I'm out.And who knows, once they have established a federal European state with a common army under German control, what’s to stop them reviving their expansionist tendency’s ?
Had to answer this Graham, I still visit here from time to time.
You have to have lived amongst the Germans in their own country for some time, and get to know them, in order to realise that the last 3 generations have no such tendencies. The guilt felt by the vast majority of today’s Germans about what their ancestors did in WWII, will prevent that. Have no fear of another Blitzkrieg, it simply will not happen. Worry more about the fact that the Germans are loath to upgrade the quality and quantity of their armed forces and equipment, and may make concessions to the Russians instead of increasing their defence spending. You also have to understand the collapsed state of Germany, indeed the whole of Western Europe, in 1945. All the cities and most of the towns had to be rebuilt and they began that work mostly with bare hands and back breaking labour. The result is a modern nation with modern buildings that put most of ours to shame. They know that they do not want that again.

I'm out.I was using 97 Pro myself until I changed to OpenOffice. I downloaded the compatibility pack when I originally installed OO, had no problems at all saving in either format. Sometimes there is a warning about saving in original format when converting a saved document, but I have always ignored that and never suffered any loss. I would think that Libre Office will have the same pack.

I'm out. Thanks Nolan, I have saved that to Pocket for a look after we return from holiday. I will also set it up on the Hudl (remember you sent, TY) Atm we are engaged in preparing for the trip on Thursday, so not much time. SWMBO is about 60% into Worry Mode about all factors connected with the holiday, will be 100% by Wednesday evening and causing me pain in the ears and brain. I would really like to upgrade both devices, but for now the Lenovo will be fine in Google Maps.

I'm out.I wish I had some of the above tactics and aids when I was printing. I ran Ms. Publisher 2000 and Office 97 Pro, made my own invoice/receipt templates, spreadsheets and used Sage Accounting for 12 months as the Disability college managed to swing me that free for a year. Then I setup my own books, using my own system.
Correction to my previous post, about the course: “Business Admin/Tax” should have read “Business Admin/Accounting”.
Interestingly, one of my last customers was a guy who began building, selling and repairing desktop systems, devices, printers etc. He had a good business until the ‘cowboys’ began advertising in local papers and everybody and his dog were selling PC’s. He saw the light and stuck to repairs only, which gave him lots of work repairing the cowboys’ mistakes. I was supplying his stationery and wondered why he didn’t print his own. “Don’t have time and am useless at design. You can spare me some working hours by printing it.”

I'm out. That is what concerned me too Richard. My Garmin Muovo 50 is probably older than Dwynne‘s, but does not completely reset after switch off. It restarts from the point in travel it was formerly at, then swiftly recalculates the route if the car has travelled some distance after restart.
On another (vaguely associated) subject: yesterday I began wondering if I could set my Lenovo 8″ Tab3 to act as a Satnav. Turns out that yes, I can. All I had to do was setup GPS by entering Settings – Location, tap On and set Mode to High accuracy. Then I could use Google Maps. Phone has Android 8.0.1 and Android Auto, but the tablet Android is only 6.0 and is not upgradeable, so cannot take A Auto. That is no disadvantage, as Google maps gives a spoken commentary along with clearer maps from the larger screen. The disadvantage is that my dash holder does pull out not wide enough to take the tablet. So it’s back to the drawing board!
The Lenovo would make a really good Satnav if I could only find some way to attach it securely where I can see it. It’s obviously heavier than the phone, so I now have to do some sideways thinking.
That may cause some pain.??

I'm out. It’s on a par with those ‘Fantastic new tiny device that can speed up your router and your PC’ ads that I killed on my phone.

I'm out.You’re welcome John.
Graham, that’s not just you, I should have known that too, used it before.

