Still get logged in to your Work site Lee. Interesting, hope the changes come off! No worries, instead of using the FF bookmark, I just use the forum address in Google and get straight in. You look to have your hands full atm, so don’t worry about it, I can get in OK.

Les thanks for the link, passed on to my son. He loves old engines, old motors, says he is also quite fond of me because I am ancient! Cheeky bugga! He also used to come up to the garage with me when I was workshop foreman working mostly Classic cars, so he picked up some stuff then. For you and Richard I will report on his use of the tool: son will certainly give it some stick, he has a huge new Lister engine which can only go in his biggest shed. It has been stood in a Lincolnshire barn since the 1960’s and is from the 1940’s, a real heavy rebuild for him but he will get there and he will love doing it. That’s what he likes: takes old engines, rebuilds and shows them, he is in the perfect county as there are loads of Lister and Ruston engines in barns and workshops, old farmers etc pegging out and families wanting rid of what they cannot deal with. When he finishes each engine, it runs perfectly and looks like new. He has researched and sourced original parts, even original paint finishes. He is a perfectionist but the most untidy person I know, with the exception of his son, my No.2 gson. Don’t think I have seen him dressed in anything but jeans since his grandma’s funeral!

The workbench he mostly uses outside unless it is really raining: when I go to his place I always check round the backyard first if he is not out front working on his van. So buying an expensive one is really a waste of money, he really needs a less expensive one every couple of years. Richard, these tools are all quite noisy and the Sabrecut has a 400 watt motor, so I expect that to be noisy and vibrating, heavy gloves needed I think.

BL I have been told that most adapters are rubbish, but the tool I chose can take accessories from many other manufacturers, so all good there.

Thanks for the replies guys! I will let you know how it goes.

        Cheers, Bob.

          Politicians do detestable things.

They become detestable and are detested by the citizenry.

They develop an attitude that Millwall supporters will recognise: “No one likes us, we don’t care.”

And they don’t. Care, that is. About what they are supposed to care about.

My missus was referred to a private clinic by her GP, when the insultant consultant would not believe that the hip op he performed last year had gone TU. She was and is in great pain from this, usually worse after sitting down and I have to help her up. The clinic was a mainly Sports Injuries place and the physiotherapist took just two treatments to tell my wife that it was not a muscular, bone or ligament issue. I still wonder how it was that a letter from that Physio, worked to get my wife another appointment with a different consultant, when the GP could not make the original insultant see the truth, despite the GP’s letters.

Some Medicos are so determined about their own position, they will not contemplate anything else.

IMO British law and the justice system needs to be overhauled. We have centuries of laws which are no longer meaningful or relevant today. The flipside is that some lawmakers and lawgivers are making up the rules to suit their own or others’ purposes and interests.

I may have been a bit harsh in my comment Graham: after rereading it I realise that, did not mean to make it a criticism, sorry. Know you meant well.

I have been setting up both Sony Xperia L3’s and we are both very pleased with them so far. Great screen, like the fact that we did not have to open them up to put the SIM and SD cards in: they slide in from the side in a tiny, fragile holder. Tricky, with arthritic fingers! Got all the apps we need installed, Google stuff straight in. Only problem was caused by EE:

I set up mine first, because I wanted any mistakes restricted to mine and lessons learned from that would avoid criticism from SWMBO, if you understand my meaning. Contacted EE Chatline and the so-called ‘Tech’ bugga’d up the simplest procedure by locking my SIM, then would not give me a PUK code. Fine, I said, take me to your leader and I got a Head Tech with another strange name that I believe sounded Indonesian. He said it was a Security issue. Certainly is I said, can’t use the phone, nor can anyone else, that is about as secure as it gets! I threatened to take both myself and SWMBO out of EE (we are SIM only, no contracts) and cited the fact that (a) they had locked my phone (b) I had not been able to access the website for “MY EE” for two weeks and (c) there was no coverage here from EE.

I received a PUK code after they twice refused to recognise my Security questions. I think I shall be leaving soon anyway, what an incompetent bunch. Eventually they managed to grant access to my Login, after 3 times refusing my password, then allowing me in. With the same password.

Phones are great. Service Provider, not so great. Now I have to sell on a couple of Wileyfoxes, wish me luck!

