and PlusNet Fibre)  ”

          And it works a treat!

Open the filler cap for about 10 minutes Boris. I know all tanks have breather pipes to atmosphere, but that helps vent fumes.

I thought so too Dave, but at least I can use the more expensive, replacement pass – through Netgear ones now. And they are more capable than the TP Link jobs. If they don’t overheat again. Maybe I had one faulty Netgear item in the first instance until I returned and replaced, I hope so anyway.

You are having a rough time with EDF Graham, but I believe that might be because you aren’t on a DD of some nature. That’s what the suppliers all like, they want to know there is a regular payment plan in operation: causes them less work. Fortunately I was able to set it all up, choose the best Paperless option and carry on with a monthly DD at a set fixed amount. Then keep checking the website and my payments, to make sure they don’t try to increase it. EDF were always doing that, but I got to the point of using their Chatline to say NO I will not pay that, but I might pay this. If you don’t like it, I will switch to another supplier. They don’t like losing Regulars. I will do that with Shell when and if they use the same tactics.

Just one thing about Shell: if anyone does use them, do not use their Broadband. I have a mate who does and he is stuck with a contract he hates, with crap customer service. Which is a bit surprising, as I have found the Energy CS to be very good. As ever, we can vote with our feet, if the contract penalties allow it!

Was it a Smets1 or Smets2 meter Graham? The early ones were notorious for going TU, especially after switching, when the new supplier’s tech does not work with the last supplier’s meter. In fact, I know one friend  whose Smets2 does not work after he switched.

I was with EDF for over 8 years at the former home and happy with them until we gave notice to move and gave a Final Reading on the day we left. First they said, you cannot give notice until 3 weeks (21 working days, stupid, arbitrary period) until we gave 21 wkg days, when they said, should have been 28 days. They took until after we had been in the new place for 3 weeks, before they contacted me and asked for another reading. No chance, I said, we gave it, the house is empty, all switched off and it’s a Housing Association bungalow, which the HA cannot rent out until Lockdown is over.

I was going to take up EDF at the new place, but I inherited a Shell Energy tariff from the last resident, changed it for a cheaper one and dropped £35 a month from the tariff EDF wanted me to have. Goodbye EDF! Shell will give me a SM2 when the current situation allows.

Dare not tell my No.2 gson about that Steve: his dad would hate me for it! Gson would look at it as endless game storage.

I could certainly never use that much storage, but on a GB per £ basis, it is definitely cheap.

                      @wasbit:

had a problem setting up everything, mostly Plusnet’s fault, suspect they don’t like me using a new router. However, am impressed immediately: much faster, Wifi reaches much further and I have setup 2x paired Ethernet-connected powerline adapters. And thereby hangs a tale.

Previously, in an attempt to get more juice from the horrible Plusnet ‘Hub One’ router, I fitted 2x Netgear Powerline PL-1000 adapters. All good until one blew its cookies, overheated. Found 2x Tp-Link 3yo adapters, AV 500, fitted, they worked. BUT would not work with my new TP-Link Archer VR 400 router, go figure! I had actually ordered 2x new Netgear’s when the other blew, as a return/replacement. Fitted them, all working.

So the TP-L router will not work with the TP-L adapters, nor will my onboard TP-L network card. Although they both work with the Netgear adapters.  But I am quite impressed at initial usage, the webpage is good and there are lots of great features. Missus is happy because I have stopped swearing now me internet is working. :yahoo:

Keeping an eye (and a hand) on the adapter temp’s though…

As a champion of independent local garage businesses, and recalling how daily working life used to be, I hope that the good ones survive and the ones riding to work wearing a Stetson hat, mounted on a pony, go to the wall. All local small business need to survive this catastrophe, of course, but I remember some tough times. During the 84 Miners’ strike in a pit village garage, work was hand to mouth at times. Considering the times then, when I say we lost £24,000 by having to auction unsold sales vehicles, you may understand why all of us took a pay cut and the owner remortgaged. Meanwhile one striking NCB ‘fitter’ was carrying out repairs in his backyard.

We never again sold vehicles, but used the space for extra MOT and repairs accommodation, and we had to sell of our burgeoning Hire business. It was tough: this will be tougher I believe. Best of luck to everyone here with a small business.

Should have it Monday, but appointments may mean I won’t have it working until Tues or Weds. I will let you know the verdict,  @wasbit.

I used a similar model a few years ago and had good service with it. Should have kept it, but gave it to a friend in need. Soft, me.

Interesting article about this that I found earlier tonight :- https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/still-no-news-cancellation-6-month-mot-extension-research-reveals-drivers-will-mot-anyway/195246

No surprise to me is the warning from the IGA that”…drivers don’t care for their cars.” Even back in my time as a workshop foreman and MOT tester, I lost count of the number of late MOT tests I or one of the lads carried out, only to find the vehicle unsafe. Telling drivers that they could not take their wheels away without signing a disclaimer resulted in some memorable scenes! Bad fuel and oil leaks, exhausts hanging off, brakes obviously inoperative, the list was endless. The one I really remember is a local with a Mk. III Cortina that had so many faults making it unfit for the road and was obviously rebuilt from at least two cars: different colour trim and interior gave it away, but when I first tested the seat belts, 2 inertia reels would not work, 3 belts were of different colours.