I'm out.All the advice given here is sound and should help, I have nothing to add except give none of what you produce away. I learned that hard lesson when I began a design and print business, after being retired on health grounds from a Disabled post. I was fortunate in that I started with a tidy sum as a payout and a little unfortunate in that it simply took off faster and financially better than expected, which drew me into false expectations. I was working harder and longer and had difficulty keeping pace. My tax affairs were not a problem, as before the previous employment I had completed a 13 month Business Admin/Tax course and I could keep my own books. I learned Sage Accounting and took IT courses at weekends in a Technical College. My previous employment was in Legal services at a county council, which proved to be a great help later.
I was supplying entertainers, businesses and independent schools among others with business stationery and books including prospectuses. It was a school that tripped me up: I foolishly gave away a sample and they copied it. It took me money I could not afford to take the school to court, but I won with costs and damages, after almost a year. Then another business tried to copy the business card samples I had supplied, which had been UV watermarked by me. That was another legal struggle.
Which is why I say, give nothing away. Everything you do, in preparation especially, has a cost to you. Factor in every expense possible, and append your name and copyright to everything you can.
But much good luck Ryan, I hope you prosper!

I'm out.John I had a look at your tablet ports and it’s mini USB 3, same as most phones are now. I have the mini USB 2 version of this flash drive:
Which ought to enable you to look for the drivers on your PC or laptop, then copy them via USB to your tablet. Unfortunately I also found this link, which has some advice you will not like concerning the effect of a recent Windows 10 update.
If it’s still under warranty, you might be able to return it for either refund or repair, but from the looks of my second link, the manufacturer does seem aware of the issue and is not helpful. If you bought it from Amazon or Ebay and it is still under warranty, I would advise requesting a refund. It looks like Win 10 updates break it. Sorry!
EDIT: Found the website and you can download the User Manual in PDF, which might help:

I'm out.Dwynne, after rereading your second post: what would worry me about your Garmin is this:
“ … it still shows up a ‘battery low’ indicator and then re-sets. When it re-sets the route is lost so you have to enter it again.”
I haven’t used my Garmin for a few months since setting up the phone as Satnav, but I could switch mine off and it restarts the route from switch off point. If I have travelled any distance from switching off, it recalculates the route. I think there is a problem with your Garmin that is more than just short battery life. Sorry!

Sounds exactly like my Aspergers grandson Nolan! He has what appears to be a tall, very thin, pale body but possesses good physical strength and stamina. On the face of it, a typical ‘IT nerd’ but he also speed-walks 2 miles to work and back every morning. He has Thyroid and Vitamin D issues, but even as a child he had strong arms and could run good distances. Whatever he decides to do, he follows through until he nails it, just as you describe. Problems are meat and drink to him, he fires up his intelligence and kills them, doesn’t matter how long it takes. That means missing hours of a day sometimes, he has to be reminded to eat and sleep. Every night at I give him 3 rings at midnight, if he doesn’t answer I hang up. If he answers I remind him to got to bed. His boss is in awe of him and has thanked me more than once for bringing him to the company 7 years ago.

I'm out.I would be more interested in discovering the nature of the advanced technology that the (mythical, allegiance undefined) deity was using to propel the rock(s)
Now that knowledge would be useful, if used for peaceful purposes…

I'm out.Thank you guys, much appreciated.
JCD, that’s interesting. I have reduced over the years from 5’7″ and am now 5’5″. That last was today and the previous was 5’4½”, which means either the previous measurement was inaccurate, or I have grown a half-inch. My Gert (4’9″) declares that she will soon have that ½” back, don’t really know what she means and too afraid to ask!
I was around 150 pounds when running, which for my height was judged excessive for one PTI, until he saw nothing but the rear of my vest on a cross-country run. I have always looked ‘fat’ to some, others who knew me had a different opinion. ‘Stocky’ is me! During Chemo last year I was almost down to that again, now I have put some back on due to my Gert’s cooking.
I don’t agitate over all my medical mishaps, no point. But I do try to keep my ‘engine’ working as well as possible, hence all the walks. I have been told that my heart and lung functions are fine and that is the key I think, keeps the good and healthy stuff circulating and helps with any issues. As long as they continue in that vein (pun intended) and all my marbles stay in the bag, I can keep on truckin’.
The scan today was face down, checking mainly the kidneys but also other bits. I fell asleep. My Gert’s words: “Only you could fall asleep during a CT scan!”