Always good to hear of good CS Dan. Their prices are not as good as ebuyer for genuine XL cart’s for my TS 6150, though. I don’t buy compatibles, as I print photos and colour pages and found that the gen inks are best for that.

Truer than you know Dan, know it’s a joke but: if BoJo had simply told that lie in the House as part of a Parliamentary debate, and not splashed it all over the side of a bus, he would be exempt from judicial proceedings, whether private or official. The only time that MP’s can be even censured for behaviour in the House, is when they seriously insult, abuse or demean each other.

However, when they step outside of the Safety Zone that is the HofC, they are just as liable as any citizen. As for BoJo becoming PM, do we really need yet another Public School buffoon to lead us? If anyone thinks that TM has shown incompetence and intransigence in the job, well you ain’t seen nothing yet! He is currently courting the lowest common denominator by appealing to those who see him as entertaining. His entertainment value will be obscured by the reality of his performance if he gets the job and he will be revealed as what he really is: an incompetent clown with the political nous of a mediaeval Court Jester.

The truly awful mess he made when he was wrongly appointed as Foreign Secretary, should tell us all we need to know.

There is something to be said for going refurb. You can get a Samsung S7 A1 refurb for £150 or less if you dont mind a strange colour. You get Android Orio and full access to the play store with updates for at least the next 2 years. The S7 was built as a flagship and it shows in the quality of the camera and screen amongst other things. The only sticking point with a refurb could be the battery as its non replaceable.

I have 2 reservations regarding that Graham: I would be happy with, say, a refurb laptop from a reputable source, but why would I buy a used phone with a short guarantee*, when I can buy a brand new one that suits my needs, with a long guarantee? In addition, I wanted one that has a replaceable battery, like our old Wileyfox ones, batteries already replaced last year, inexpensively, from a Chinese source.

*Admittedly, the refurb may have more bells and whistles, but note the bit above that says ..suits my needs. The ones we are collecting later today, will do what we want from a phone. Better bang for bucks.

Bob, I am pretty sure you are right, whatever engine that heap had most of the horses were stuck in a waterlogged pasture or so it felt to me.

Of course there would be more to it than just the different engine Richard. Having reread your post about the experience, there must have been some severe mechanical/electrical issue: even the Dagenham 3 Litre engine was not that slow. I suspect poor (or no) maintenance. IIRC, that engine suffered from inattention to spark delivery -, coils, distributor rotor arms and HT leads being prime culprits. I recall repairing one in a Granada that had a cracked distributor cap. The 6 segments inside the cap were battered, as was the rotor arm. I have no idea how the car made it to our place, but it was there in our customer park when I opened up, note inside the windscreen from a regular customer – “HELP ME!” followed by “Start me up, find the problem, fix please.”

IMO the 2 Litre OHC Mk.1 Granadas were a much better car than the 3Litre engined ones. This thread is reviving some memories!?⚙?

We went down to talk to Carphone Warehouse about the Honor8A and were drawn aside for a confidential chat. It turns out that CW are instructing staff at all branches to inform potential purchasers of Huawei and Honor phones, that there will be no support after August 1st. They can still be bought and are still on display, but CW will offer no guarantee regarding support after that and purchasers are requested to accept that by signing the receipt. We thought about it and asked to see alternatives. I noticed this Sony Xperia L3:

                            http://tinyurl.com/y64uttqd

It was just another tenner at £149.99 and it suited all our requirements. After a long think over a coffee in a local cafe, we returned and ordered: they will be in store tomorrow. Then we got the usual BS concerning covers. We like wallet covers but their offer was £19.99 each or “3 for 2”, plastic cover wallets. OK, I said, what do we do with the 3rd, bearing in mind that we have only ordered 2 phones, not 3? Plus they only have it in black. So I rejected that and went home to check Amazon: 2 leather interior wallets in one of several colours. I ordered a red for me and a nice blue for SWMBO. £5.99 each.

                            http://tinyurl.com/y36v9fnz

Sorted! And the Xperia L3 is £169.95 at Argos, £169 at amazon.

You’re welcome Nolan. Hope it helped, it’s a contentious subject, not helped by some fake information on various websites.