The one that really annoyed me was my eldest nephew, just 5 years my junior, married and living in Scotland since he was 18. Bought a MGB GT up there, drove down and had it MOT’d at Uncle Bob’s place. I had asked him to do that because I wanted to see it on a ramp (and it was two months out of date!) because I had driven behind it and was convinced it was driving out of alignment. Big line of welds in several places across the floor and chassis, brakes leaking fluid, exhaust had parts of what appeared to be drainpipe welded in. Checking chassis and engine numbers, VIN numbers in 2 places were different. Phoned a mate at Leyland and the engine number was wrong too. Nephew received a severe rollocking and his dad was informed. We eventually sent it for salvage. Last report from Scotland was that he was suing the seller, when the seller departed for places unknown.

Ed, as a Humanist and an Atheist I should be in the safest camp!

Nolan, I also had a similar sign on the front door of my former home. Here we live in a securely gated enclosure, so the religious enforcers cannot enter and no one can try to sell us anything. That didn’t stop the Mormons at the old Close though: they kept coming, after we kept telling them, it’s Sheltered Housing and you are supposed to contact the Association landlord for permission. Which they knew would not be given. Eventually we had a meeting and decided that we would call the police and state that we were all Seniors being harassed by these fanatics. Several of us did just that, never expecting actual results, but two cars and four officers came within 20 minutes. After speaking to some of us, they advised the morons Mormons that a Crime Number had been assigned and reported to the local station, then warned the Mormons that they would be arrested if they continued. One of them was up on his soapbox and quoting his right to free speech, at which the Sergeant in charge told him that, as seniors living in Sheltered Housing, we had a right to be left in peace. To calm the waters, I suggested that they could put literature through our letter boxes, providing the literature was recyclable. The Sgt. had to turn away for a grin at that one, but the morons were escorted away and we never saw them again. According to my former neighbour, no literature has ever been delivered.

I don’t see religious people as a problem: they can all believe what they like, I have Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Christian friends, including the lady who was the vicar of our former village church. I just do not wish them to force their beliefs down my throat: I see that as the cause of much of the ills of the world. I believe in the planet and am heartily sick of the way it is treated, especially by some who are supposedly religious.

The guy I know is not considering the place going TU Ed, he says they are starting to get their heads above water, mainly because customers are realising that their takeaways are better even though more expensive, than the competition. He has found a less expensive source of good wine and is offering that with his deliveries or takeaways.

This is how close the pub is to my “Default Location”, I look out of my window, lean out over the balcony and grieve. 😥

What a stinking pile of ordure these government messages are becoming. There is not one of this crew with an ounce of organisational sense.

Steve, I know how your situation must feel. Our usual pub/restaurant  is only 100 yards down the road, I can see it from the window of the apartment. We got to know the family quite well and I have spoken to the landlord since closure. He is in absolute despair, trying to make ends meet with takeaways but there is a heck of a lot of competition in Louth, it’s a “Foodie Town” and everyone is at it, from restaurants to chippies. Their Polish chef wants to go home and so do his waiting staff, but they are awaiting permission to travel. The meals there were fantastic, but how they will find another chef as good in a town and location full of places trying to re-hire, is another story.

Apologies for hijacking this Topic, Ryan!

I have read this link over a couple of days with interest, because I have been having similar problems. Some may recall that I was trying to set up my desktop PC in the spare room of our new pad, 3 rooms and 2 walls away. I wound up using two Netgear adapters and ethernet to the router (in the lounge) and the desktop here in the spare room. The Netgears were crap, but I found 2x TP Link PA-4020 adapters in my bits box, older but worked. OK so far…

Now I have occasional dropouts and the “Unidentified Network” message. Only happens very infrequently, but I am beginning to think my router is the problem, it’s the Plusnet Hub One and I understand it’s a ‘Technocolor’ model. When the ethernet drops out from the adapters, all 3 adapter lights are still green, but no ethernet and the Wireless signal is so poor that it just falls over, although phones and laptop in the lounge carry on at Warp 12.

Using my phone, I checked speeds over 3 days with the system working. In the lounge, 73 Mbps Down, 17 Mbps Up. Taking the phone into the spare room, speeds drop significantly, although I am in direct line through the walls to the router. That convinces me that I need a new router, what does the team think? This would be my choice:

                                        Any advice greatly appreciated guys!

I was browsing Ebuyer myself earlier and saw THIS – it seems to hit all of your wants ( not sure the CPU is fast enough for your games ) except for the big Enter key and rather OTT on the budget.

Too rich for my blood, but why only Win 10 Home at that price? Or does it not make a difference?

Got mine in for the 2 year Motability service last year, then they brought it back and gave it another early in February this year. I kept telling them it had been done. After they brought it back I found out they were still thinking it was the Tucson, which I had downsized to an iX20 just over a year into the lease. Since the original Service Manager left for another dealership, the place is disorganised. So I had 3 Major Services within just over 2 years.

The iX20 has only done a little over 16,000 miles, due to hospital stays and lockdown. MPG is the same, but Miles Per Year is very low. 🙂