I'm out.Ed, thanks for that ONS link. An eye-opener, I checked many of the Trade statistics. Clearly, we have great discrepancies with many EU countries, with a few notable exceptions. Equally clearly, we need the US, Australia and NZ, and certain others. Sobering thoughts.

I'm out.I bought this last month: https://tinyurl.com/y35lcwd3
It charges my Xperia L3 phone from the car 12v ciggy lighter socket* via the USB 3 flexy cable connector, but can also charge a USB 2 device, either simultaneously or separately, via the 2.4A socket in the body. It is very small compared to most such chargers I have seen, but it certainly does the job: I have used my Xperia as a satnav with Android Auto, while charging my USB 2 Lenovo tablet, as a test. Due to the 2.4 A output, that takes longer, but the Xperia is charged faster than from a domestic socket. It is left plugged in when used as a Satnav. I have relegated my Garmin Muovo 50 to the back shelf of my parts store: I got much less than an hour from mine Dwynne. I will use the Xperia on Android Auto as my Satnav from now on. I found this to mount it, but not at Amazon:
It is the best in car phone mount I have ever used, sits in the centre of the dash top out of my road line of sight. I leave it there permanently and it has never moved, does not vibrate. Myself and front passenger can see it clearly and it sits directly over a Cig lighter port below the dash centre. The small plastic lever protruding from the lower front, is the lock/unlock lever. I bought it at TK-Max, on the Clearance shelf: £3.99! I often go there when in Grimsby, there some good bargains to be had.
I look on my Garmin now as a device overtaken by technology advances. The batteries are krap! I could use the Garmin with the car mount: it pulls out enough. But why bother?
*We ought to have another name for that, now that very few smoke. I know one nicotine addict who will not smoke in his own car, to prevent the smell putting off the next buyer. I won’t let him in my car or house, smoking or not. He stinks of it!

I'm out.+2. Around here he is viewed as Dr. Beeching MK.II, without the competence and dedication. A line that once ran from London to (eventually) Skegness, Louth, Grimsby and Cleethorpes, then over the Pennines to Manchester, would have been so useful now. With another line to Leeds from Cleethorpes, via Hull. If Beeching had possessed intelligent foresight, that would have reduced some of the HGV traffic. Not to mention the growing carnage in a county with very few dual carriageways.
The joke
played uponimposed upon the defunct East Lincolnshire Railway company, is that the old Station in Alford Lincs, is now a Jacksons Building centre and lies upon Beechings Way. The ELR line connected Boston, Louth and Grimsby and would have been a boon to freight and passenger traffic here today. The line was leased to, and became part of, the GNR, with connections all over the North and Midlands. Would that not be a large part of the “Northern Powerhouse” that certain politicians bleat about, were it still functioning today?. (Pauses to stick another pin in the Beeching figure)Couldn’t get the whole line in one image, but here it is:
Lots of villages on the line, I do not expect all those Halts could have been saved, but the main stations would have been of great use today: our public transport is dire*. Legbourne Road is just outside my village of Legbourne (on Station Road!) and has been a private house owned by the same family for many years. When I first came here in 2003, the gentleman who owned it used the station outbuildings as a museum, having bought much of the station equipment, signs and furniture when it closed. He eventually retired and closed the museum, but when he passed away his son remained and keeps the buildings as close as possible to the original, but did not reopen the museum, having been quoted silly money to insure it.
*No buses Sundays, none on Bank Holidays (in a tourist area!) and the former Lincoln-Grimsby-Mablethorpe-Skegness route ends at Mablethorpe. And ends at 1930 in the week anyway. We are isolated. (sticks another pin in the Martin Griffiths figure, CEO of Stagecoach)