Richard, the 3Litre Capri you mentioned was probably the British made one. Engine was a cast lump, almost twice as heavy as the German 3.1, which was derived from the 2.8Litre Cologne engine. Mated with a 5 speed box, that motor could be tuned to some really high BHP figures. Thanks to its much better power to weight ratio and much better suspension/steering, allied to bigger discs, it was an incredible performer. I took mine around the Nurburgring, thanks to an influential German best mate, and had an amazing drive. What an incredible motor that was, but you had to know how to handle a powerful RWD motor, as it is a totally different drive to a FWD performance car. Of all the cars I have ever owned, that is the one I would like to have back. Please!

Same Dagenham 3Litre lump was fitted to early Granadas: later ones had the 2.8 German engine, which made a big difference to Police cars. I had an ex-police 2.8 Granny for a while, went like ordure sliding from a garden implement but frightened my SWMBO when we first got together and was just too big. Sold it, bought a Marina….. Yes, I know, that did not last long!

That was my conclusion as well Steve. Plastic PoTUS is just playing games, trying to confuse the Chinese into making better trade deals. Probably confusing himself more.

I have never used Seafoam Nolan, but I do know from a bike mech mate of many years, that it was good for two stroke engines only. And then only for heavily carboned engines that had been stood for a long time. It should, according to my mate, be used in the first instance when the bike is initially being stored, then drained, without running, when it is going to be run again, filling with fresh oil, run engine for a few miles, change oil (and filter if applicable, or clean if not). See what this guy says about it:

This is what Amazon’s product description says:

                                  Product description
Sea Foam Motor Tune – Up. Works and performs instantly! 100% pure petroleum product for use in all gasoline and diesel engines, 2 and 4-cycle: Cleans dirty engine parts internally by removing harmful gums, varnish and carbon build-up; Removes moisture from oil crankcases and fuel tanks; Oxygen sensor safe; Stabilizes and conditions fuels to prevent becoming stale; Excellent for engine storage

In a 4-stroke engine, removing that varnish is what I was talking about. When it goes from the working surfaces, there is metal to metal wear, before oil can circulate around moving parts through the oilways. It isn’t noticeable for a while, but it does significantly reduce engine life. If it is an engine which is not expected to have much life left anyway, I would say use a Flush oil, but use one that is made for a 4-stroke engine. You have to remember also that removing carbon build up in an engine, then refilling with fresh oil and filter, can expose all those worn old seals that the krap was holding together. Then you get oil leaks.

All in all, you have to decide: is it a 4-stroke or a 2-stroke? Do you expect the bike to last you for at least a few more years, or just a year or two? If it’s a 2-stroke, go ahead. 4 stroke, no I wouldn’t unless it is not expected to last long anyway: get what miles you can from it.

                                  Hope that helps!

                                    http://tinyurl.com/y4ev9b5v

Looking at the bang-for-bucks, it has everything we need at the right price. And it has Android PIE (9), 1920 x 1080p, 32GB internal upgradeable up to 512 GB with SD card, 6.1″ screen. A penny under £140, having them at that. I am no smartphone expert, but to me that sounds OK for a Budget phone. Hopefully the Plastic PoTUS will stop his silly games soon.

Richard, more about corrosion and rust proofing.

Until my last Mk.1 GTXLR, I had owned several Ford Capri’s. The 1600 GTXLR I bought as a wreck, was a classic and a good one fetches serious money today, but I rebuilt to a very high standard then sold it because I could not refuse the money offered. This is the model I am talking about: unfortunately I have no pics of the one I owned, but this is in the same colour. Note the price – and this one is way off concourse!

That GTXLR was my penultimate Capri. My last one was a 1.6 GT in the same colour, bought on an impulse I came to regret. I always used to check the undersides and bodywork of cars I bought: the GTXLR I had spent time on, replacing and rebuilding with new metal, lots of welding. I used proper Ford panels and listed everything. I stripped the floorpan of all paint, mastic and rust proofing, down to bare metal, then the body shop lads bare-metalled the body and repainted in the correct yellow, the name of which is lost to me. The vinyl roof responded well to boot “Dubbing” which was used on the old leather football boots. It soaked in and came up a treat, better than shoe polish, which gives it a fake, shiny appearance.

Unfortunately I did not carry out the same work and attention to the GT, as I was by then beginning to rebuild my next project: a low mileage Sierra Ghia 2.3 Estate, which was in 3 pieces at the back of our compound and I needed a Ford bodyshell to build that. The GT had been treated with something called “Cadullac” which was supposed to be a very good anti-corrosion coating, On the ramp, it was black and quite thick, so after an inspection I had one of the lads MOT it and just used it. During the funeral of a much-loved Aunt, in heavy rain, my cousin in the back seat complained about wet feet. After getting it home, I discovered the floor was cracked straight across the factory “bungs” which were holes with rubber grommets inserted. Further inspection revealed that the cadullac was like concrete, inflexible and set: as it could not flex with the body and floor, it cracked and let in water, which clung to the floorpan and chassis. And rotted it. I was going to scrap it, until I received a bit of news from a previous owner. I knew of course that the 5-speed box was from an American ‘Plymouth Cricket’ version of our Capri, as I knew that the velour interior was from a Ghia of some sort. What I had not known, was that the engine and box had been blueprinted as Specials during the time he had spent a lot of money on it. So I broke it myself and advertised it as parts. To my delight, I made more out of the parts than I paid for the whole car! It finally went as a shell: no glass, doors, trim, interior, to a scrapyard mate.

I loved those old Capris, because I thoroughly understood the engines, boxes, steering, brakes and suspension. I knew how to apply the best ‘tweaks to make them go, handle and stop. Fastest one I ever had was a RS 3.1 in Germany.

JCD we holidayed in Malta a good few years ago, again before they joined the EU. I had previously only visited as a 16 & 17 yo junior deckhand, touring the Med in two trips unloading and taking on cargoes. On holiday I was amazed to see the same old buses still used on all routes, and just as you say all the old mostly Brit motors travelling about. Those buses were loved by their owners, who decorated them with some amazing stuff.

In 2011 the buses were retired and stored in a “graveyard”.   http://tinyurl.com/y48h8p38

I have not been back there since, but apparently Malta bus transport has entered the modern age, with Aviva running modern buses and modern services. Probably better for all sorts of reasons, but personally I regret the passing of those buses, which we used to travel all over the island. The owner/drivers were all characters, I loved talking to them. The old motors were a particular problem for my missus, as a lot of my work was rebuilding, repairing and maintaining Classics. Every time we passed a garage or a tiny back street ‘workshop’ I had to stop and talk. The word got around: seemed like every Malteser ? knew me and my job, within a couple of days! One day we visited Valletta and I had no change left for the bus fare, just a 50 Lire note. I went to a fruit and drink stall and asked for a bottle of juice, gave the guy the 50 note. He looked at me, grinned, and said “Come back tomorrow and I give you change, OK?” – keeping the note. “No,” I said, “Give me the juice and the 50Lire, I’ll come back tomorrow with the right money. That would be OK.” He laughed and gave me the change. I told him he had a British sense of humour and he answered “Why not? We were British for a long time.”

A Maltese comedian at a show we went to, had the name Danny de Vito: his real name. He said he spoke 3 languages: Maltish (!) English – and Rubbish! I had a great time there twice as a kid and a great holiday later with my SWMBO. Smashing people.

Agree with the electronics issues Steve: an experienced, qualified Auto-Electrician will be earning top money in the Trade, always been that way as far as I can remember. At my old workshop, we were fortunate to have the services of a really good one, who hated getting his hands oily on his own motors. We maintained all the oily bits on his cars and vans and he would react quickly to a call for help from us. Back in ’95 or thereabouts, even as a young guy in his late 20’s he had 5 employees and each had a small van. Last I heard, he had semi-retired but still doing a bit for friends. He trained sveral lads who turned out as good as he was. (Or were fired!)

Returning to the corrosion topic: when I first joined the trade, many customers would want an underbody oil spray, using old engine oil. At my first place of work, we kept one compressed air-line and a dedicated spray bottle for that. I don’t like to think what standing under a chassis and filling the air around me with carcinogenic old oil, was doing to me! Faint blue smoke as the car was driven away and the splashes were burning off the exhaust. What we did in our ignorance to ourselves and the environment in those days, does not bear thinking about.???
